Quins 5 – Malone 22

On Thursday the 4th, I was awakened by our local corncrake croaking raucously.

Spring had arrived. Unfortunately for Quins, it was to be Malone, the better team on the day, who had a Spring in their step before, during and after this match. Indeed following a flattering (to Quins) 5-7 half-time lead to Malone, the latter were to win 5-22, one try to three tries.
At 18 Pentland converted Horner's try for Malone. From the restart McComb the Quins Captain, caught the ball on the full and scored in the LH corner at 19: game on: Q 5  M   7.

Olayisade replaced the injured BlakeKnox.
At 35 Barker scored a 2nd try for Malone in the LH corner: Q  5  M   12.
At 64 Pentland kicked a good penalty: Q  5  M   15.
At 78 Hill scored Malone's 3rd try from a ruck and Pentland converted:  Q  5  M   22.

In the 2nd half, Alan Rankin, Alatise Ale, Danny Annett and Robert Creighton
replaced Logan, Morton, Neill and Atkinson (with Olayisade going to flanker).

Quins suffered too many turnovers in scrum, ruck and maul though their lineout
was robust, if not perfect. Our attacking options were limited and as at Thomond we basically lost by two clear tries (3 to 1).

Quins started with:
15 Keith Pyper 14 Rory BlakeKnox 13 Michael Allen 12 William Stewart 11 Roger Kirkwood 10 Mark Kettyle 9 Michael Heaney 1 Tim Morton 2 Robert Logan 3 Richard Lutton 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb(C) 6 Stephen Neill 7 Colin Atkinson 8 Chris McCarey.

Thomond 23 - Quins 12
Fitzgerald Park, Limerick
Saturday 20th February 2010

The above match was played in rain, hailstones and sleet; I had to comb the  hailstones out of my hair before even the kick-off! Fortunately I had a geisha girl to hold an umbrella over me during play! Her name is Eithne.

Quins elected to defend the now removed burnt-out terrace-end and Thomond kicked off. So no spooks ( Harry, Adam, Ruth etc) were required, though I note that our International centre prefers Jack, as in '24'. Suffice it to say the half-time score was : Thomond 13  Quins  9,Thomond having kicked two penalties and, for Quins, Richard Reaney having kicked three.
The turning point in the first half, however, was a crooked throw in the line-out (not allowing for the left to right wind); the referee quite rightly played advantage and Thomond scored a well taken try goaled by their astute out-half.

In the 2nd half, Quins closed the gap to 13-12, Reaney having kicked his 4th penalty, early on, soon cancelled out by another Thomond penalty. However the 14 point turnover was to come at 53, when an almost certain try from Quins was denied by an intercepted try, in the  Thomond 22. This was goaled with the full 4 points going to Thomond,  the better team on the day.

Our 5 replacements: Alan Rankin, Tim Morton, Colin Atkinson, Michael Heaney and Rory Blake Knox were used in the 2nd half. Thomond were very adept at the driving maul and too many of our punts/grubber kicks resulted in dead balls, scrum back, or Thomond 22 drop-outs. There were a lot of knock-ons, but as I can verify ( see above) it was very cold. Our scrums were excellent, but we lost this game through two simple errors, on which Thomond capitalized: essentially two tries to nil.

I did think the Thomond forwards were off-side at the mauls and rucks from our line-outs, quite often, with impunity. We shall have to learn to be more street-wise!

In the circumstances, no Quins' player of the match, but I did think Miles O'Hagan tried very hard to make telling breaks, even after injuring his ankle.
 Quins started with:

1 Richard Lutton 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb(C)  6 Alister Heatlie 7 Andrew Joseph 8 Andrew Gillespie 9 Paul Marshall 10 Mark Kettyle 11 Roger Kirkwood 12 William Stewart 13 Michael Allen 14 Richard Reaney 15 Miles O'Hagan.

Finally on this away-Limerick venue occasion, I want to thank Mike Wallis for his sterling service, booking seats on the Enterprise for the supporters leaving Central Station. He has now gone to live in Scotland with his wife. Previously he lived in Coleraine and arrived by train at Central Station platform area. Our game v Bruff on 14 November was his last game: many thanks for all your work, Mike! and Good Fortune!

See you at Ballymena for the 1st round match v Ballymena in the Perrins Ulster Senior Cup, at 2-30pm,Saturday 27 February. With the England v Ireland KO at 4pm, this might alter: watch the website, please.

Keep at it men, coaches and management team: things can only get better.

Quins  22  DLSP 7

Philips Arena , Deramore Park

Saturday 30th January 2010

Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse and DLSP  kicked off, the flurry of snow having melted under the strong Sun. Suffice it to say, leading 17-0 at half-time, Quins won 4 valuable League points, with the final score Quins  22  DLSP  7.

Quins scored a penalty try at 15, converted by Richard Reaney who had already kicked a penalty at 10. At 24, Michael Allen intercepted and ran 50 metres to score a try converted by Reaney.

In the 2nd half William Stewart scored a well constructed third try at 64, which was  not converted. At 77 Ken Copeland scored a consolation try for DLSP, converted by Conor Hickey.

Try as they might, Quins could not score the vital fourth-bonus-point try. This may cost Quins 2nd place at the end of the season and hence promotion to Division 1B.
It is interesting that the two sides just above us in 2nd and 3rd places (Bective and Bruff)  play each other on the 27th March. Each side, Quins and DLSP, received a yellow card. Nevertheless after consultation I name Adam Macklin our man-of-the-match; not least for his scrummaging, several rumbustious breaks in attack and getting back to save a certain try, late in the game.

I thought Gareth Rourke and Chris McCarey were outstanding in the loose and in the  lineouts - where the lifters excelled themselves. A few bad passes and fumbles caused  the 4th try to elude us.. Uncontested scrums did not help our cause.
Alister Heatlie and Keith Pyper replaced Richard Lutton and Michael Allen in the 2nd half. Not used were Alan Rankin, Tim Morton and David Creighton.

Quins started with:

15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Richard Reaney 13 Michael Allen 12 William Stewart 11 Roger Kirkwood 10 Mark Kettyle 9 Paul Marshall 1 Richard Lutton 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb (c) 6 Colin Atkinson 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey.

 Quins 18  UCD 6
Philips Arena, Deramore Park
Saturday 23rd January 2010

In the above match,Quins elected to play against the Sun and mild breeze. UCD kicked off and were to take the lead  in the 1st half with their outhalf Niall Earls kicking a penalty(22) and a drop goal(26). Fortunately, Quins  took a half-time lead with an individual try (31) by Michael Allen, converted by Richard Reaney:  Quins  7  UCD  6.
Michael showed great pace and strength in holding off his opposite number.
At 51 Roger Kirkwood fairly sprinted up the left wing to score an unconverted try, after Neil McComb had picked up a loose ball and linked with Paul Marshall and Roger. At 68 and 75, Michael Heaney, having subbed on for Miles O'Hagan (with  Reaney going to fullback), kicked two important penalties, leaving the final score at: Quins  18  UCD  6, another 4 valuable League points!

In the 2nd half, Alister Heatlie, Niall Annett and Keith Pyper replaced respectively Andrew Joseph, Robert Logan and Roger Kirkwood, the 1st two having been injured. Once again the entire team played well, with Gareth Rourke, Colin Atkinson, Chris McCarey and Adam Macklin to the fore in rucks, lineouts, ball-carrying, tackling and scrums. However as the 2 tries were the essential difference, and having consulted Mr Len Young (team-manager) and Dr Bertie O'Neill ( photographer and trustee), I name the two try-scorers: Michael Allen and Roger Kirkwood as our men of the match, which in turn was well refereed by Cork referee Barrie O'Connell and his two Ulster assistants. Once again the Quins pack were the fitter of the two packs. Mr John Callaghan, Armagh, IRFU President graciously addressed the 400 Club at the pre-match lunch.
See you at the Philips Arena, Deramore Park, for a vital AIL II match versus DLSP, Saturday, 30th January, 2010, at 2-30pm, the latter still being 3 points ahead of us, in 2nd place!

Quins started with:
15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Richard Reaney 13 Michael Allen 12 William Stewart 11 Roger Kirkwood 10 Mark Kettyle 9 Paul Marshall 1 Richard Lutton 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb(C) 6 Colin Atkinson 7 Andrew Joseph 8 Chris McCarey. Alan Rankin was reserve prop, hooker and Doctor.

Old Wesley 11 Quins 36
Donnybrook, Dublin
Saturday 16th January 2010

In the above match,Quins were to earn their second 4-try bonus point win of the season:OW 11 Quins 36. OW elected to defend their Clubhouse and Quins kicked off. Tries by Logan(9), Reaney(11), O'Hagan(49), Marshall(73) and McComb (84) were more than enough to ensure a win. Other than the 3rd, Reaney kicked 4 conversions and a penalty(11).OW's #10 David Smith kicked 2 penalties @ 54 and 60; their open-side flanker #7 Ross Condron scored their only try. It should be mentioned that Reaney was out kicking after training on Thursday evening !
Although each side received a yellow card and there were a few cautions, I thought the Cork referee Mr Dave O'Flynn refereed this match very fairly, with the assistance of the two Leinster touch-judges. Quins are now in 6th place ,3 points behind 2nd placed DLSP, with of course Lansdowne well out of sight in 1st place. So all to play for in the race for promotion to Division 1B (top two).
All 5 replacements were used in the 2nd half: Alan Rankin, Mark McGrath, Alister Heatlie, William Stewart and Rory BlakeKnox for Morton, Macklin, Joseph, Pyper and Kirkwood respectively.
The all-round tackling was excellent and our front-five proved the fitter, in each half. Three tries from the backs and two from the forwards speaks  for  itself. Compared to the Bective game on the same pitch, earlier in the Season, we protected our early 10 points lead proficiently. Everyone played well, so no man-of-the-match (team manager's and my decision). Reaney did score 16 points but did miss what could have been a crucial tackle early on.  Atky covered some ground at 6 and was well backed up by Joseph. Allen did the same at 13. A few knocks-on occurred with the line at our mercy but this is history.
(Incidentally there was a clean sweep by the men's XVs (see main website screen): 1sts to 4ths !)

See you at Philips Arena, Deramore Park, this coming Saturday 23rd January 2010 for yet another exciting AIL II encounter, this time with UCD who caused us to be relegated from Division I 3 years ago. As the Schweppes ad on TV would say, our men were well up for the OW match !

Well done men,Wardy, Adam, DC and the rest of the management team.
Quins started with:
15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Richard Reaney 13 Michael Allen 12 Keith Pyper 11 Roger Kirkwood 10 Mark Kettyle 9 Paul Marshall 1 Tim Morton 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb (C) 6 Colin Atkinson 7 Andrew Joseph 8 Chris McCarey

Quins 9 – Terenure 17

Philips Arena, Deramore Park,
Saturday 12th December 2009

Quins elected to attack the Black Mountain on a cool, still afternoon. Terenure kicked  off. The Sun was to drop at half-time, when the home side was still very much in touch, 6-7, Michael Heaney having kicked two penalties at 12 and 41, and Mark O'Neill having converted Daragh O'Doherty's try at 15.

In the 2nd half, O’Neill and Heaney exchanged penalties at 52 and 65 respectively. The coup de grace came at 85 when Ian Denham scored a try, converted by O'Neill, to leave Quins without even a bonus point: Quins  9  Terenure  17.

Quins slip only one more place further down the AIL II table , to 10th. Tim Morton for Rankin and Keith Pyper for Allen were our replacements. Not used were Mark McGrath, David Creighton and Danny Annett. The squad was unchanged from last week's mighty effort at Lansdowne. The moral of the story appears to be :score tries, concede penalties, if necessary. I, along with many other spectators thought that Miles O'Hagan was badly treated. In the 1st half he was taken out in the air, deliberately, as he caught a high ball, yet the  opponent was not even cautioned! Miles was injured. In the 2nd half, O'Neill's successful penalty came from a Terenure punt with Miles standing his ground; the Terenure punter made contact with the stationary Miles who received a yellow card for alleged obstruction. No justice there,Mr Hodges.

It has to be said that our backline is not functioning as an entity and an attacking force. In my view our midfield triangle contains two wings and an outside centre.

See you at Stevenson's Park, Dungannon, for our Ulster League match, on MONDAY 28 December 2009, followed by Instonians at Philips Arena, Deramore Park, at 2-30 pm on SATURDAY 2nd January 2010 in the USL: Season's greetings!

Quins started with:

15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Roger Kirkwood 13 Michael Allen 12 William Stewart 11 Fiyin Olayisade 10 Rory Blake-Knox 9 Michael Heaney 1 Alan Rankin 2 Robert Logan(C) 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson 8 Chris McCarey.

Lansdowne 17 – Quins 16
Saturday 5th December
RDS , Dublin.

Lansdowne elected to defend Bewley's Hotel and Quins kicked off on a cool still a
fternoon . In the 2nd half, the breeze, with drizzle drove Quins on. Leaders Lansdowne were to squeeze their victory:  Lansdowne  17  Quins  16, 10-10 having been the half-time score, after a great Quins' recovery from a bad start. Thus Quins obtained a losers' bonus point which sees them slip into the lower half just of the AIL II table,

For Lansdowne, Matt Healy @ 3 and Brian O'Riordan @ 49 had tries, each converted by Dave Hewitt who also kicked a penalty goal @ 8. For Quins, Chris McCarey @ 26 scored a try, converted by Michael Heaney who also kicked three penalty goals @ 17, 65 and 76. Each side received a yellow card.

In the 2nd half, Tim Morton, for Rankin, and Keith Pyper, for Allen, were Quins' replacements. Not used were Mark McGrath, Danny Annett and David Creighton.

After consultation with Bertie O'Neill, we name Miles O'Hagan and Andrew Gillespie as joint men of the match. The latter prevented two tries in the 2nd half with crunching tackles one metre from our goal-line. The former had a terrific all-round game with immaculate catching (causing Lansdowne supporters to  shout 'run it', in frustration) and nearly got his winger in for what would have been an important try in the 1st half, after his long break. Macklin caught a Garryowen in the 2nd half, with half the Lansdowne team off-side, yet no penalty. One of our forwards was tackled, and was about to play the ball when a Lansdowne player 'duck-dived', landing like a parallel corpse on the Quins' side, yet the penalty went to  Lansdowne ! The IRB certainly does need to address this issue: in mathematics it is called non-Abelian algebra or non-commutative algebra#. Which comes first: holding on or 'duck-diving'?  Was our player supposed to plant the ball on top of the prone opponent? Surely not!

I must say I was very proud of our team and if they play as well as this for the rest of the season, the sky's the limit. They also played with great heart. A pity about some turnovers: once in a wheeled scrum and twice dropping out at restarts. But our  lineouts and our rucking were in general excellent. My opinion is that Michael Heaney and Roger Kirkwood played very well as did our entire pack.

Quins started with:

15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Fiyin Olayisade 13 Michael Allen 12 William Stewart 11 Roger Kirkwood 10 Rory BlakeKnox 9 Michael Heaney 8 Chris McCarey 7 Colin Atkinson 6 Andrew Gillespie 5 Neil McComb 4 Gareth Rourke 3 Adam Macklin 2 Robert Logan(C) 1 Alan Rankin.

Next week we entertain Terenure again in AIL II at Philips Arena, Deramore Park: be there!

Philips Belfast Harlequins 10
Bruff 14
Saturday 14th November 2009

Bruff elected to defend the Castlereagh Hills and Quins kicked off. On the previous day, the Friday, torrential rain had soaked the pitch, as well as flooding the exit on Deramore Park. There was a light intermittent breeze.
Quins scored a try at 3 minutes by Tim Morton, converted by Niall O'Connor who also kicked a penalty at 56. Bruff kicked 3 penalties at 43,44 and 60 and scored an unconverted try at 54 , all by their Captain and outhalf Brian Cahill. The half-time score was Quins 7  Bruff  3, and the final score was:  Quins 10 Bruff 14.
Quins' only consolation was a losers' bonus point; thus they slip only from 3rd to 5th in AIL II,sitting now on 15 League points, 2 points behind Thomond, DLSP and Bruff, 9 behind leaders Lansdowne.
Quins started and finished with 4 full Ulster players. Rob Creighton replaced Colin Atkinson who replaced Andrew Gillespie. Not used were Alan Rankin(16), Mark McGrath(17), Alister Heatlie(18) and David Creighton(20).
This was all very disappointing for Quins' team, coaches, management and supporters. There were too many turnovers, we were out-rucked and there were too many elementary handling errors. On the day, the better team won!
However, as James Bond would say: 'Never say Never'. We could always imagine a parallel universe in which the scores were reversed.
No match on 21st November! Our next match is agreed to be on Thursday 26th November at Deramore Park versus Banbridge in the Ulster Senior League (not Saturday 28th November, due to the Ireland v South Africa International at Croke  Park). Our next AIL II match is on December 5th versus leaders Lansdowne, in Dublin.
Quins started with:
15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Fiyin Olayisade 13 William Stewart 12 Colin Atkinson  11 Rory BlakeKnox 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 8 Chris McCarey 7 Andrew Gillespie 6 Tamaiti Horua 5 Neil McComb(C) 4 Gareth Rourke 3 Adam Macklin 2 Robert Logan 1 Tim Morton.

