Won one, lost one was the return for the Ireland Under 21 sides who played French Regional oppostion in Templeville Road on Saturday, Ireland winning the first contest 26-16 and losing the second, 29-19.

In the opening match Richard Lane scored a try and Ireland were also awarded a penalty try while Barry Keeshan landed one conversion and three penalties. Ulster's Gareth Steenson kicked the other conversion and penalty.

In the second game, Ireland's scorers were John Harty (try), Tomas O'Leary (try), Andrew Finn (try), David Connellan (2 cons).

Lewis Stephenson has been called in as a replacement to the Ireland U21 squad to play against the French regional teams next Saturday.

The Ireland Under 21 selectors have named a 39 strong squad for the games against French Regional XVs at Templeville Road on Saturday next. The games will kick-off at 12 noon and 1.45pm respectively.

Perhaps not surprisingly, interprovincial champions Munster have the biggest representation with 14 named in the squad. They are followed by Leinster (12); Ulster (9): Exiles (3) and David Connellan the sole Connacht representative.

10 November 2003

John Anderson, who joined us from Malone in the summer, grabbed his chance with both hands on Saturday in Limerick. John played well in several Ulster League matches and for the 2s. On Saturday he was called up for his Div 1 debut against Shannon. A good start with passes finding hand augured well. Then, after 4 minutes, an interception. A long chase back and a great tackle. But John had badly dislocated his shoulder. Off to Limerick regional hospital, morphine and general anaesthetic and a long sleep on the way home. John is OK. His shoulderr is sore and he is receiving treatment. He's out for at least 6 - 8 weeks. Every one wishes John a quick recovery. Especially those who park close to where his girlfriend drives!

5th November 2003:

It is with great regret that Ulster Rugby today announces the premature retirement of prop forward Clem Boyd.

Clem has been diagnosed with a heart condition which, while not life-threatening, prohibits him from continuing his career as a professional rugby player

Whilst at university in Edinburgh where he completed a Mechanical Engineering degree, Clem played club rugby for Currie and captained the club in his final year at university. Rugby entered the professional era as Clem graduated and he moved to Bedford at the beginning of 1996-97 season. In 1999 Clem moved to Bath RFC on a two year contract but returned home after his first season when he won a place in the Ulster squad.

Ulster Rugby coach Alan Solomons commented; “It is sad for Clem that his career has ended prematurely. This year presented a great opportunity for him and it is a great shame that circumstances have denied him this chance. Clem has been an invaluable member of the Ulster squad and his presence will be sorely missed, however, I am sure that he will continue to make a valuable contribution to Ulster Rugby.

Capped 24 times for Ulster and a prominent member of Belfast Harlequins RFC, Clem has been a loyal servant to the game and Ulster Rugby . All the membership of Belfast Harlequins wish Clem well for the future and  thank him for all he he done for the club and look forward to seeing him back at Deramore in the very near future