Philips Belfast Harlequins
v
Dolphin
All Ireland Cup round 3

Saturday 7th November
Philips Arena Deramore

Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse and Dolphin kicked off on a grey overcast but still afternoon, with only intermittent rain to contend with.
In the 1st half there wasn't much in it with if anything Quins having the
balance of play. However a missed tackle led to an unconverted Dolphin try by Robbie Allen at 29. At 38 Barry Keeshan extended the half-time lead to: Quins  0  Dolphin  8, with a simple penalty
In the 2nd half, Keeshan kicked another two penalties at 59 and 64, to extend the Dolphin lead to : Quins  0  Dolphin  14. Quins defence deteriorated and at 70 and 78 Dolphin scored tries by Niall O'Driscoll and Rory Keneally, respectively, each converted by Keeshan. Chris McCarey scored a consolation try at 81 (very deservingly in view of his outstanding game) converted by a drop kick  by Miles O'Hagan.
So the final score was: Quins  7  Dolphin  28,
which slightly flattered the streetwise Dolphin , but not by much.

In the 2nd half, Mark McGrath for Alatise Ale, Ale for Alan Rankin, Danny Annett for  Andrew Joseph for Andrew Gillespie and Frederick Cuttle for Richard Reaney were Quins' replacements, Paul Olding the sub hooker not being used.

It should be recalled that Quins were missing four Ulster A players who played Friday night in Muster v Munster A: namely Neil McComb, Adam Macklin, Tamaiti Horua and Niall O'Connor. I thought Chris McCarey was outstanding, with Miles O'Hagan, Gareth Rourke and Colin Atkinson not far behind. Dolphin in the 2nd half did receive one caution and one yellow card.

Quins started with: 1 Alatise Ale 2 Robert Logan(C) 3 Alan Rankin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Alister Heatlie 6 Andrew Gillspie 7 Colin Atkinson 8 Chris McCarey 9 David Creighton 10 Rory BlakeKnox 11 Richard Reaney 12 William Stewart 13 Rob Creighton 14 Roger Kirkwood 15 Miles O'Hagan.

See you at Philips Arena, Deramore Park, for another vital Division II League match versus Bruff  at 2-30pm.

Bective Rangers v Philips Belfast Harlequins

Donnybrook Arena , Dublin

Saturday 31st October 2009

Bective elected to defend the Old Wesley end and Quins kicked off.

There was to be no ECSTASY [ at the Fancy Dress Party at Quins on Halloween night, nor LSD; just cigarettes (for those who smoke) and ethanol ] . . . .. Quins had lost to Bective away : 24-23 in a cliff-hanger.
On a beautiful Indian Summer afternoon, Quins had taken an early 10-0 lead: a penalty by Niall O'Connor @ 3 and an O'Connor converted Miles O'Hagan try @ 8. However an over-elaborated back-row move off a scrum proved to be a turning point, as Dave Campbell the Bective scrumhalf and Captain made a telling tackle. At 17 and 24, Cormac O'Brien kicked two Bective penalties and at 29 right wing Mike Smith scored a well taken unconverted try in the right-hand corner; this followed a double-miss pass from the Bective outhalf O'Beirne to Smith.
So the half-time score was :  Bective  11  Quins 10.

All to play for! However it was not to be -  for Quins. At 44 O'Beirne kicked a penalty and when Michael Allen was red-carded at 48, he kicked another. (I thought myself that a yellow card would have more than sufficed : I don't think it was malicious -but we will leave that to the Reports Committee.)

At 62 O'Connor kicked a penalty:17-13 to Bective. However disaster struck and the Munster referee awarded a penalty try on a first collapse of a scrum on our line: was the Bective tight-head legally bound? O'Beirne converted and it was Bective 24 Quins 13 ! Miles O'Hagan then made a great break and was in but for a minor fumble. But at 69, O'Connor kicked a penalty and, on 81, Michael Heaney,  scored an opportunistic try, converted by that man O'Connor.
Final Score Bective 24 – Quins 23.

So Quins had to settle for a losers' bonus point but ironically move up from 4th to 3rd in AIL II table. It must also be related that the rain came down @ 50 and soon became an absolute downpour, with the spectators scampering about in the Donnybrook stand. Our line-outs and scrums were excellent and O'Connor's kicking was impeccable. However in the circumstances there was no man-of-the-match .

Hopefully selection and strategy/tactics will not be hampered by the all-too prevalent injuries list. See you at Philips Arena, Deramore Park, on Saturday 7th November for our 3rd round AIB Senior Cup match versus Dolphin from Division 1A.

Quins started with:

1 Alatise Ale 2 Robert Logan(C)3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Danny Annett 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Andrew Joseph 8 Chris McCarey 9 Michael Heaney 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Keith Pyper 12 William Stewart 13 Michael Allen 14 Rory BlakeKnox 15 Miles O'Hagan,

In the 2nd half, Colin Atkinson had subbed on for Michael Allen and Andrew Joseph; David Creighton subbed on for the injured Keith Pyper and Mark McGrath subbed on for Alatise Ale.

 Philips Belfast Harlequins v Greystones

Deramore Park
Saturday 24th October 2009

The above match was dominated by a strong Southerly wind. Quins won the toss and played towards Malone Rd.  Greystones kicked off towards the ClubHouse.
The Muster referee Trevor Collins, from Bandon, near Clonakilty, was particularly demanding regarding scrummaging.
Quins held a half-time lead of 5-0, following an excellent Rory Blake-Knox try  in the RH corner as a result of a Chris McCarey inspired passing movement.
In the 2nd half, after 2 minutes, Andrew Gillespie spun out of several would-be tackles and scored an important try at 42, converted by John Mills. Four minutesl later he kicked an excellent penalty, given the strong cross-wind. However at 68 and 78 we let Greystones back into the game with Barry Lynn kicking a penalty and Killane Keogh scoring a rather soft unconverted try. Thus Greystones gained a valuable losers' bonus point, with Quins having to be content with 4 League points, moving them up to 4th in AIL II, 2 try-bonus points behind leaders Lansdowne and behind Thomond and DLSP solely on points differential. The final score was thus: Quins  15  Greystones  8, so reversing last year's away defeat.
In the 1st half Alatise Ale subbed for the injured Tim Morton ; Robert Logan bravely stayed on despite a neck injury. In the 2nd half Alister Heatlie for Andrew Joseph, David Creighton for Michael Heaney and Richard Reaney for Rob Creighton subbed-on.
This match was a battle royal between 2 committed packs, in bad conditions.
The line-out jumping of the Captain Neil McComb, was decisive in setting updriving mauls and rucks and accordingly, Dr Albert O'Neill (photographer and trustee), Len Young (team manager) and I, name Neil McComb as man-of-the-match. Chris McCarey, Michael Heaney and Robert Logan were  significant back-ups.

Clonakilty v Philips Belfast Harlequins

Saturday 10th October 2009

Shannonvale,West Cork

Clonakilty elected to oppose the weak Westerly breeze. Quins kicked off. It was a very Sunny day compared to two years ago and in contrast with Friday.
I had to slow to 50mph on the M8 so heavy was the rain.
Quins won this match,deservedly so, by 5 Niall O'Connor penalties to 4 Clonakilty penalties:for Quins @ 32, 40, 49, 63 and 74;  for Clon @ 5, 17, 36 and 74.
Thus at half-time: Clon  9  Quins  6; @full-time: Clon  12 Quins  15.
At 88 a Clon player had to be stretchered off the field of play following a clash of heads. We hope and plead for a full recovery. Subsequently @ 92 , the Clon outhalf sliced a sitter which would have given Clon a share of the points.
However they had to settle for a losers' bonus point while Quins move up to 5th , one try bonus point behind Lansdowne and UCD, and and below 3rd & 4th on points differential: all to play for!
My man-of-the -match, without consultation, during 12 hours driving, is Niall O'Connor for his impeccable place kicking which won us this match, several from 50 metres! Shades of Shannon @ home!

Quins started with:
1 Alatise Ale 2 Robert Logan(C) 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Danny Annett 6 Andrew Joseph 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey 9 David Creighton 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Keith Pyper 12 Colin Atkinson 13 Richard Reaney 14 Fiyin Olayisade 15 Miles O'Hagan.
In the 2nd half Michael Heaney replaced David Creighton at Scrumhalf.
I thought the cover-tackling of the entire back-row was immaculate.
I thought our front-row dominated the scrums. The lineoute and rucks were
pretty even.Indeed regarding the well known current washing powder TV ad,based on Coronation Street (where-else than the seaside resort of Clonakilty),one could say we performed pretty well up-front and our hands were above average with a little room for improvement. Our  back-three:Miles,Fiyin and Keith each attacked well with sidestepping runs towards the Clubhouse in the 2nd half. My personal view is that Quins deserved to win because of more persistent
attacking than Clon, who nevertheless did take advantage of our errors.Well done men and coaches!
See you next week in Limerick for our 2nd round AIB Senior Cup match versus University of Limerick Bohemians!

Quins v Old Crescent

Quins elected to play into the firm Westerly wind and Old Crescent kicked off.
This was to be a fairly robust match well handled by Leinster referee Mr Brian MacNeice and his two Ulster touch-judges.
Quins scored 5 tries [Gillespie 14, Olayisade 18, Morton 26, Horua 46, Logan 80], O'Connor converting the 1st, 2nd and 5th.Woods for Old Crescent  kicked two 1st half penalties, reinforced by two unconverted tries at 55 and 77 by  Woods and Glamuzina respectively.
Thus the half-time score was Quins 19  Old Crescent  6; and the full-time score: Quins 31  Old Crescent  16, leaving Quins after the first round of AIL II 6th on 5 League points through points differential only, having earned the 4 (or more) -try bonus point.
After wide-spread consultation, I name Tim Morton as man-of-the-match for his effective and forceful play at loose-head.
When we are surrounded by world-wide misery: earthquakes, tsunami, global  warming,War (cf Afghan and Iraq), financial recession, swine(and goat?) flu, inappropriate expenses for politicians, and even David Letterman's local difficulties,  it is nice to play,or be associated with sports like rugby Union,
for relaxation, not to mention mental and physical fitness. And of course, if it is worth doing it is worth doing well. By the way I was in Rio de Janeiro on April Fool's Day in 2005 to secure an International Conference (cf 2016 Olympic Games and France Airbus fatal crash).
Michael Heaney, Ale Alatise and Keith Pyper replaced David Creighton, Tim Morton and Richard Reaney in the 2nd half.
Quins started with:
15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Fiyin Olayisade 13 Richard Reaney 12 Colin Atkinson 11 Rory BlakeKnox 10 Niall O'Connor 9 David Creighton 1 Tim Morton 2 Robert Logan(C) 3 Adam Macklin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Danny Annette 6 Tamaiti Horua 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey.

An excellent 1st half was, however, not matched by our 2nd half performance which was a little disappointing.Of course playing with the wind is not    advantageous in the lineouts nor in passing. It is nevertheless advantageous
for punting! Lastly,Olayisade's 1st half try was absolutely stunning, literally.
See you in Clonakilty next Saturday at 2-30pm for our Round 2 AIL II match:
October 10th.

 Season 2008/2009

 Saturday 18th April

Instonians 37
Quins 40

Quins, in the above final-round match, elected to attack the East and play into the mild breeze which soon dropped. Inst kicked off and, considering they were already relegated this was to be a tumultuous match, with Inst leading 22-9 at half-time. Fortunately, Quins were to win the 2nd half 31-15.
One is reminded of the movie  'A Beautiful Mind,' starring Russell Crowe as John Nash (Nobel Prize,Economics,1994). Only halfway through the film does one realize, at first viewing, that Nash's Harvard flatmate is a mere figment of his imagination, associated with schizophrenia.

Perhaps Andy Ward's half-time talk was the trigger for Quins' transition. Quins scores were:Tries (Blake Knox: 43, 54; Roache: 58; Kettyle:62; McCarey:80);
Penalties (Pyper:22, 36, 41); Conversions (Pyper:58, 62, 80), making a total of 40, while Inst also scored 5 tries at 24, 28, 31, 45 and 48 (with the middle-three
converted), while Watt kicked penalties at 8 and 72, to leave the final score at INST   37 ;  QUINS  40, and 2 League point to 5 League points, including Quins' first 4-try bonus of the AIL season.
Accordingly Quins made a quantum jump from 13th to 11th place and from 23 to 28 League points (6W, 1TB, 3 LB) (and -51 points differential), 9 points above relegation. Perhaps a quantum leap will be required next season.

In Animal Farm by George Orwell, read to me at the age of 9, I heard that: 'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others'. Our backs scored, admirably, the 1st, 2nd and 4th tries and the forwards the 3rd and 5th. After a brief chat with Len Young our team manager, at The Night at theRaces,we name Chris McCarey, once again, as man-of-the-match.
Quins subs were, Frederick Cuttle for McLoughlin , Stephen Robinson for Gillespie, and Alan Rankin for Logan, in the 2nd half. Not used were Ivan Girvan, and Andrew Joseph.
Had he lived, John Stewart Bell would undoubtedly have received the Nobel Prize for Physics for 'Bell's Inequalities' .He finished off all his quantum-logic proofs with QEDFAPP: quod erat demonstrandum, for all practical purposes. For the cognoscenti he came from the bottom of Tate's Avenue and initiallyattended the Junior Technical College in the basement of what is now BMC at the Black Man.

I commend Keith Pyper and David Creighton for practising their goal kicking
and punting respectively, on Thursday evening before team training, and in Pyper's case on Saturday morning. Following consultation with Miss Marple, Columbo, Taggart, Wycliffe, Taggart, Poirot and Morse, not necessarily in that order, Quins started with
15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Fiyin Olayisade 13 Mark Kettyle 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Dan Roache 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Chris McCarey 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie

In this my final report I would like to thank Alistair Latimer for his fine (now extinct Masonic School Dublin) oral contributions on the public-address system at our home games, and Jerome Holland and his wife Angela for their impeccable Presidential contributions to the Rugby side of the overall Club.

Finally congratulations to David  Gillespie on a successful completion of the season with our Firsts still in Division II of the AIL.

Quins 13
Dublin Universitry 34

In the above penultimate match of the season,Quins elected to defend the Lagan and DU kicked off. This was to be a very disappointing match from a Quins' supporters point of view.
For Quins, Andy McPhail (at 12) and Stephen Robinson (at 35) scored tries while DU scored three times at 20, 29 and 38.the first two having been converted, to leave the half-time score at Quins 10 DU 19.

In the second half, DU scored tries at 47 (converted) and 77. DU at 49 and Quins at 59 exchanged penalties to leave the final score as stated above.

Fred Cuttle and Niall Conlon subbed on for the injured Miles O'Hagan and Dan Roache. Unused were Alan Rankin, Jody Wylie and Rob Creighton. Each side received a yellow card.

As against Malone, kicking in general and defence remain inadequate and frail respectively. I thought our props Roache and Macklin did rightly as did our right wing Andy McPhail. McComb had a great attacking break at pace but lacked support.

Overall, very dissappointing - but despite this, a losing bonus point against Instonians will guarantee the retention of our AIL2 status. (regardless of other results) -  equally well , a 4 - try bonus performance would suffice!!

Quins started with:

15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Andy McPhail 13 William Stewart 12 Mark Kettyle 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Dan Roache 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Colin Atkinson(C) 7 Andrew Joseph 8 Stephen Robinson.

Malone 31 - Quins 15

Quins elected to defend the East in the above game and Malone kicked off with a stiff predominantly Western wind behind them, in our ante-penultimate AIL II match of the season. Malone secured 5 League points by scoring five tries at 4, 39, 41, 65 and 72 and converting the last three.

Quins' late response was two tries by Robert Logan at 45 and 82 interspersed by a Stuart Philpott try at 79.

Thus the half-time score was 10-0 to Malone and the final score 31-15 to Malone.

After only 9 minutes ,uncontested scrums ensued following injuries to Johnathon Hopgood and Adam Macklin, with Mark McGrath and Andrew Joseph subbing on. Moreover at 28,Malone 4 was red-carded having earlier been cautioned. Quins received three yellow cards in the first half .

Our punters, grubber kickers and goal-kickers still don't know a vector from a tensor. Our Midsomer-Murders tackling in the backs is worriesome and it has to be said Malone back moves showed much greater variation and penetration than Quins, as their 5 tries to 3 tries superiority confirms.

Our team manager Len Young and I both thought Robert Logan, Alister Heatlie and Willie Stewart did show excellent skill, determination and urgency. The usual suspects Colin Atkinson and Chris McCarey showed the required commitment in tackling throughout. Overall our pack more than matched Malone's.

Quins remain 11th on 23 points, above Clonakilty (12th on 23),DLSP (13th on 21),Thomond (14th on 18), Wanderers (15th on 17) and Inst (16th on 13).

The remaining fixtures for the bottom 6 teams are:
on the 11th April: Easter Saturday: Quins v DU (H), Clon v Bruff(A), DLSP v Wand(A),Thomond v UCC (A), Wand v DLSP (H) and Inst v B'hinch( A)
and
on the 18th April: Quins v Inst (A) ,Clon v B'hinch (H), DLSP v UCC(H), Thomond v Bective(H), Wand v Highfield( A) and Inst v Quins(H) - it is in the lap of the gods.

Not a good day at the Office! Good win, Malone!

Quins started with:

15 Keith Pyper 14 Miles O'Hagan 13 Shane Stewart 12 Mark Kettyle 11 William Stewart 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 8 Stephen Robinson 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 6 Chris McCarey 5 Neil McComb 4 Alister Heatlie 3 Adam Macklin 2 Robert Logan 1 Johnathon Hopgood. Stuart Philpott and Rory Blake Knox subbed on for Andrew Joseph and Miles O'Hagan in the 2nd half.

PS Einstein was of the opinion ''God doesn't play dice''. Of course he was wrong. The electrons in the atoms in the

molecules in gas, liquid and solid phases (that's you and me among other matter) are only describable by Scroedinger's equations of quantum mechanics which requires probabilistic distributions of electronic charge......

Quins should not play dice - on the other hand!

Quins 8 - Highfield 16

Highfield won the toss and elected to defend the Castlereagh Hills.

There is little to say about this match from a Quins' point of view.
We lost 8-16,so not even a quantum of solace;that is not even a losers' bonus point. At 36 Willie Stewart scored a great opportunistic try, following a charged down kick and just beating Mark Kettyle to the touchdown. At 46, Miles O'Hagan kicked an excellent goal ; Highfield kicked a penalty at 18, scored a goal at 68, a dropped goal at 87 and another penalty at, yes, 92 !! - such were the number of injury stoppages.
Thus half-time was 5-3 to Quins and full-time 8-16 to Highfield.
The most obvious reasons we lost were that 11 points were missed in the first half-hour:3 penalties and a conversion and yet another yellow card immediately
after a substitution.
We have now slipped to 11th position in AIL II, the only quantum of solace being
that we remain 9 points clear of relegation because Thomond lost and Inst. got
only a bonus v Malone.
C'est la vie!
Quins started with:
1 Dan Roache 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Adam Macklin 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Chris McCarey7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson 9 David Creighton 10 Mark Kettyle 11 William Stewart 12 Keith Pyper 13 Shane Stewart 14 Rory Blake Knox 15 Miles O'Hagan.
Substitutes: 16 Tom McArthur, who subbed for the injured Dan Roache in the 2nd half 17 Robert Logan, who likewise subbed for Stuart Philpott 18 Andrew  Joseph, who subbed for Stephen Robinson with Chris McCarey reverting to no. 8
19 Graham Jewhurst 20 Frederick Cuttle

DLSP v Quins

Kilternan Park, Co. Dublin

Saturday 21st February 2009

DLSP 9  Quins 24

The above match was like an episode of Waking the Dead, starring not Trevor Eve along with Grace, Frankie and Mel, but our entire team of 15 listed below. Because we are now 10 points only below the play-offs,with 4 matches to play all in Belfast. We are now 8th (top half) again.

But to the game: it was a good toss to win and we elected to play into the North breeze: it was to strengthen in the 2nd half, much to our advantage. The pitch was wide which suited our adventurous style of rugby, at times Wednesday XV mode. But 'packs win matches and backs lose them' is the old adage which as ever remains true. Accordingly and after some consultation in the Quins Extravaganza bar, my man-of-the-match is Dan Roache in his first full match at loose-head prop: for his scrummaging and loose play (rucks, mauls etc).
But actually, the entire pack were outstanding, after a few line-out turn-overs early on. It was good to have McComb and Joseph back fully recovered from injuries. Well done, Gary*.
It was a warm day, but quickly cooling as the 2nd half progressed.

The scores and scorers were:

DLSP: outhalf:1P @ 15;fullback:1P @ 21,1P @34.

Quins: Pyper:1P @ 19,Kettyle: 1 unconverted try @ 38, making the half-time score: DLSP 9 Quins 8.
In the 2nd half scores and scorers were, for Quins only: O'Hagan:1 P @ 46, Atkinson:1 unconverted try @ 56 Kettyle 1 dg @ 76, McLoughlin 1 unconverted try @ 82.

This gave us a comfortable victory of : DLSP 9 Quins 24, and 4 valuable points.

My own personal congratulations to Atky on his well-deserved selection for this Friday's Ireland Club International team. Also to our ladies 1st XV on their victory against Malahide last Sunday. And commiserations to our U18s who lost out in their final @ Omagh last week. But well done to our 2nds for their McCrea Cup victory.

Quins started with:

1 Dan Roache 2 Robert Logan 3 Adam Macklin 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Joseph 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson 9 Fred Cuttle 10 Mark Kettyle 11 William Stewart 12 Keith Pyper 13 Shane Stewart 14 Gavin McLoughlin 15 Miles O'Hagan.

The unused 5 subs were: 16 Mark McGrath 17 Tom McArthur 18 Michael Willis 19 Andrew McPhail 20 Roger Kirkwood.

Well done to our entire management team and Coach Bruce Cornelius.

Philips Belfast Harleqiuins
v
Clonakility
Saturday 14th March 2009
Deramore Park

In the above AIB AIL II match postponed from the abandoned match of 17th January 2009, Clonakilty elected to defend the Lagan and Quins kicked off. It was a cool, still St Valentine's Day.
We were to lose this game in time added-on for injuries. Not much love lost! Our hoarding boards, ripped apart on the 17th, had all been replaced. Chris McCarey was to be our outstanding player scoring an excellent try in each half :on 19 , after a superb chip by David Creighton into the Clubhouse corner, and in the 2nd half, on 48 after a 75 m sprint. Niall O'Connor converted both to give Quins a final total of 14 points scored.

At 39 on the stroke of halftime, Clon scored an unconverted try to the right of the posts. In time added on in the 2nd half, lock Mike O'Shea scored to the right of the posts, with David Lombard converting crucially to take the game by one point, having converted a penalty on 51.

So half-time was Quins 7 Clonakilty 5, and the final score was: Quins 14 Clonakilty 15.

This secured 4 League points for Clonakilty and a consolation losers' bonus point for Quins which leaves us still at 10th out of 16, 5 League points above relegation and level with Dublin University who are in 9th on points

difference. Two yellow cards for high tackles did not help our cause in the last 15 minutes. Nor did aimless kicking throughout the match, which merely gave Clonakilty free possession - which they exploited well and from which they out-rucked us,well and truly. Fair enough our tackling was excellent 95% of the time: it had to be! No doubt the better team on the day deserved to win.

In the 2nd half our hard-working coach Bruce Cornelius subbed Robert Logan on for Stuart Philpott, and Adam Macklin and Neil McComb ( returning after morethan two months off through injury), for Mark McGrath (with Dan Roache going to loosehead) and Michael Willis, respectively.

Undoubtedly Chris McCarey was man-of-the-match for his tries and superb tackling.

Quins started with:
15 Keith Pyper 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 William Stewart 12 Shane Stewart 11 Andrew McPhail 10 Niall O'Connor 9 David Creighton 1 Mark McGrath 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Dan Roache 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Michael Willis 6 Chris McCarey 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Subs not used were Miles O'Hagan and Fred Cuttle.

See you at Kilternan for our vital AIL II match versus De La Salle Palmerston, DLSP for short, next Saturday 21st at 2-30pm.(The English match is of course on the 28th February (misprinted as 23rd in the Programme/Fixtures book!).

Thomond
AIB AIL II
Philips Arena Deramore Park
2-30pm 31st January 2009

Quins won the toss and wisely elected to defend the non-trivial Easterly breeze
blowing from Siberia and the Lagan.Thomond kicked off.
In the first half, Quins scored a try and a penalty: Alister Heatlie (1T)16 mins:
see Dr AJ O'Neill's first photograph, Keith Pyper(1P) 27 mins.Thomond responded with a goal and a penalty: Kelly(1T) 36 mins and Cusack (1C) and a penalty (1P) on the stroke of half-time:42 mins:
Half-Time Score:Quins  8  Thomond  10.
In the 2nd half, all the scoring was by Quins: McLaughlin(1T) 52 mins, Macklin(1T) 68 mins (again see photos), the latter converted by Pyper(1C).
Final score:  Quins  20  Thomond  10.
Thus four vital points to Quins.Actually and interestingly enough (I attended the afternoon session) our warm-up started at 9-45am on the Friday morning in the Culloden (where else) with the players embracing psychological training by a very charming Cork lady called Frances.Organizers included our Chairman David Gillespie, Ann Harrington and Garry Watters of In Touch magazine.
Well done DC!
Subs were, in the 2nd half, Andrew Gillespie, Adam Macklin and Mark McGrath
for Stephen Robinson, Dan Roache and Johnathon Hopgood respectively.
Not used were Graham Jewhurst and David Creighton.
Quins are now up to 10th out of 16,on 18 points with a game in hand, leaving 1 Dublin game and 5 Belfast games, in AIL II.
Quins started with:
15 Keith Pyper 14 Gavin McLaughlin 13 Shane Stewart 12 William Stewart
11 Andrew McPhail 10 Mark Kettyle 9 Paul Marshall 1 Johnathon Hopgood
2 Robert Logan 3 Dan Roache 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Michael Willis 6 Chris McCarey 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson.
See you at Philips Arena, Deramore Park, Saturday 7th February in our 1st
round defence of the Senior Cup, against Malone.
As usual Atky tackled everything in sight and indeed the entire back-row made many metres. The three try-scorers took their chances ( better word is 'opportunities', Frances) well. Paul Marshall and Willie Stewart were effective.
Nevertheless, after consultation my m-o-m is Shane Stewart for his excellent
ball carrying and successful ruck-creation.
Of course still a few errors to brush up our psychological attention: reversed penalty in front of Thomond's posts, kicking the ball dead from 70 metres (scrum back),scrum wheeled twice through pi/2 radians (turnover) and goal kicking in general!
Also a word for our hard-working videographer Rodney Mairs while perching on
our highly exposed gantry: well done Rodney!
The Leinster referee was Alan Rogan, who refereed the game consistently.

Greystones
AIB AIL II 2-30pm, 24 January 2009
Dr Hickey Park

Quins came to Dr Hickey Park full of confidence. They won the toss and elected to attack the SW end. Greystones kicked off. There was a relatively weak NW breeze, despite the seaside location.
Indiscipline was to cost us this match with three penalties by Power conceded at 3, 8 and 21 minutes. Between the 2nd and 3rd, Quins scored a magnificent try from their own half, in a classical passing movement going right with Gavin McLoughlin touching down under the posts for Keith Pyper to convert: Half-time score: Greystones 9 Quins 7.

In the 2nd half, at 44 mins,an overthrow in the Quins lineout allowed the alert Andrew Gillespie to catch the ball and fairly sprint and crash over for a potentially match winning try: Greys 9 Quins 12. Unfortunately the conversion attempt was pushed outside the right-hand upright. We were in the lead for the 2nd and unfortunately last time:at 48 an unfortunate and unforced error allowed Breslin to score from a 5m scrum in Greys' right hand corner: Greys 14 Quins 12. At 78 Greys completed our rout, denying us even a bonus point, with a pushover try under the posts, converted by Power: Greystones 21 Belfast Harlequins 12, proving, if any proof were necessary, that attack is the best form of defence.

We have now slipped to 12th out of 16 in AIL II with 14 points, same as our next opponents at Philips Arena on Saturday 31st January 2009:Thomond.

Our rucking is too slow and our backline passing movements are too predictable and pedantic (apart from that 1st half try!): let us practise back movements with an actual backrow defence against us! As usual a number of players played with great heart and commitment but in the circumstances, no man of the match. Adam Macklin subbed on for the injured Johnathon Hopgood with Dan Roache going to loosehead. The other four subs not used were Tom McArthur, Stephen Robinson, Fred Cuttle and Andrew McPhail.

Quins started with:

15 Miles O'Hagan 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Shane Stewart 12 Keith Pyper 11 William Stewart 10 Mark Kettyle 9 David Creighton 1 Johnathon Hopgood 2 Robert Logan 3 Dan Roache 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Michael Willis 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson (c) 8 Chris McCarey.

Old Crescent v Philips Belfast Harlequins
AIL2, Rosbrien, Saturday 10th January 2009

Belfast Harlequins lost this game 17-29,it having been postponed from 13 December 2008 due to a water-logged pitch, for at least three reasons : A Non-availability due to injury or an assumed free date; B Turnovers in the scrum or due to dead punts; C We lost the toss and Old Crescent elected to defend the slope and strong Northerly windswept rain.

Quins kicked off and led 14-6 at half-time. This comprised 3 Niall O'Connor penalties at 11,15 and 26 interspersed by a magnificent Chris McCarey try, following an O'Connor NE to SW diagonal punt.
Mark Woods the Crescent outhalf slotted two penalties at 9 and 32.
In the 2nd half, Crescent kicked three more penalties at 44, 54 and 57,with the two winning goals (see B above) at 68 and 73.Our only reply was an O'Connor penalty at 47. We would have needed at least another converted try in the 1st half, to have had any chance of holding on in the 2nd.
Early in the 2nd half,Andrew Gillespie (for Andrew Joseph) and Adam Macklin (for Dan Roach) subbed on.
My man of the match was Chris McCarey.
Colin Atkinson and Niall O'Connor also played with conviction. Of the available squad (see A) only 60% can honestly say they can be satisfied with their performance.

We remain 9th in AIL II on 14 League Points( W 3, L 4, with 2 losers' bonus points) with 8 matches to go, 4 of them at home, starting with Clonakilty at home next Saturday the 17th January. We are 6 League points only above the relegation (to Division III) zone at the halfway stage.

For the second time in a month Quins were to concede four tries at home, Lansdowne's left wing Meheher:a penalty at 9, a goal at 20 and at 29 and a try at 78,with their pack scoring a pushover try at 66.
In the 2nd half Quins replied with three tries of their own: 2 tries by Andrew McPhail on his debut at 46 and 70 and one excellent individual try by Chris McCarey, under the posts at 82, the 2nd and 3rd being goaled by Keith Pyper.
Thus , the halftime score was 0-17 and the final result: Quins 19 Lansdowne 27. the latter securing a bonus-point win, leaving Quins empty- handed and remaining in 8th place, Greystones having lost heavily at 'Hinch, to drop below us on points differential and Old Crescent beating Instonians at Shaw's Bridge to leapfrog us by 3 League points. Old Crescent are our next opponents in Limerick next Saturday, 13th December, at 12 noon due to the Munster Heineken Cup match.
Nial O'Connor was withdrawn by Ulster on the Saturday morning and Neil McComb injured himself in training on Thursday evening. Dan Roach and Graham Jewhurst subbed on for Hopgood and Willis in the 2nd half. Subs not used were Robert Logan, Rory Blake Knox and Fred Cuttle.
There was no "man-of-the-match" in the circumstances though Atky did set a very high level of leadership. More heart-felt aggression is required from the start next
week at Rosbrien in all phases of play. Incidentally at one stage uncontested scrums were implemented, as both original Lansdowne props were yellow- carded , along with one of ours  ---- and indeed one of the two Ulster touch-judges implemented ELV1 in having the referee reverse a Quins penalty.

Quins started with:

1 Johnathon Hopgood 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Adam Macklin 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Michael Willis 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey 9 Paul Marshall 10 Miles O'Hagan
11 William Stewart 12 Keith Pyper

AIL II
The Mardyke, 2-30pm, 29 November 2008

Quins were fortunate to secure a losers' bonus point in a 7-0 game with UCC on Saturday, UCC missing 3 penalties and a drop goal in the 2nd half. Unfortunately Quins slip to 8th position in AIL II.
Three events conspired to create turning points:
(1) UCC won the toss and elected to defend a non-trivial diagonal breeze, which we never really mastered, unlike UCC in the 2nd half.
(2) Persistent use of ELV 1 by one of the two Munster touch- judges included a 10-minute visit to the sin-bin by one of our props.
(3) Halfway through the latter period in (2 ), a line-out was lost and from the resultant loose play, the UCC inside centre broke through a weak, high tackle and receiving a return inside pass from the left wing scored the game's only try in the left-hand corner. Their fullback converted from the 22m and 5m in from touch.
We might have won this match because apart from (3)) we did tackle very well against a young fit University side which however suffered quite a few injuries resulting in stoppages. Perhaps too many Quins' individual errors resulted in turnovers:crooked throws in the lineout (see (1)), too many dropped passes and even one or two scrums wheeled through pi/2 radians.
Stuart Philpott came on for the injured Robert Logan in the 1st half; Adam Macklin came on for 5 minutes for scrums in the 2nd half and Andrew Joseph came on for Andrew Gillespie at the end of event (2).
After consultation with Coach Bruce Cornelius and Team Manager Len Young, I name Mark Kettyle and Colin Atkinson as our men of the match. Both worked extremely hard and with effect. Other strong contenders were Chris McCarey, Alister Heatlie, Neil McComb, Shane Stewart and Willie Stewart.

Quins started with: 15 Mark Kettyle 14 Robert Creighton 13 Shane Stewart 12 Rory Blake Knox 11 William Stewart 10 Miles O'Hagan 9 Paul Marshall 1 Johnathon Hopgood 2 Robert Logan 3 Dan Roach 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey.
Replacements not used were Michael Willis and Fred Cuttle.

See you at Philips Arena,Deramore Park, next Saturday 6th December at 2-30pm for another vital AIL II match versus Lansdowne.

Philips Belfast Harlequins RFC v Wanderers FC

AIB AIL II Philips Arena,Deramore Park 2-30pm
                  25 October 2008

This vital match  was dominated by a strong transverse Southerly wind and continual down-pour.
We had been grateful in 2005 (AIL final v Shannon:L 20-25)for the pre-match use of Wanderers' famous Clubhouse in the Dart Station corner of the Lansdowne Stadium. Moreover famous Wanderers Internationals include JammieClinch(1923), Michael Gibson(1964) and Philip Matthews(1984).
Of course Gibson also played for another famous FootballClub:North of Ireland FC ,a foundation component of Belfast Harlequins RFC in 1999.
But to the match:Wanderers elected to defend the RiverLagan and Quins kicked off.
After 5 minutes,Wanderers outhalf kicked a penalty.
After 11 minutes Chris McCarey scored an excellent try (see  Dr AJ O'Neill's photo), converted by Keith Pyper:   Quins  7  Wanderers  3.
At 27 Pyper kicked a well-judged penalty(he had been judging the cross-wind at 12 noon during practice).
At 37,Willie Stewart scored a very good try in the left-hand corner, leaving the half-time score at:          Quins  15  Wanderers  3.
At the end of the 2nd half, each team received a yellow card, for killing the ball.
At 58 Wanderers were awarded a penalty try for obstruction the conversion this time being by their fullback:           Quins  15  Wanderers  10.
At 70,Paul Marshall scored  a brilliant individual try: having dummied his way left to right  with the wind, he cut back, chipped and easily won the race for the (unconverted) touchdown:
          Quins  20  Wanderers  10.
Wanderers had to score twice to win. They got only one so that Marshall's try proved the winner. Their second try came at 85 minutes on the final whistle,
after multiple phases of rucks and mauls. The conversion left the final score at:
          Quins  20  Wanderers  17:
4 points to Quins and a bonus point to Wanderers.
There is now a break in the AIL until 29 November.
See you next weekend for our 2nd round AIB Cup match versus Young Munster at Rosbrien,Limerick.
Well done, men:good scrums, lineouts, tackling, mauls and rucks; Each side was guilty of some virtually random punting, probably much to do with the weather.
In the 2nd half 4 of our 5 replacements subbed on:
Robert Logan,Adam Macklin,Erin Wagner and David Creighton,
only last week's try scoring flanker Michael Willis staying
on the bench.
Having consulted Len Young,Team Manager,I name Chris
McCarey man-of-the-match:very well deserved!
Quins started with:
15 Keith Pyper 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Shane Stewart
12 Rory Blake Knox 11 William Stewart 10 Miles O'Hagan
9 Paul Marshall 1 Johnathon Hopgood 2 Stuart  Philpott
3 Dan Roach 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb

Bruff RFC v Philips Belfast Harlequins RFC

18th October 2008,Kilballyowen Park,Bruff, AIB AIL II

There was to be no fleeing of the Earls(1607)(see mural on
Bruff village wall at turn for Bruff RFC),as Quins bagged all
four League points at Kilballyowen Park, with three minutes
of time-added-on remaining.

Michael Willis, subbing on at 62 minutes for the injured
Andrew Gillespie, scored a try on the right wing at 81 mins
following  speedy backing-up and Miles O'Hagan kicked the
difficult conversion,to overtake Bruff's two 1st half
penalties(at 14 and 24 minutes).Bruff,newly promoted to
Division II,for the first time, had been table-toppers on
the morning of the match. So the final score was:

           Bruff  6  Quins  7,

Bruff having hooked their last penalty attempt.

But to return to the beginning,Quins had elected to play up
the discernible slope, towards the scoreboard and Bruff had
kicked off, down the slope, right to left,as viewed from the
Clubhouse.
Bruff probably lost this game in the 1st half,in missing
two penalty shots at goal.
Other turning points came in the 2nd half:Neil McComb took
a quick throw-in on the halfway,to Colin Atkinson,which
showed great judgment,composure and importantly,a will-to-
win;also there arose uncontested scrums with two Quins
hookers(including sub Robert Logan)in the front row.
Lineouts(Chris McCarey,Neil McComb,Alister Heatlie and
Colin Atkinson jumping,Stuart Philpott throwing in,not to
mention the lifters)were excellent throughout.
Tackling was top class all-round.It had to be as Bruff,a
young vibrant and hospitable Club, were excellent maulers
and ruckers.
In the 1st half,Rory Blake Knox came on at inside centre
with William Stewart going to right wing and Paul McKenzie
going to fullback for the injured Mark Kettyle. This worked
very well.
For his winning conversion and for his fluent, confident
punting and passing I name Miles O'Hagan as man-of-the-
match.
This is not to overlook the efforts and perseverance of all
nineteen players(the other sub was Tom McArthur, with only
David Creighton missing out).
Quins are now 7th in the Division II table,in reality 5th
equal on 9 League points from three games, without reference
to points differential.Onward and upward.

See you at Philips Arena,Deramore Park,on Saturday 25th
October at 2-30pm for our home match versus Wanderers,4th

QUINS V Ballynahinch

AIL2

Philips Arena, Deramore Park

Saturday 11th October 2008

This is a transitional year for Quins Football Club in many ways. Above all, the game proved transitional at half-time when Quins had led (Keith Pyper's penalty after 5 minutes from halfway and a goal just before half time): Quins 10 Hinch 0,

Quins having kicked off towards the Clubhouse: Hinch’ choice. A pleasant day and a new stand-roof (well done Billy Smyth) had augured well. But it was not to be and Hinch turned the game completely round in the 2nd half to win: Quins 13 Hinch 16, following Rourke's try at 48 minutes, converted by Bambry - who reinforced the score with three penalties at 55,74 and 76 minutes; the only Quins' reply being a Keith Pyper penalty at 53 minutes.

So 4 League points to Hinch and a consoling losers' bonus point to Quins who are now 8th at best in the Division II table (one game on Sunday to be played)on 5 League points.

Not least since he tackled well and scored all his side's 13 points including a jinking try, I make Keith Pyper man of the match. The locks Alister Heatlie and Neil McComb were the pick of the pack, not least in the lineout, and were not far behind.
Michael Willis subbed on for Colin Atkinson three times (for blood) and in the 2nd half William Stewart came on for Gavin McLoughlin.

Arising out of Monday's teach-in, scrummaging and discipline should now come top of the agenda! Not to mention straight-out punts, from outside the 22m.

See you in Bruff (current table toppers on 9 League points) next Saturday, usual 2-30pm!

Quins started with: 15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Shane Stewart 12 Keith Pyper 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Miles O'Hagan 9 Paul Marshall 1 Johnathan Hopgood 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Dan Roach 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey.

PS On the Friday evening, 10 October, on the 2nd XV pitch, our 2nd XV had an excellent 20-19 victory over CIYMS I in a friendly. Tries were scored by Logan, McPhail and Wagner; an in-off conversion of the 1st by Blake Knox and a penalty by Torrens completed the scoring. Well done, men.

 Belfast Harlequins v Bective Rangers
AIB AIL II 4th October 2008 Philips Arena
           Deramore Park 2-30pm

Quins elected to defend the rain and west-to-east breeze
from the Malone Road end.Bective kicked off.
The half-time score was:
        Quins  0  Bective  3,
Connolly having kicked a penalty at 13 mins.
In the 2nd half,after 4,ie at 44,a Bective player received a
yellow card and Philpott scored a much needed try;Pyper
converted:
        Quins  7  Bective  3.
At 71 Kevin McKenzie scored an unconverted try in the right
hand corner:
        Quins  7  Bective  8.
There was a suggestion of a quick throw-in after a spectator had handled the ball.
At 74 Pyper kicked a penalty on the 22 in front of the posts,to secure a good opening win:
        Quins  10  Bective  8.
Six nail-biting minutes were added on during which Bective
were guilty of a crooked throw into the lineout.A let-off.
Rucks and mauls were exemplary especially in the 2nd half.
Tackling was excellent: it had to be.A few scrums wheeled
but  were countered by quick pick-ups at the base.A few
lineouts ended up in Bective's no.seven's hands, but this
was to be expected in the prevailing conditions.Actually
our handling was excellent considering the latter.I make
Paul Marshall man-of-the-match for his excellent passing
and good box-kicks and especially for his brilliant break
in the 2nd half, which very nearly led to the winning try.
Quins did miss a penalty at 15 but 4 points in the League
is a good start. Technically we are 6th in AIl II on points
differential,behind  Bruff,Highfield,Dublin University,
Malone and Ballynahinch.
Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Shane Stewart

Young Munster v Belfast Harlequins
Division II Play-off (2v3)

Tom Clifford Park
12 April 2008

Quins elected to play South against a stiff breeze and to the Clubhouse of Young Munster who kicked off. Let not my cold words accuse my zeal for our lambs were rendered silent in the 1st half, as Young Munster ran in fourtries at 22, 27, 35 and 40 by respectively Connolly, Corcoran, Carey and Murray, the latter converting the first three, having kicked two penalties at 4 and 13. Quins' sole response was a penalty by Slabbert at 30, so by halftime we were well slaughtered: Young Munster 32  Quins  3.
Clearly the 2nd quarter was our undoing and indeed the meagre return of 3 points after attacks by both our backs and our scrum, was disappointing.
In the 2nd half at 48, 57 and 80, three brilliant tries were run in from the halfway by McLoughlin, Heatlie and McComb. Slabbert converted Heatlie's and in true Leopardstown Seven-a-side fashion McComb drop-kicked his own conversion.
'However in the meantime at 64 and 69, YM had scored two unconverted tries by Corcoran and Connolly to leave thefinal score at: YM  42  Quins  22.
In the 2nd half and by arrangement with DC Gillespie, all five subs came on: Stephen Robinson for Johnston, Robert Logan for Philpott, Graham Jewhurst for Rourke, Andrew McKeen for Atky (with Atky going to the centre for Stewart)   and Freddie Cuttle for Creighton. We just did not have a sixth or seventh sub.
Paul Haycock (Leinster) refereed the game well. The loss of six normally 1st XV players through injury or other unavailability, proved insurmountable in our heaviest
defeat of the season, but losing by six tries to three was no disgrace - as I am sure the Chairman Ian McEvoy and our Acting Team Manager and Chairman of Selectors  Stephen Blake Knox would agree.
We must regroup for our final match of the season: the Ulster Senior Cup Final v Ballymena at a venue and on a date to bedetermined.
See you in due course.
Quins started with: 11 Willem Slabbert 15 Paul McKenzie 13 Thomas Horner

PS2 My man of the match was Gavin McLoughlin for that first absolutely outstanding try.

Belfast Harlequins 38
Barnhall 3
AIB AIL II, Deramore Park
 29th March 2008

Quins elected to attack the scoreboard.Barnhall kicked off. Between 1 and 2 pm, the strong gusting wind had rotated pi/2 radians from Easterly to Southerly (a prematch turnover). At 2 minutes Barnhall's Kavanagh kicked a penalty to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead. However at 21, McComb scored a good try converted by Cave to leave the halftime score at:  Quins  7  Barnhall  3.
At halftime Solly isued a number of instructions, the rain stopped and appropriately Quins ran in at pace five more tries at 46, 48, 53, 62 and 72 by respectively:
Stewart, Creighton, Gillespie, McKenzie and Atkinson, three ofwhich were converted by Cave (Slabbert not starting due to illness).

The final score was thus: Quins  38 Barnhall 3, which gave Quins 5 League points( for the 2nd time thisseason). Commiserations to Barnhall who had 3 big forwards off injured and are relegated to Division III with Suttonians.
Despite Quins finishing on 151 points differential, 8 ahead of Young Munster, the latter pipped us by one League point (52 to 51) for the 2nd promotion place. In the top-4 play-offs we are accordingly away in Rosbrien in one of the two semi finals. In turn Buccaneers (53)are promoted and at home to UCC(50) in the other semifinal, having scored 4 tries against Dublin University. In the 2nd half,Keith Pyper, Alister Heatlie, Robert Logan,Thomas Horner and Alan Rankin subbed on for Stewart, Rourke, Philpott, Cave and Voisey/Blake Knox (with Atky going to centre and Pyper to outhalf).
Ger English (Munster) refereed the game very well.
A J and J award for man-of-the-season went appropriately to Colin Atkinson, the team captain. Modesty forbids my reporting the surprising award of a 2nd magnum. Nevertheless many thanks to Judith and Norman. Later some attended the annual dinner dance at Best Western Wellington Park Hotel :many thanks to Emma Bester and Wes Kettyle for organising the event.
Commiserations to our entire management and playing teams, especially to our President Ronnie Gregg and his charming partner Hilary McLean whose work and commitment over two years were faultless.
It is not clear when the Senior Cup Semi final will be played :at any rate two Semi-finals to go!
C'est la vie :another season in Division II: it was a tight finish!

Belfast Harlequins 14
Suttonians 6

AIB AIL II,Deramore Park

22nd March 2008

Quins elected to attack Deramore Pk South with the Northerly wind blowing transversely across the pitch, right to left. Taipai had the visitors in front :Quins 0 Suttonians 3 with a simple penalty at 6. At 15 Heatlie scored an excellent try from a mauled lineout, with Slabbert converting: Quins 7 Suttonians 3. Suttonians had a heavy pack, including 2 tall locks, one at 6' 9''. They gained a number of turnovers , wheeling the scrum through pi/2 radians .No further score accrued before 1/2 time.
At 42 Slabbert scored a try coming off his wing to attack off a rucked ball and touching down to the left of the uprights at the Clubhouse end.He converted to make the score Quins 14 Suttonians 3.
The strong Sun and the now cold biting North-Westerly wind now favoured Quins (even my tracksuit and anorak were thwarted). For Suttonians Taipai kicked his 2nd penalty to leave the score at: Quins 14 Suttonians 6. With the last kick of the game, Suttonians hooked a penalty to the left of the left upright,as had Quins in the 1st half neither kicker allowing sufficiently for the strong cross wind or component thereof.
Quins had three yellow cards to Suttonians' one, all seemingly for forwards not releasing.
Final score, Quins 14 (Slabbert 1T, 2C; Heatlie 1T) - Suttonians 6

So four points to Quins and no consoling loser's bonus for Suttonians.
Further Quins' tries proved elusive. In the circumstances J and J decided they would postpone their award(s) to the Barnhall match next week. So see you at Deramore Park on the 29th March.

Young Munster are 1st on 48 ( 139), Buccaneers are 2nd on 48{ 120), Quins are 3rd on 46 ( 116) and UCC 4th on 46 ( 94). Respectively they play Old Crescent(A), Dublin University(H), Barnhall(H) and Thomond(A). (Barnhall are 16th and Old Crescent 14th   -  Suttonians 15th).

Rory Blake Knox subbed on for Pyper, Stuart Philpott for Logan and Alan Rankin (temporarily) for Voisey.

Belfast Harlequins 19
Malone 13
AIL2, Deramore Park
Saturday 1st March 2008

Quins elected to attack the Malone Road end and face the strongly gusting Westerly winds. Malone kicked off.
During the week a 5.2 earthquake (on the Richter scale) tremor was felt even in Co. Down, its epicentre having been in Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. It would appear that it persisted longer than originally thought! In this physical encounter, Quins' staying power and stamina eventually outswayed the heavy Malone pack, in the last quarter. The South Belfast pale-blue wheelie bins survived the storm while the red-sox of East Belfast found themselves thwarted. Both sides were to find the strong wind difficult to gauge with many kicks going straight out on the full. The halftime score was to be: Quins 3 Malone 6, a penalty by Slabbert at 6, doubled by Hallett at 28 and 40. Quins had played well against the wind and were happy enough.

In the 2nd half at 41,Pyper put up a high Garryowen and Stewart, following up at pace, tackled their fullback in
possession. Malone were penalised for not playing the ball and Slabbert duly converted: Quins 6 Malone 6.
At 54 Quins exerted Eton wall game pressure in the Clubhouse corner; following a tackle on a Malone defender in-goal and a series of phases of rucks and mauls, initiating from a Quins' 5m scrum, Atkinson scored an important try:
Quins 11 Malone 6.
The conversion was null and void, the ball having fallen off the tee in the strong wind.Game on!
At 58 it appeared that Malone's left wing Baird had scored a try, just to the right of the posts, following a Quins' knock-on and determined Malone running and passing. However following consultation with both touch judges, the
referee, David Keane(Leinster) awarded Malone a penalty try, presumably for obstruction. It was duly converted by Hallett: Quins 11 Malone 13.
Malone having introduced a number of subs, Quins brought on Stephen Robinson, Rory Blake Knox and Roger Kirkwood, for the last quarter, for Heatlie,Pyper and Creighton. This was to prove impacting and inspirational, as at 75, Quins regained  the lead with a try to the right of the posts at the Clubhouse end, by Slabbert who missed the conversion. This all came from a Malone scrum turned over: from the Quins' scrum Blake Knox chipped and followed up at pace, to win the loose ball and slip a delighful pass to Slabbert: Quins 16 Malone 13.
At 80, following a turnover through a great take in the lineout by McComb, and Malone infringing at the ensuing ruck, Slabbert kicked a penalty, 35 to 40 m out, to leave the final score: Quins 19 Malone 13.
Thus 4 League points to Quins who retain 2nd place on 42 League points, 2 behind the new leaders Buccaneers, and a loser's bonus point to Malone in 3rd place with 41 League points.
Malone and Quins are both at home on the 22nd March to Buccaneers and Suttonians respectively. The postponed match between UCC and Young Munster is scheduled for 16th.

The J&J man-of-the-match award went to Shane Stewart for his excellent and determined play on the day and over the last number of months.

Highfield 13

Belfast Harlequins  21

AIB AIL2

Woodleigh Park, Cork
Saturday 16th February 2008

Highfield elected to play down the top-class pitch, North to South. It was a cold but dry occasion. Proceedings were dominated by a persistently strong breeze, East to West, that is, transverse across the pitch from the Easterly Clubhouse.
Quins kicked off and the 1st half was to be nip & tuck. However at 30, Kettyle shrugged off a tackle and put McKenzie away for a superb try, McKenzie checking O'Brien their fullback by slowing, showing the ball inside to Kettyle and then fairly accelerating round and outside O'Brien. Slabbert converted.

So with O'Meara the Highfield scrum-half having kicked a penalty at 9 , the halftime score was: Highfield 3 Quins 7 - which was highly satisfactory, Quins having played up the slope in this first 40.
At halftime H'field went to the changing rooms and re-emerged to thunderous applause. H'field kicked off and a number of errors by cold Quins' players , at 42, resulted in a driving maul/ruck try for the home-team's no. 8 Bradley-Harris, converted by O'Meara: H'field 10 Quins 7.
The lead was extended by 3 with another O'Meara penalty at 51. However as the game wore on into the last quarter the Quins pack started to rumble, with quite a number of H'field's front 5 left prostrate on the ground.

Quins' backs were starting to take advantage of the down- hill in attack. One such passing movement going right through a number of hands, finished with Kettyle putting Philpott in, at 76, for a try with an inside pass at the right-hand corner flag. Slabbert converted: Highfield 13 Quins 14.

At 80, a driven rolling maul started on the H'field 22, put Gillespie in for a very good try, converted by Slabbert: Highfield 13 Quins 21.

So 4 League points to Quins and no consolation for H'field, who had topped the AIL II table earlier that day. H'field were magnanimous in defeat. Malone having beaten Barnhall handsomely with a bonus-point win, now top the table with 40 pts .Quins are 2nd with 38, H'field 3rd with 37 and Young Munster 4th on 37 points. . On 35 are UCC and Bucanerrs  places each in 5th & 6th , the last 3 having a game in hand.
So Malone at home on 1st March is something of a cup-final for us the prize being promotion, with Suttonians and Barnhall on the 22nd & 29th March at home.

During the week you may have noticed the harlequin beetle, a ladybird or as the French call it,une cochinelle, emerged appropriately as the ultimate forager, eating lesser beetles in its way. So one more forage,by the South Belfast pale-blue wheelie- bin cochinelles, against the Red-Sox (and their tie-ups)of Malone, and Harlequins will be in command.

Incidentally Rory Blake Knox and Stephen Robinson subbed on for Keith Pyper and Alister Heatlie, Quins having started as:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Keith Pyper 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.

The J & J man-of-the-match award went to Mark Kettyle for his contributions to the 1st 2 tries.

A number of our players did have problems with the cross wind, when it came to punting. Other players who impressed were Andy Ward, Colin Atkinson, Willem Slabbert, Shane Stewart and Neil McComb - but this was a team performance which reflected Thursday night's concentrated and productive team-training session. It was good to have Stuart Philpott and Paul McKenzie back from respectively marriage (congratulations) and Ulster A.

Also a special mention must go to Alan Solomons who, with Wardy and Maurice, has put a lot of effort into getting the team to its current progressive development. We have a bye in the Senior Cup and hence a week off (only for supporters!). Let's look forward to entertaining Malone in a fortnight's time.

PS One little philosophical reflection:it is probably better to concede a turnover rather than a penalty, as on Saturday!

AIB AIL II, Deramore Park
9 February 2008

DLSP elected to defend the Atlantic Ocean end. Quins kicked off into the diagonal Sunlight and a very light breeze. By 1/2-time Quins 9 DLSP 3 reflected the run of play Slabbert having kicked 3 penalties at 3,19 and 31 to one by DLSP at 7. However only 2 minutes into the 2nd half, a mis-hit fly-hack gifted a converted try to the opposition : Quins 9 DLSP 10.

Five minutes later, a turnover at a Quins' maul/ruck breakdown allowed DLSP to pass down the line for their right winger to cross in the corner and race round behind the posts for another easily converted try: Quins 9 DLSP 17.

However when the going gets tough the tough get going and a series of rucks and mauls had Conlon scoring a try at 57, converted by Slabbert: Quins 16 DLSP 17. During this period DLSP's tight-head was yellowcarded as had Quins' loosehead in the 1st half, Alan Rankin subbing on solidly for the scrummage requirement.

At 72 and 79 Slabbert secured the J and J man-of-the-match award ,for the second time this season, kicking two (winning) penalties:

Quins 22 DLSP 17. (Conlon(1 T) Slabbert(5P,1 C))

The AIL II table now reads:

1 Highfield 37 ( 76)
2 Malone 35 ( 60)
3 Quins 34 ( 96)
4 UCC 34 ( 64),
the points differential in brackets, being in our favour and Malone having picked up a bonus point v Dublin University (4 tries).Young Munster are 5th with 32, Bective 6th with 31,Buccaneers 7th with 30 and DLSP 8th with 28. - where the 4th, 5th, 7th,and 8th teams eachhave a game in hand..

A number of players had good games; our rucking and mauling was, in general, good as was our tackling. However two missed tries in the 1st half going left, due to indifferent handling and two conceded tries could have been costly.

In the 2nd half Keith Pyper subbed for Rory Blake Knox and Stuart Philpott for Logan,

Quins having started with:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Thomas Horner 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson.

Next week's match against Highfield will be a major and telling contest,as will Malone at home on 1st March.

All to play for: see you in Cork at Woodleigh Park, Model Farm Road on the 16th.

Thomond 16
Quins 18

AIL2, Liam Fitzgerald Park
Saturday 26th January 2008

Quins elected to defend East Limerick playing into a strong Westerly wind. The pitch was muddy but the rain kept away if not the seagulls. Thomond kicked off, but to the dead ball-line - scrum back. Unsurprisingly this was to be a ding-dong battle royal of multiple-phase ruck and maul, interspersed with strategic punting and chipping.
Thomond were 13-0 up at halftime (following the previous victory at home over Young Munster), and as a result of  penalties at 7 and 30 interspersed with a converted try at 17.
In the second half, after 45, the Thomond 6 was yellow-carded. At 49, Slabbert scored an excellent try: game on. At 62, Stewart scored a second excellent try under the posts, Slabbert converting.
At 65 Slabbert kicked the first of two well-struck penalties; at 67, Quins having failed to catch the restart,  the Thomond outhalf kicked a penalty for hands in the ruck: Thomond 16 Quins 15.
On 70, Thomond were penalised for barging in the lineout and Slabbert kicked the second of his two  penalties-  giving Quins a deserved winning lead of: Thomond  16  Quins  18, Thomond thus secured a loser's bonus point.
However four points were enough to keep Quins in 4th place, two points behind Highfield and Young Munster.
The J&J man-of-the-match selected by our President Ronnie Gregg went to Andrew Gillespie for his excellent pick,  go,  and ruck tactics without losing possession.
Quins did not use any of their five subs:16 Stephen Robinson 17 Stephen Beattie 18 Brian Howard 19 Roger Kirkwood 20 Thomas Horner,
having started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Darren Cave
12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
One or two players thought we were going to Leopardstown judging by their attire at training. A good team song rendition fairly echoed in  the Quins' changing room after the game. The discipline was exemplary as was the team performance. Rucking,  passing and kicking were sharper - in trying conditions. The odd scrum and the odd lineout were less than perfect but this was a great win, in the circumstances.
I particularly liked Creighton's precision and Voisey's continual backing-up. Well done team! See you on the 9th February at Deramore for the DLSP match:
all to play  for.

Bective Rangers 9
Quins 7
AIL2, Donnybrook
Saturday 19th January 2008

With Old Wesley Clubhouse at the South-East end and Bective Rangers at the North-West,Quins elected to attack Old Wesley, at Donnybrook. Bective kicked off with a strong Southerly wind and in rain which gained momentum as the game wore on.
Despite the wind, Quins had most of the play and territory in the 1st half, but had only one excellent try by McKenzie at 19, converted by Slabbert, to show for their efforts, so that the half-time score was: Bective 0 Quins 7. The penalty count was 5-1 in favour of Quins in the 1st half, including a couple that were kickable.
In the 2nd half it was 7 penalties to nil in favour of Bective, who in their three colours of green, red and white fairly ranged in three converted penalties, the last being 5 minutes into time added on, such were the number of stoppages.
All three were kicked from the same spot, near the Quins' 22, halfway out, to the left of the posts and straight into the wind at 58, 65 and 85.
Hence the final score was:           Bective  9  Quins  7.
The loser's bonus point leaves Quins in 4th place on 26 points, 6 behind UCC, 2 behind Highfield who beat UCC and 1 behind Young Munster (who play Thomond away on Sunday), and ahead of Malone on points differential, with Bective hot on both our tails on 25.
This must be classed as a missed opportunity, in that a bare win would have taken us into 2nd place, 3 points behind UCC. We must now win all of our last six games: 2 away, 4 at home.
There can be few complaints re our scrums and lineouts; however the unfavourable penalty count was mostly due to our indiscipline at the maul/ruck breakdown. Moreover, too many punts were charged down or misguided, and too many passes went astray.
No J & J man-of-the-match accrued, although I did think Kettyle's catching of the high ball was exemplary. Their 9 and 11 both countered well off our more speculative kicks. Each side received a yellow card.
In the 2nd half David Creighton and Stephen Robinson subbed on for Kirkwood and Heatlie respectively, Quins having started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Keith Pyper 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Subs not used were Alan Rankin, Robert Logan and Rory Blake Knox.
See you at Liam Fitzgerald Park , Limerick, next Saturday for the match against Thomond.

 Quins v Old Crescent

AIL2, Deramore

Saturday 12th January 2008

Old Crescent elected to attack the river Lagan.Quins kicked off.Conditions were well nigh perfect, the early morning frost having cleared.
The halftime score was Quins 20  Crescent  0, thanks to tries by Slabbert at 8 and McKenzie at 16, reinforced by two Slabbert penalties at 28 and 37 , the latter being a cannon off the upright (cf billiards).
Re Bertie's photo and comment, McKenzie literally picked the ball off his toes, mms above ground.
In the second half five tries were added by Philpott, McComb, Cave, Conlon and Rory Blake Knox (subbing on for Pyper) at 51,64,69,77 and 81.
Slabbert converted all 7 except Conlon's, making the final score:
Quins 53  Crescent  0, thus ensuring five points for a bonus-point victory, Quins
having scored three more tries than the necessary four.
Significantly we are back up to third position in the League Table, two League points behind second-placed Young Munster and with the best points differential :  ( 89) , in the entire table.
The J& J Man of The match award went to Neil McComb, for excellent lineout play, taking a number of opposition throws, his terrific backing-up for the fourth bonus-point securing try and his general endeavour. This was a consensual decision.
But essentially this was a magnificent enhanced team performance including great tackling all round.
See you in Donnybrook for the Bective game next Saturday.
Commiserations to Old Crescent who stayed in Best Western Wellington Park the night before and our thanks to John Carvill (Leinster referee).
Our good wishes to Gareth Rourke and Chris McCarey for speedy recoveries from their injuries.

Ballynahinch v Quins

AIB AIL League II

Ballymacaran Park

5 Jan '08

The above match had been postponed from 12th December '07, due to a waterlogged pitch.'Hinch elected to defend the Clubhouse and play into the moderate Southerly breeze and Sun.

Quins kicked off, in excellent conditions. By halftime, Quins led 9-0 thanks to consummate penalty-goal kicking by Slabbert at 9, 25 and 36. This two-score lead might have been reduced to one, had the Hinch fullback not hooked his kick from the Quins 22m straight in front of the posts, on the stroke of halftime: a let-off if ever there was one ! !

In the 2nd half Hinch renewed their multiple-phase maul/ruck game and scored a pushover try at 61, Quins having failed to clear their lines. Almost immediately Slabbert kicked his fourth penalty: Hinch 5 Quins 12.

It was not until Stewart scored an opportunist try at 73, that the match was won . David Creighton, who had subbed on for Kirkwood, had chipped into the right-hand corner. Stewart charged down the attempted clearance, and Cave following up at pace,  gathered, broke away, and put the supporting Stewart in for a try, with a delicate sleight of hand. : Hinch 5 Quins 17.

Other subs in the 2nd half were Alasdair Heatlie and Stuart Philpott for Johnston and Logan. The two other subs, Alan Rankin and Rory Blake Knox, were not used.

Having dug my car out of 9 inches (sorry, 23 cms approx.) of snow on Friday morning on my South Belfast driveway between 10-30am and 11am, it was amazing to find the Hinch snow-free on the Saturday. No Translink buses were operating in Belfast throughout Friday.

Many thanks to Hinch both for an excellent most welcome lunch and their hospitality in general. Thank you !

Quins now lie 5th again, one point behind DLSP and Malone, and ahead of Highfield and Buccaneers on points differential after seven complete rounds.

The J & J man of the match award went to Andy Ward for his excellent leadership and play against his old Club.

McComb, Stewart and Voisey were to the fore. Once again the entire- team's tackling was first class and welcome back to the team captain Atky, after injury.

Five home and three away games remain in AIL II for Quins  in 2008 - thanks to the redevelopment of  Lansdowne and Thomond Parks:---- Old Crescent (H; 12 Jan), Bective(A: 19 Jan),Thomond (A: 26 Jan), DLSP (H: 9 Feb), Highfield (A:16 Feb), Malone (H: 1 Mar), Suttonians (H: 22 Mar) and Barnhall (H:2 9 Mar), who lie, respectively, in 16th, 10th, 15th, 3rd, 6th, 4th, 13th and 9th positions in AIL II.

 Buccaneers RFC v Quins
AIL2, Dubarry Park, Athlone
15th December 2007

Quins elected to face the modest breeze and attack the Clubhouse end. Buccs kicked off.

After 5 mins Gaughan (R Wing) scored an unconverted try. Quins replied with penalties at 16 and 29. At 36 and after a driving maul Marshall scored an outstanding try on the right. Slabbert converted well.
So at half-time: Bucaneers 5 Quins 13.
From the kick-off for the 2nd half, McComb caught the ball on the full and drove deep into the Buccs 22. Slabbert kicked an important penalty, for the Buccs offside: 5-16. Buccs kicked a simple penalty at 61.Quins' fate (a loser's bonus point) was sealed by two late Buccs tries at 74 and 79: Bucanneers 18 Quins 16.

Our President Ronnie Gregg and photographer Bertie O'Neill agreed that no man of the match J&J award be made.

How did we manage to lose this vital match?

I can only suggest the long drive to Athlone, the lack of match practice the previous Saturday and injuries. Certainly

Conlon, Pyper and Slabbert had to be replaced by Stephen Beattie, Rory Blake Knox and David Creighton. Gareth Rourke and Robert Logan were not used. Scrums were good including two wheeled turnovers, lineouts (2,4,6) were good, rucks and mauls were good. In general tackling was good - though every time Buccs went left in attack in the 2nd half, they appeared to have an extra man and looked dangerous? Both late tries were scored in their L-hand (our R-hand) corner. Although Slabbert kicked 3 penalties and 1 conversion, in general kicking of all types was not good.

UCC appear impregnable at the top of the table but 2nd place may yet be interesting. Cave nearly got in at the end!

Quins started with: 15 Willem Slabbert 14 Chris Quinn 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Keith Pyper 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb

 Quins v Young Munster
AIL II,Deramore Park
1st December 2007

Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse end and Young Munster kicked off, with a strong Westerly wind - which was to veer North-West, and in the 2nd half South-West.
Willem Slabbert  (who won the J&J man-of-the-match Award), kicked four penalties - at 9,13, 37 and 79. Young Munster replied with two from Wells at 16 and 32 and two from Connolly at 43 and 62, so that the half-time score was 9-9 and the final score was  Quins  12  Young Munster  12.
This results in two League points each:Young Munster stay top on points differential over UCC, while Quins slip back to seventh.5 points back.
Quins started with:
15 Willem Slabbert 14 Chris Quinn 13 Darren Cave12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Aaron Deverall 9 Paul Marshall
1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey  4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Fairly late in the 2nd half, Stephen Robinson, Keith Pyper and David Creighton subbed on for Rourke,Deverall and Marshall.Other available subs were Alan Rankin (p) and Robert Logan (h).
On the Fiday night at 10pm Quins were informed by the Ulster Branch that they could not play Niall O'Connor - even though he had not even sat on the Ulster bench that evening, in the game versus Edinburgh.
Lineouts were good, especially in the poor conditions:Rourke at 2, McComb at 4 and Ward at 6 ( McCarey having been injured in the Dungannon game the previous week).
Tackling was good. Scrums , after a good start, became a little ragged. Both sides rucked and mauled effectively. Neither side looked like scoring a try.
For Quins, there was a lack of considered variation or coordinated strategy  in the link between pack and outfield.
Andy Ward accepted a further bottle of champagne on behalf of our hard-worked physio Gary O'Callaghan, such has beenthe number of recent injuries.
See you Ballymacarn Park, Ballynahinch, next Saturday in yet
another vital AIL II match.

Clonnakilty -v- Quins AIL 2
Shannonvale Cross
Saturday 17th  November 2007

Quins elected to defend the Irish Sea ( the East) and attack further -West Cork.  There  was incessant rain resulting in memorable down-town flooding, prohibiting pedestrians.

Clon kicked off with the strong Westerly wind which was to veer South-Westerly and by  the second  half , Southerly. (Quins were to benefit from only a transverse component which favoured kicking penalties across to the far left touchline)

Clon kicked off.Quins attacked from the off, but could not break down Clon's defence.
On 16 Lombard kicked a penalty. Worse was to follow when on 33 centre Dillon intercepted in his own half to score. His try was converted by Lombard.
Fortunately on the stroke of half-time (40), Ward scored a great rolling-maul try for Quins so that  the score  was Clon   10   Quins   5  at  half-time.

In the 2nd half and despite uncontested scrums ( previously dominated by Quins) and the unfortunate yellow-carding of Philpott by Leinster referee (Paul Haycock), Slabbert kicked a penalty at 57 and Stewart  got in for a rolling-maul try, converted by Slabbert, to leave the final score at :  Clon  10    Quins 15

Thus Quins claimed four valuable points to move into 4th position in AIL 2 league, with Clon securing a loser's bonus point.

In the 2nd half Andrew Gillespie temped for Atkinson ( blood injury) and then subbed for Conlon.
This was a very valuable win in atrocious conditions.
A special mention fro Maurice Field who "warmed" the team up and for our videographer Rodney Mairs who managed to keep his lenses dry.
Johnstons'  Man of the match went to Craig Voisey for his general robust , energetic and mobile tight-head play.
This was  a cross-gender decision by Ronnie Gregg ( President), Emma Bester ( nee Mairs:photographer) and myself.
Thirteen  points  from a maximun of twenty is 65%( IIi). A win against Young Munster at Deramore on the 1st December will merit the coveted  I ( 70% ), assuming 4 tries.

It must be said that our p's and c's were well justified this week: "patience, persistence and perseverance" up front in both attack and defence and " coherence, composure, cohesion and concentration" in the backs (apart from that unfortunate interept try )

See you in Dungannon next week for a vital Ulster League match.

Quins -v- UCC
AIL 2
Deramore Park
Saturday 10th  November 2007

UCC elected to attack the Malone Road;Quins kicked off, with a strong North-Westerly wind, in our first home game of the  AIL II season.
Horner kicked two penalties (3, 8)and Referee Mr Dermot Moloney  awarded Quins a penalty try (40), converted by Horner, one minute before the break.
Dunne had kicked a penalty (18) so the half-time score was Quins  13  UCC  3.

In the second half Quins did not trouble the scoreboard but UCC scored two rolling-maul tries ( 59, 84), both converted by Dunne who also had kicked a penalty (48). The winning goal  was the last event of a match, disappointing from a Quins' perspective.

The final score:Quins  13  UCC  20 did at least afford Quins a loser's' bonus point.
The consensus was that Quins did not deserve to win; equally they did not deserve to lose  -  13 points each might have been a more balanced result.
The penalty count was 12-8 in favour of UCC, whose pack showed more  patience and perseverance in the Eton wall game of multiple phases of rucks and mauls.
Our back-line, to a man, showed , in alphabetical order,  a lack of cohesion, composure and concentration.
In the second half Shane Stewart and David Johnston subbed on for Rea and Gillespie.
Willem Slabbert,Colin Atkinson and Graham Jewhurst were all missing due to injury.
For his excellent lineout jumping, Norman Johnston, Bertie O'Neill and I nominated Chris McCarey as the Quins Man of The Match, taking into account his consistent performance over the first three AIL matches.

AIL II , 3rd November,2007
College Park,Dublin.

Quins elected to defend the Physics Department and Samy Nasr Institute end.  (otherwise known to some as the Westland Row, Pearse Station end)

Dublin kicked off.

At 28, 63 and 78 Darren Cave completed his third hat-trick of the season and appropriately secured the Johnstons' man-of-the-match award, notably for his third try which secured the victory and denied Dublin a bonus point. All 3 involved good backing up of well constructed back moves, but the last involved the beating of two men on the outside and one on the inside:a bit like Diana Ross' famous song: "you turn me inside out, upside down.".
Dublin's left wing scored a good try at 21, while O'Connor (11) and Dublin's No. 10,Johnny Watt,( 31) exchanged successful penalties.  So that the halftime score was: Dublin  10  Quins  8, (Watt having converted Dublin's try).
Of course, Quins had played up-hill in the first half.
Apart from the Derrick Crane on Nassau Street, this was a picturesque setting on a beautiful late-Autumn afternoon. Marshall  had started off with an electric break up the right wing. McComb nearly got in at the left-hand corner.
It has to be said Dublin had a young strong pack which rucked well.
Only in the second half did we really get our driving maul going:very effective against tiring students.
In the second half Keith Pyper, Stuart Philpott and Andrew Gillespie subbed on for Stewart, Logan and Atkinson.
Moreover O'Connor converted our 2nd and 3rd tries.
Trevor Collins(Munster) refereed the match efficiently.
As is now expected,Ward and McCarey had skilful energetic games.
But this was a good team performance. We are now third in the Division II table after two away wins, closely behind Highfield and Young Munster.
Well done,men, team,coaches, managers,e tc.
Here Alan Solomons deserves a special mention.
So the final score was: Dublin  10  Quins  22.

 AIL 2007 - 2008

Week 1

Wanderers vs Belfast Harlequins

                 Wanderers v Quins
                All Ireland League II
                  27 October 2007
                   Merrion Road

Wanderers elected to play towards the black North, with the Sun and strong breeze behind them. Quins kicked off. Cave scored an early try (5) following the charging down of a Wanderers' punt. O'Connor converted. At 37 Fitzgerald atoned for two earlier misses and kicked a penalty, leaving the halftime score at
Wanderers  3  Quins 7.
At 55, O'Connor was unfortunate to be yellow carded for offside and Fitzgerald kicked his 2nd penalty, O'Connor having previously kicked a penalty for Quins at 42: Wanderers  6  Quins 10.
At 60 Slabbert hit a penalty from halfway: Wanderers  6  Quins 13.

THE turning point came eight minutes later (68) when, following a concerted Quins attack, Conlon scored a great try, shaking off two would-be tacklers with his powerful surge:   Wanderers  9  Quins  18,
Fitzgerald having landed his third penalty at 63. As is his right by law, Mr Peter Roche, the Munster referee, overruled the conversion of Conlon's try. Quins were, however, two scores ahead.
Wanderers throwing caution to the wind, attacked the Quins 22, far right, incessantly with a series of rucks and mauls (Eton wall game?), only for Quins to intercept and McKenzie sprint the length of the pitch to score under the posts,
O'Connor converting to leave the no-side victory at
                  Wanderers  9  Quins  25.
Regrettably there was no time to chase the fourth try and a bonus point. Still, four League points to none was an excellent outcome from our first outing in AIL II and an away one at that.
This was a very encouraging team/squad performance against last year's Division III Champions, a side which will trouble most other division 2 sides this season.
The entire back row of Atkinson, McCarey and Ward were outstanding in all phases of play. Slabbert's penalty and punting in general and Conlon's try were significant, as was Creighton's box kicking.
However our Honorary Secretary requires a man-of-the-match and following discussions with Norman Johnston (sic)and Bertie O'Neill, photographer and trustee, I nominate Paul McKenzie for his 80 minutes' contribution: first 40 mins
of tremendous defensive catching often at high pace and his punting and countering, under continual pressure from bombardment by Fitzgerald and Hunt, and then the sprint for the third and final try, over 80 metres.

Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Willem Slabbert 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Niall O'Connor 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott
3 Craig Voisey 4 Graham Jewhurst 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey
Andrew Gillespie subbed on for the injured Jewhurst late on. Other subs were Robert Logan, Conor Keown, Roger Kirkwood and Keith Pyper.

See you at College Park next Saturday for our second AIL II match, against Dublin University, better known as Trinity College Dublin.

Suffice it to say,  Shannon were very strong in the 1st half and built up a sixteen-point lead. A pushover try (at 9) was converted by Thompson, who added 3 penalties at 5, 13 and 20 mins. At 38 mins Slabbert kicked a penalty in reply to leave the halftime score at   Quins  3  Shannon  16.
Lack of composure in handling had denied us two try-scoring opportunities.
In the 2nd half Quins showed more determination and many Shannon players went down injured. For persistent infringement, Sean Cronin and Andrew Finn were yellow-carded.
Cave went round his man and came under the posts for his first try at 60. This was followed at 76 when Shannon dropped the ball in their own 22. Cave fly-hacked through and beat his opponent - diving on the ball under the posts. Slabbert converted both.
So, with just 3 minutes to play (plus time to be added on) we were ahead for the first and only occasion,  Quins  17  Shannon  16.
Unfortunately Quins did not deal with Shannon's restart kick. A ruck on Quins' 22 resulted in an offside decision and Thompson kicked the winning points:
Quins  17  Shannon  19   ----   C'est la vie!
I was impressed with Wardy's left-hand touch kicking in the
2nd half!

Derry in the Ulster League next Saturday at home, then Wanderers at Merrion Road, Dublin, in our first AIL II match of the season. Our performance to date augurs well. Just two minor suggestions  -  take and give earlier rather than
later (to negate the drift defence) ; grabbing and binding a partner at the back of the ruck before driving is less likely to lead to a penalty.
At the end of the day Shannon knew they had been in a tough hard match.

Quins started with:
15 Willem Slabbert 14 Mark Kettyle 13 Darren Cave12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Thomas Horner 9 Karl Trask 8 Chris McCarey(C) 7 Andrew Gillespie 6 Andrew Ward 5 Neil McComb 4 Graham Jewhurst 3 Chris Voisey 2 Stuart Philpott 1 Niall Conlon
Robert Logan, Stephen Robinson and Keith Pyper had subbed on for Philpott, Jewhurst and Horner, in the second half .

Our fist defeat:    -------  never mind:, promotion is more important!

Thomond
v
Quins

Round I AI Cup

Liam Fitzgerald Park, Limerick

6th October 2007

Thomond chose to defend the terraced row of houses at the Clubhouse end, playing East to West. Quins kicked off.

Quins scored five tries: Kettyle(10), McKenzie(41), Conlon(50) and Trask (62,73).Slabbert converted one and at 3 kicked an early penalty, while Horner converted two.

The halftime score was hence only: Quins 13 Thomond 0.

In the 2nd half Quins were more dominant and but for a strong Westerly Sun would have won more handsomely. Indeed had some sixteen points not been passed up the final score might have been 50-0. As it turned out the final score was Quins 34 Thomond 7,

The ^Thomond score came when their right wing chipped over the defence and won the chase to the line.

In the 2nd half Simon Rea, Stephen Robinson and Robert Logan subbed for McKenzie,Rourke and Philpott, Thomond using their full complement of subs.

At 65 a spell of fisticuffs resulted in the referee, Mr Dudley Phillips, yellow carding one from each side. At 72 a

red card was given to the Thomond 16.

Three of the tries came from Wardy winning a lineout. In the 1st ,Pypes cut, then rucked; Atky attacked hard and fast going right and Kettyle scored in the left corner. For the 2nd Trask broke from good lineout ball and terrific

interpassing between the back three resulted in McKenzie scoring in the right-hand corner.

For the 3rd Quins drove the maul and Thomond appeared to drop it. However from the Thomond scrum in front of their posts an intercept allowed Conlon to barge over to the right of the uprights.

The fourth try involved Stewart stepping inside and linking with Trask for the first of his brace of tries.

The final try, Trask's 2nd, was a simple attack going right in their 22 from a ruck.

I thought Thomond, like Rainey the week before, had a fairly heavy pack, while their back three were useful footballers.

This was a very solid Quins' performance who now look forward to the second-round home-tie against Shannon next Saturday 13th October.

It is worth mentioning that both Pypes and McComb each saved a try in the 1st half by excellent covering.

Since Dave McHugh, Assessor and ex-International referee asked me, I made the penalty count 10 to 5 in favour of Quins who started with:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Willem Slabbert 13 Shane Stewart 12 Keith Pyper 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Thomas Horner 9 Karl Trask 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Alasdair Heatlie.

UCD v Grafton Belfast Harlequins AIB/AIL I 21st April 2007
2-30pm Belfield Bowl

UCD elected to play right to left(from the stand/Students' Union);Quins kicked off.
In the first half UCD did most of the attacking as one would expect of a big fit University side. Quins' tackling however was absolutely outstanding and against the run of play, Cave nonchalantly kicked a penalty on the stroke of normal time -following  UCD hands in the ruck. That was 2 minutes from half-time though I counted 5 injury stoppages. Given that UCD had missed two penalties and a drop goal, this score was a little flattering. From scrum, lineout, maul and ruck generally either Marshall boxed or Kettyle found touch. Quins fielded two outside centres with Pyper on the bench following hamstring twinges.
Spare a thought for McKenzie who, for the second week running flew in from Gt Britain, having been on the Ulster bench, how's that for commitment.
At least thrice in the first half we won crucial turnovers at the ruck.
At 9 minutes our player-coach Wardy was down after a heavy knock: supporters were relieved when the physio helped him to his feet: halftime: UCD 0 Quins 3.
Ironically Quins came much more into the game in the second half, many of the UCD players having taken big hits.
Nevertheless at 4 and 36 minutes, McFadden made amends for his first-half lapses and kicked two penalties; each followed an attempted drop goal, no advantage accruing in the second case. Charged down kicks and mishandling by our inside backs were unfortunately our undoing and the original causes of these 6
points.

At 47 minutes no-side arrived: final score:
UCD 6 Quins 3.

On 25 League points we are relegated to Division II to join Ballynahinch and Malone. Dolphin and Ballymena survived on 26, with UCD on 27.
This is not the end of the world: as the April/May edition of Hooker reminds us, we did win Division II in season 2001/2. Moreover we did reach a League Final in 2004/5 and a Cup Final in 2006/7, in the latter of which O'Connor injured his left ac joint early on. It has ben a tremendous effort since the New Year by Solly,
Wardy and Maurice and the team/squad: from being on our knees we very nearly survived. In mathematics an improperly posed problem is one in which a small error in input data causes a large error in output data. Never mind: onwards and upwards!
Commiserations to Colin Atkinson our team captain; since his return following a very early-season shoulder injury, he has tackled like a demon. Pre-season injury to Andress and intra-season injury to Stevenson and McCarey also caused
disruption. It should be pointed out that even if we had taken the penalty kick at Lansdowne to secure 2 points for a draw we would still have been relegated on points differential. Solly is returning immediately to IRB business, I understand, we wish him all the very best and are very grateful for his turning the ship around since Christmas.
All the very best to the men for 4th May at Ravenhill for the Ulster Senior Cup Final and the possibly to be arranged Ulster League match, both against Dungannon.

AIB/AIC Final:
Dubarry Park, Athlone,
14 April 2007:
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Garryowen

Quins elected to play into the breeze, towards the Buccaneers Clubhouse. G'owen kicked off.

In the first half G'owen scored 2 relatively simple tries: Ciaran O'Boyle at 4 and McGovern at 9 minutes, each converted by Hickey: Quins 0 G'owen 14.
At 22 and 38 minutes Hickey kicked penalties:
Quins 0 G'owen 20: the halftime score.

In the second half, playing with the breeze, Quins upped the ante and at 69 minutes, Kettyle made a long break off a Pyper reverse pass, and put the fast-moving McKenzie under the posts. Pyper converted:
Quins 7 G'owen 20.
Unfortunately this was to be the final score, leaving G'owen Champions and AIB Cup winners with Hickey man of the match. Had the score been only 7-13 we might have won in the last 12 minutes, such was our dominance at that stage of the game. Never mind, bad luck men, and on to UCD on Saturday 21st April.
A few talking points: scrums were uncontested between 50 and 56 minutes due to a blood injury to the G'owen substitute tight-head. At 72 minutes it had looked from the stand that Lowe got downward pressure in goal after a chip ahead. It was not awarded. At 19 minutes Blake-Knox had substituted for the injured O'Connor. At 48 minutes Johnston and Rea substituted for Gillespie and McLoughlin. At 63 minutes, Sheehan and Cillian O'Boyle likewise for Mackey and O'Loughlin. Between 59 and 63 minutes Quins launched an incessant attack comprising 23 mauls and/or rucks. Six minutes before we scored our brilliant try.
In conclusion all the very best of fortune to our excellent team in next Saturday's must-win AIL on 21st April.
It would be remiss of me not to mention that both AIB Cup Finals made for a great occasion. It was a great honour for Belfast Harlequins Club. Well done to AIB and IRFU and to the better team on the day: Garryowen. However 7-20 was no disgrace and spare a thought for the injured water-carrier: Chris McCarey.

The teams were:
Quins:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Paul McKenzie 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie

Ballymena v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

AIB/AIL I at Eaton Park

Easter Saturday 7-4-7 at 3pm.

Quins elected to defend the Broughshane / Bouncy Castle end playing R to L, from the Stand, L to R from the Clubhouse. B'mena kicked off. (Note the palindromic date.)

The halftime score was: B'mena 9 Quins 7, Woods having kicked 3 penalties at 9, 15 and 45 minutes and
Philpott having scored a vital try at 36 minutes, converted by O'Connor. The heavy B'mena pack were quite dominant in this period, though significantly, Shaw was yellow-carded by Munster referee Peter Fitzgibbon (who had a very good game) at 35 minutes in the lead up to the Quins' try.

In the second half, as expected, Quins' superior fitness and mobility began to tell, though not before Maxwell dropped a goal after 5 minutes: B'mena 12 Quins 7.
After 20 minutes the referee spoke to both captains. From the following lineout, Quins attacked right then left, rucked under the B'mena posts, Pyper beat his man on the side-step and Marshall dived over under the posts, off a vicious side-step: a great try at 21 minutes converted by O’Connor: B'mena 12 Quins 14.
Quins had their noses in front for the first time and they were determined to keep their advantage. The pressure on
B'mena was beginning to tell and following a Wardy attack right; B'mena conceded a penalty on their 10-metre line at the ruck and to the right of the posts. O'Connor duly obliged with a magnificent penalty at 29 minutes:
B'mena 12 Quins 17.
At 37 and 38 minutes each of our halfbacks tried a drop-goal. At 43 minutes a punch-up occurred and the penalty was reversed, with Young being spoken to severely by the referee. (Not Mr Len Young my dapper friend who played in the Over-35's!) From the B'mena 10 metre line on the Bouncy side at 44minutes O'Connor punished B'mena with another magnificent penalty, to make the final score: B'mena 12 Quins 20.
No-side ensued at 45 minutes; Quins had their 4 League points.

This now leaves Buccaneers relegated, with Ballymena and  Dolphin on 25 League points, Quins on 24 and UCD on 23, all 4 fighting to avoid the other relegation spot.

The points differentials are:
B’mena (-26), Dolphin (-50), Quins (-77) and UCD (-96). Thus we need to beat UCD at Belfield on 21st April 2007, to be sure of retaining our Division I status. Provide UCD are denied a bonus point, actually a draw would suffice ( 2 points each); to be very academic, two bonus points would also suffice (1 for scoring 4 or more tries and 1 for losing by less than 8 points) since B'mena and Dolphin are unlikely to get much change away to Cork Con and Shannon, respectively (see Norman Johnston's trivial matrix:- now just a row or column vector), since both are chasing top-4 status.

In the meantime let us enjoy the AIB All-Ireland Cup Final against Garryowen at 4pm at Dubarry Park, Athlone, next Saturday 14th April. Let us wish our team manager Conor Keown good luck getting our squad to the venue.

And of course all the very best of good fortune to our squad of 22 players and their entire coaching and back-up team (especially our physio Gary!).

The teams were:
B'mena:
15 Chris Smith 14 Andy Maxwell 13 Peter Budina 12 Scott Young 11 Jamie McGruggan 10 Stuart Paul 9 Craig Woods1 Adrian Kirkpatrick 2 Michael Harshaw 3 Simon Shaw 4 Ian Caldwell 5 Andy Graham 6 Glen Moore 7 Neil McMillan 8 Chris Henry.

ALL IRELAND CUP
SEMI-FINAL

Grafton Belfast Harlequins
V
Shannon RFC
Deramore, 31st March 2007

It was a beautiful day at Deramore, the clocks having gone forward the previous Sunday. Shannon elected to attack the Clubhouse end facing a light breeze (which was to die down in the second half).
Quins kicked off. Within 2 minutes McKenzie made a great break and linked with Cave who, taking the tackle, dived over for a try. O'Connor converted:
Quins 7 Shannon 0.
Quins were pressing when Shannon intercepted and at 9 minutes McNamara scored under the posts-conversion by Thompson:
Quins 7 Shannon 7.
Two minutes later O'Connor kicked a penalty (for pulling down in the scrum):
At 24 minutes Thompson kicked a penalty, following advantage.
Quins 10 Shannon 10.
Following a hooked Quins penalty kick, Shannon dropped out at the 22-metre line. Ward caught, Quins mauled and rucked, Cave grubbered, Stevenson drove (sucking in the Shannon defence); the ball was spun right with a 3/4 man overlap and on 33 minutes McKenzie put Philpott in for a great try, converted by O'Connor:
Quins 17 Shannon 10.
An unfortunate Quins offside at the ruck allowed Shannon to find touch close to the Quins line. From the ensuing mauled lineout, McMahon score a try converted by Thompson:
Quins 17 Shannon 17.

This was the halftime score. Between 11 and 13 minutes into the second half, Quins won a lineout on the right and created a series of rucks from the last of which Marshall dived over: Quins 22 Shannon 17.
A minute later Thompson kicked a penalty:
Quins 22 Shannon 20.
On 23 minutes from a lineout and another series of rucks, Quins brought Kettyle into the line; he passed inside to McKenzie who side-stepped Lawlor magnificently to score under the posts; conversion by O'Connor:
Quins 29 Shannon 20.
However Quins then conceded a lineout 10 metres out and from the mauled lineout Hogan scored an unconverted try:
Quins 29 Shannon 25.
A Quin's offside at 35 minutes allowed Thompson to kick his third penalty:
Quins 29 Shannon 28.
On 39 minutes Shannon were penalised for dropping a Quins' maul and O'Connor as he had done in the AIL-I League game kicked an important penalty,
to make the final score:
Quins 32 Shannon 28.

A great performance by the entire team with each and every individual contributing superbly. Well done everyone! Our tackling of their ball carriers coming off long series of mauls and rucks won us this game in the last quarter. Shannon are always very competitive so to beat them for a second time in 2007 was no mean achievement. A truly memorable match very well refereed by Leinster referee Mr David Keane!

Teams:
Quins:15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward(C) 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Stephen Robinson
The 7 substitutes were 16 Alan Rankin 17 Ben Hanvey 18 David Johnston 19 Graham Jewhurst 20 Roger Kirkwood 21 Rory Blake-Knox 22 Simon Rea.

Shannon:
15 Mossy Lawlor 14 Mark Tuohy 13 Ross O'Loughin 12 John Clogan 11 Davis O'Donovan 10 Andrew Thompson 9 Frank McNamara 1 Conor Castigan 2 T-J Hickey 3 Kevin Griffin 4 Fergal Walsh 5 Padraic O'Brien 6 Garrett Noonan 7 Colm McMahon(C) 8 David Quinlan.
The 7 substitutes were :16 Les Hogan 17 Frank Roche 18 Pat O'Connor 19 Tadhg Bennett 20 Eoin Grace 21 Eamonn Lane 22 Phil O'Connor.

The matrix of fixtures rarely shortens! Only another 5 fixtures to go - honest!
Saturdays 7, 14, 21,28 April - B'mena, Garryowen, UCD, Dungannon, in the AILeague, All Ireland Cup Final, AILeague and the Ulster Senior Cup Final & USL, respectively. The first three are at 3pm, 4pm and 2-30pm and at B'mena, Dubarry Park (Athlone) and Belfield, Dublin, respectively.

And of course the First Trust Ulster Senior Cup Final at Ravenhill on 4th May, Friday evening at Ravenhill.

 AIL1
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Buccaneers RFC

Saturday 24th March 2007

 Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson (C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Buccs fielded:
15 Sean Carey 14 Alan Gaughan 13 Alex Hayman 12 Aidan Wynne 11 Tom Cregan 10 Gearoid O'Grady 9 Mark Bruce 1 Michael Diffley 2 Garreth Halligan 3 Killian O'Neill 4 Pat Cunningham 5 David McGowan 6 Colin Finnerty 7 Conor Hartigan (C) 8 David Kelly.

Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse end. A strong southerly sun was eventually to move South-Westerly in the second half. Buccs kicked off.
This was to prove to be a do-or-die cockerel fight with Mr Dermot Maloney penalising both sets of cockerels on numerous occasions. O'Connor kicked three penalties for Quins at 3,17 and 62 mins while Tom Cregan for Buccs kicked four at 52,58,66 and 73 mins.
It was therefore appropriate that the winning score was the only try of the match scored by Kettyle at 45 mins after
excellent attacking first right then left, involving the entire back-row:
Quins 14 Buccs 12.
Four vital points that lift us from sixteenth to fourteenth 2 League points ahead of Buccs and UCD who are both on 18, each having secured a bonus point for losing by less than 8 match points.
A few talking points: David Creighton substituted for Kirkwood at 43 mins, Philpott and Stevenson were both cautioned and O'Connor at 65 mins was yellow carded. Such was the red-Giant effect of the Sun that it appeared as if the card was red: fortunately not. I did think that their loose-head prop was refusing to take the scrummage pressure by standing up or collapsing and might have been penalised more often. Some of our box-kicks went out on the full, in both halves.
So with a cockerel fight now developing between the bottom 3 plus Dolphin and Ballymena, we must now prepare ourselves for away contests with Ballymena on Easter Saturday 7th (3pm KO: please note) and with UCD on the 21st (normal 2-30pm), both April.
In the meantime all the very best to Solly, Wardy, Atky, Maurice and the team/squad next Saturday in the AIB All-Ireland Cup semi-final against Shannon at 2-30pm 31st March at Grafton Arena, Deramore Park.
A season of oxymoron proportions, if ever there was one!

AIL 1
Lansdowne FC v Grafton Belfast Harlequins
Saturday 3rd March 2007

On a very fine Spring day, only to be broken by a second-half shower of rain, Quins elected to face the swirling wind and the Eastern Stand of the former International Stadium, equivalently playing east to west or from the Landowne Clubhouse, right to left. L'downe kicked off.
To cut a long story short, the first half finished: L'downe 0 Quins 0, and hopes were high among Quins' supporters, as Quins were turning round to play with the dreaded swirling wind.
Re the first half, Doran Jones and Conlon (Alan Rankin subbing on for 10 mins for Johnston) were yellow-carded at 18 mins and Ward at 22 mins.
In the second half the Senior Leinster touch-judge came on as referee, presumably following injury of the Munster referee Olan Trevor and after consultation with the fourth official Paul Clinch.
It has to be said also that the Lansdowne pitch was bare, much of it without grass. This made for difficulties, for both sides, with both footing and the bounce of the ball. After 3 mins of the 2nd half, Geraghty kicked a simple penalty for a Quins' offside:
L'downe 3 Quins 0.
At 7 mins Pyper scored a great try to the right of the posts following advantage from a L'downe dropped maul, 2 metres out from their goal-line. Crucially the conversion was missed:
L'downe 3 Quins 5.
There were a couple of Quins near-miss tries on either wing, denied only by a foot in touch.
On 30 mins, however, Gavin O'Meara, who had subbed on for Doran Jones, was mauled over for an unconverted try: L'downe 8 Quins 5 which was to prove to be the final score.
Between 32 and 37 mins Quins were awarded a penalty near the posts on the L'downe 5 metres line, following a great bout of handling in attack. Quins declined the simple (if anything was simple on such a day) penalty kick at goal ( which would perhaps have given us two points for a draw) in favour of an attacking scrum. L'downe collapsed it twice. At the third we were penalised for offside following a wheel and pick.
And so we had to settle for one bonus point for losing by less than eight points. Coleman's yellow-card on 44 mins was superfluous and no-side followed at 47 mins

Quins fielded
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 David Johnston 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Ward(VC)
L'downe fielded
15 Mana Ashford 14 Alan McCormack 13 Neil Walsh 12 Robbie Dolan 11 John Coleman 10 Andrew Geraghty 9 Derry Coughlan 1 John Lyne 2 Kevin Corrigan 3 Paul Doran Jones 4 Alan Maher 5 Devin Toner 6 David Lavin(C) 7 Vinny O'Dowd 8 Shane McCarthy.
.
In post-mortem terms, it has to be admitted that, for a variety of reasons ,we lost seven of our own lineouts: L'downe
had quite a big pack. It was our first defeat in seven outings. Also, our goal kicking recorded nil points, a mitigating circumstance being the difficult swirling wind.
And so to the theory of the off-diagonal matrix elements (no team plays itself).Put very simply, we must now beat
Buccaneers at home on the 24th March and UCD away on the 21st April. Ballymena away on Easter Saturday looks a strong possibility. Twenty-eight/nine points are our target.

Go for it Quins!

AIL 1
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v St Mary's RFC

Saturday 17th February 2007 at Grafton Arena, Deramore Park.

Mary's elected to defend the Clubhouse end, into a rather strong south-west Sun.Quins kicked off. After 2 mins O'Connor kicked a massive penalty from halfway to put Quins ahead 3-0 - a lead they were subsequently never to relinquish. At 39 mins the Quins' score was doubled by an easier O'Connor penalty to leave the halftime score at:
Quins 6 Mary's 0.
However it has to be said that this was despite Mary's having the bulk of possesson and territory. But Quins' tackling and general defending had been superb .It had to be!
Turning round to play into the Sun, Quins reversed the latter trend and attacked for most of the second half. On 18 mins Duggan was yellow-carded by referee Donal Courtney and O'Connor kicked his third penalty:
Quins 9 Mary's 0.
On 24 mins Mary's Sexton kicked a simple penalty, following a rare Mary's attack, to make it:
Quins 9 Mary's 3.
On 34 mins O'Connor kicked his fourth penalty:
Quins 12 Mary's 3.
Thus for the last 10 mins Mary's were in search of two scores. However on 41 mins Lowe scored an excellent try in the right-hand corner, from a blind-side break off a scrum.O'Connor hit a marvellous conversion from virtually the touchline to leave the final score at no-side:
Quins 19 Mary's 3,
This conversion gave O'Connor a total of 5 perfect place-kicks. Marshall had his best game to date (apart from one goal-line wobbler),with 90 minutes of concentration, box kicks and two magnificent long breaks.
As is now customary the pack were outstanding in scrum, maul, lineout, ruck and tackle. They had to be in order to overcome a determined Mary's side.

Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward(VC)7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey
Mary's fielded:
15 Robert Gannon 14 John McWeeney 13 Steven Grissing 12 Philip Brophy 11 Ronan Doherty 10 Jonathan Sexton
9 Matt D'Arcy 1 Matt Duggan 2 Richard Sweeney 3 Robert Sweeney 4 Gareth Logan (C) 5 Steve Bradshaw 6 Willie Duggan 7 Paul Nash 8 Hugh Hogan

Let's take one step at a time: next up on the AIB/AIL I trail is Lansdowne away on the 3rd March, in 2 weeks time.

 Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Galwegians

Quarter-Final AIB CUP
at Grafton Arena,Deramore Park,2-30pm 3rd February 2007.

On a beautiful wind-less day,Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse end. Wegians kicked off.

At 19 mins Blake-Knox kicked a penalty for offside. This was to prove to be the final difference. After a series of rucks,Quins' McCarey fairly raced in at 30 mins for an unconverted try. After an unfortunate misjudgment at 33 mins: Quins kicked a punt staight out to touch  from 1 metre outside the 22. From the ensuing 23 m lineout Wegians took a quick throw and Slemen scored a try converted by Wakely. On 40 mins Quins missed a penalty. The halftime score was:
                          Quins  8  Wegians  7.
Quins had had most of the 1st half's pressure and possession, so 11-0 would not have been out of place.Quins supporters were already a little anxious as Andress, Philpott and Atkinson, from the pack, and Cave and O'Connor, from the backs, were all missing, the latter two, due to Friday night's Ireland U20s match in Wales.
The 2nd half saw much pressure early on from Wegians with long sustained  series of rucks and mauls. However we somehow survived and Pyper subbed on for the injured Lowe, with Kettyle going to fullback and Pyper going to centre. The latter has a great ability to cross the advantage line and after a long series of Quins' mauls and rucks, Spiderman Ward fairly spun out of a tackle to score a great try, superbly converted by Pyper,at 18 mins:
                         Quins   15   Wegians  7.
At 23 mins,Slemen put in a fine cross-field punt which was caught on the full by Clearly who fell over the line  with a defender on his back, to make  it:
                         Quins    15   Wegians  12.
After 37 mins, referee Marshall Kilgore advanced a Quins penalty by 10 metres for talking.Kettyle found an excellent  touch  12 metres out from  the Wegians goal line on the stand side. Excellent mauling and rucking by Quins at 39 mins put  McCarey in for his 2nd try of the match.  Pyper again struck a superb conversion: With it well into injury time, the score was
                         Quins  22    Wegians  12.
Wegians needed two scores. They got one on the stroke of time(43 mins), after a great jinking run by Clearly who scored a converted try:
                         Quins   22 Wegians  19.

So three tries each but a very deserved, spirited and hard-earned Quins victory: the fourth on the trot! The semifinal beckons -  though not until 31st March, against Clonakilty, Garryowen or Shannon. We all have a Saturday off before a must-win game in the AIB/AIL I at home against St Mary's on 17th February.

Kirkwood, Kettyle, and Pyper, excelled in the backs. The entire pack excelled, but Rankin in his inaugural start at tight-head, and Rourke for his endeavour are  parteticularly worthy of mention. But the effort and determination of all 8 were crucial, to avenging our 29-8 mauling in Galway in October.Well done Solly, Wardy, Maurice, team!

AIL1

Blackrock College v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

Stradbrook Road, 27 January 2007.

Looking from the Clubhouse, the light wind was blowing transversely, right to left. Quins elected to play towards the Clubhouse and Rock kicked off. In addition to the usual representatives, Paul McKenzie, Paul Marshall and Stuart Philpott were with Ulster for the Ospreys game.
Rock have the best attacking record (in points) and the worst defence (in points) in the AIL I and so it proved!
In the 1st half Rock scored 3 tries (Morrissey, Byrnes and Pal'aoma at 2, 13, 42 mins respectively), Carr converting all three. Quins scored 4 tries (McCarey (2), Atkinson and Cave at 18, 30, 35 and 39 mins respectively), O'Connor converting all four, though missing 2 penalties in front of the posts.
This was a great comeback by Quins having been down 14-0!

Half-time score: Rock 21 Quins 28.

In the 2nd half, after 7 mins Pyper was unsurprisingly yellow-carded by referee Ger English for deliberately knocking on. Pypes was not totally to blame! Carr kicked the simple penalty. After 10 mins a missed one-on-one tackle gave Carr a goal for Rock. On 13 mins Ward secured the ball but Kettyle was spoken to by the referee. From the resulting 5m lineout, Woods touched down for an unconverted try. Suddenly we were 36-28 down, out of even
bonus-point territory. However Rock do concede many penalties for ruck and maul infringements and from one such hands-in-the-ruck and from the ensuing mauled Quins' lineout, Stevenson at 17 mins stormed over for an important try ,converted by O'Connor to put us one point behind:
Rock 36 Quins 35.
Rourke and Graham were then yellow-carded on the advice of a touch-judge; Pyper returned to action and Alan Rankin subbed on for Conlon. On 24 mins Rock were penalised for obstruction; from the ensuing mauled lineout Andress scored a great try to put us , significantly, in front for the last and enduring time:
Rock 36 Quins 40.
At 29 mins Rourke and Graham returned to action and Quins fairly drove a Rock mauled lineout back, thus securing a scrum put-in. To coin a phrase, Rock were rocking and were penalised at the scrum for O'Connor to nail an inaugural penalty, on the day.
Coming into injury time , Ward, from a driving run, scored an excellent try half way out on the right - only for the referee to disallow it for " a double movement". Strange !
Then in the last move of the game, Roger Kirkwood put in a delightful chip over the Blackrock line. Chris McCarey swooped under the Blackrock defender to touch down near the left hand corner. Amazingly, the ref, who could only have been mis-sighted, blew for full time , without seeking any dialogue with the touch-judge !
The final score:
Rock 36 Quins 43,
This result thus secured Quins 5 precious points (4 for a win and 1 for 4 tries, actually 6 tries) and Rock 2 bonus points(1 for losing by less than 8 points and 1 for 4 tries).
What a match!
We are still propping up Division I on 11 points, but with St Mary's and Buccaneers both at home and UCD away, we have 3 of the bottom 5 in our sights.
Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes(nothing to do with Phoenix Park), survival looks a whole lot more probable. We need to avoid missing one-on-one tackles and to make our goal and punt kicks more consistently secure, however. Our pack will not always have the strength, willpowerand determination to compensate.
I thought Stevenson was outstanding and extremely well supported by our entire back-row of Ward, McCarey and Atkinson, and at close quarters by Rourke and Andress. Hanvey threw into the lineouts well.
Of course Rock's attacking rucks and mauls were very good, but the Irish Times' Saturday prediction of a home win proved mistaken .So well done Quins!especially the 5 try-scorers ( a brace for McCarey).

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Shannon

20 January 2007
AIB/AIL League I
Grafton Arena Deramore

Shannon elected to play into the southwesterly strong diagonal wind. Quins kicked off towards the Clubhouse. Quins were missing  regulars McKenzie and Marshall who were with the Ulster side in Toulouse.

This was to be an amazing, exciting, unpredictable game, resulting in the defeat of the eight-times champions, Shannon. The excellent TV programme "Waking the Dead" pales into insignificance, by comparison. Three Decembers ago we had done the same (cf 19-18 in 2004 with 19-17 in 2007) but this time we doubled the margin and trebled our Season 2006/7 League points.

But to the events.

After 8 mins (the scoreboard clock was 2 mins fast) Shannon's flanker O'Connor scored a try, Bennett converting.
After 17 mins Pyper replied with a classic side step and change of direction and pace, with great determination. O'Connor converted and 5 mins later kicked his first penalty. After a series of rucks, Walsh scored an unconverted
try to leave the score: Quins 10 Shannon 12 at halftime - before which there had been 3 cautions (2 & 1 respectively) .I was impressed by a try-saving tackle by Kettyle and by Cave's strategic diagonal punting. Supporters at this stage were nervous with Quins turning to face the diagonal wind. Their anxiety was increased when Atkinson was unfortunate to be yellow-carded by referee Alan Rogan, when Atky and Lawlor both jumped for a high
ball in open play. Yet at 8 mins into the 2nd half, O'Connor kicked a penalty to nudge Quins in front:
Quins 13 Shannon 12.
On 13 mins Buckley was yellow-carded, as were Philpott and Shannon's Pat O'Connor two mins later. At 21 mins Hanvey replaced McCarey temporarily, to complete our front row in our 7-man scrum. On 24 mins Rankin was cautioned having subbed on for the injured Conlon. Following a mauled lineout, McMahon secured an unconverted try to make the score: Quins 13 Shannon 17.
On 29 mins O'Connor kicked his 3rd penalty: Quins 16 Shannon 17.
On 35 mins O'Connor crucially pushed a penalty to the right of the posts, the
component of the wind, significantly, blowing from left to right.
And so to the denouement, the coda, the coup de grace.

Incredibly 5 metres in from the left-hand touchline and just about on halfway, with the last
kick of the game O'Connor kicked a tremendous penalty, I would estimate at 55 metres
across the aforesaid wind. Amazing, incredible!
The flags went up, - the final whistle sounded: no time for a riposte. Joyous jubilation by the Quins' players contrasted with the frozen statues which were the Shannon players who could hardly move in total disbelief.

. The final score: Quins 19 Shannon 17.

Teams:

Quins:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey

Shannon fielded:
15 Mossy Lawlor 14 David O'Donovan 13 Pat O'Connor 12 John Clogan 11 Andrew Finn 10 Tadgh Bennett 9 Frank McNamara 1 Les Hogan 2 Sean Cronin 3 Tony Buckley 4 Padraic O'Brien 5 Fergal Walsh 6 Phil O'Connor 7 Colm McMahon(C) 8 David Quinlan

This is not hyperbole.
Because we took the Champions on in the 2nd half and defeated them.
This was a terrific team (backs & forwards) performance. Ward was outstanding and O'Connor was magnificent The back three harried and hustled like pit bull terriers.
See you at Blackrock, Stradbrook Rd, next Saturday 27 January 2007.

Of our 6 remaining AIL matches (4 away, 2 at home) 5 teams are in the lower half of the table, below Shannon.

Solly is absolutely correct in targeting all six!
In short, brilliant, miraculous, phenomenal!

Well done everybody!

AIB Cup Round 1
13 January 2007
Grafton Belfast Harlequins
v
Nenagh Ormond
2-30pm at Grafton Arena Deramore Park.

Quins welcomed Nenagh - Ormond to a blustery Deramore for the first time.

Quins were without Paul McKenzie and Paul Marshall to Ulster, while Mark Kettyle and Stuart Philpott were late cry-offs. Especial congratulations go to Paul McKenzie for making his first Heiniken start for Ulster (v Llanelli).

Nenagh elected to play towards the Clubhouse and Quins kicked off.
A strong wind blew transversely, from Newforge to Deramore, South to North, throughout the match. In the first half Quins were solid in scrum, lineout, ruck, maul and tackling. Nenagh were equally determined in defence
Stevenson was cautioned and Ward was yellow-carded - each on the advice of the touch-judge.
Pyper executed two excellent scissors with O'Connor, one of which led to a promising attack. The halftime score was: Quins 0 Nenagh 0.
At halftime it rained cats and dogs and playing conditions became  atrocious.
In the second half Nenagh began to tire as Quins upped the ante. Three tries were scored, by Stevenson, after 14 mins from a series of rucks and mauls, Pyper, after 30 mins and following his own delicate chip to force a lineout, and Cave after 40 mins, from a delicate boxed kick by Kirkwood. Pyper converted all three, the last from wide-out. Indeed Pyper impressed throughout.
Thus the final score, three goals to nil, was: Quins 21 Nenagh 0.
Simon Rea had subbed on for O'Connor with Pyper going to outhalf and McKeever to centre, with Rea going to the left wing.
The Teams:
Quins: 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey 9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Gavin McLoughlin 12 Keith Pyper 13 Darren Cave 14 Mike McKeever 15 Jonny Lowe

It would appear that the AIL Cup quarter-final will be on the 3rd February.

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Dungannon
 AIB/AIL I, 6th Jan 2007, KO 2-30pm,
Grafton Arena, Deramore Park

On a clear but cold day, Quins elected to play from the Pavilion End, with Dungannon kicking off.

McCarter kicked 2 penalties at 17 and 21 mins (the latter having been reversed by referee David Wilkinson);
O’Connorreplied at 32 mins to leave the halftime score at Quins 3 Duns 6.
This was despite Stevenson being yellow-carded for offside (!) at 25 mins, while Fitzpatrick and Rainey were merely cautioned after 9 mins, for trampling.
In the 2nd half, Caldwell at 5, McCarter at 29 and Hennessey at 32 mins had three tries for Duns, with McCarter converting his own try, under the posts.
Quins' only riposte was a penalty at 9 mins by O'Connor.
A turning point had been at 15 mins into the 2nd half, when Duns were penalised for tackling the man without the ball: Pehi was yellow carded. Crucially the penalty, which would have brought the score to 9-11,was missed.

Final Score: Quins 6  -  Dungannon 23

As the video will show (I do not view any videos), at 6-11 down, some wild passing led to our demise. After all, we were playing with the breeze, by choice. Their 3 tries came from a maul, an intercept (McCarter looked  a metre offside) and a breakdown/ruck, consecutively.

Our pack performed admirably throughout; some indiscipline was to be expected given the extensive aggression of the Duns' pack.

Teams: Quins : 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Ward(VC) 9 Paul Marshall 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Gavin McLoughlin 12 Johnny McClaughlin 13 Darren Cave 14 Jonny Lowe 15 Mark Kettyle
Dungannon: 1 Mark Neilly 2 Nigel Brady 3 Declan Fitzpatrick 4 Michael Rainey 5 Ryan Caldwell 6 Stuart Lamb 7 Thomas Anderson 8 Andy Hughes 9 David Spence 10 Richard McCarter 11 Mark Scott 12 Paul Magee 13 Neil Patterson 14 Michael Pehi 15 John McGurkin.

PS Congratulations to Quins' IIIs on an excellent but close win over Bangor IIIs at home in the Crawford Cup!

University of Limerick/Bohemians
v Grafton Belfast Harlequins
2pm, 16 December 2006,at
Annacotty, Limerick: AIB/AIL I.

Quins elected to face the elements: slope, diagonal wind and sun. UL/Bohs kicked off accordingly. After 2 mins, Quins earned a penalty on the home-22 straight in front of the posts; it was missed. After 12 mins, a Quins penalty was reversed and a player cautioned for a high tackle, following a touch judge's flag.

For the 1st 10 mins of the half it had mostly been all Quins. The rest of the half, against the elements, was mostly hard graft in defence. Unfortunately on the halfhour, Minnis was yellow-carded for preventing the ball emerging from the ruck. Even more unfortunately, on the stroke of half time, with only seven forwards, O'Gorman got in for a try, converted by Martin.

Half Time: UL/Bohs 7 Quins 0.
One national paper wrote ''Lowly Quins were never really in touch '' -- which is utter
nonsense, with no account of conditions.
I thought Quins ,and Marshall especially, did well in the 1st half to keep the homeside out, right up to the 40th min. At 6 mins into the 2nd half O'Connor hit a penalty after a good run by Stevenson:
UL/ Bohs 7 Quins 3.
After 10 mins, Martin got a stroke of luck when his penalty kick hit the left upright ,high up, and cleared the cross-bar by a foot: UL/Bohs 10 Quins 3.
Two minutes later, O'Connor hit a penalty: UL/Bohs 10 Quins 6.
At 16 mins we had the coup d'etat; Lawlor boxed his punt into the left corner.A weak
mis-hit punt allowed Hanley to score an easy unconverted try:
UL/Bohs 15 Quins 6.
On 37 mins O'Connor kicked his 3rd penalty to earn Quins a bonus point, their 2nd point of the Season. Although referee Eanna O'Dowd added on 5 mins, mostly for injury time, and although we scrummed the last penalties, going for a try or penalty try, we just couldn't quite manage it. Final score: UL/Bohs 15 Quins 9.

So, played 7 lost 7, but to be fair we approached our level of play at Garryowen, on Dec 2nd, in terms of effort and commitment. Lady luck was not on our side and two errors of judgment were the simple difference!
I thought the mauling was excellent, indeed the front 5 were solid and I thought, in alphabetical order, our Ulster players: Andress, McKenzie and Stevenson showed leadership. Perhaps our presentation and distribution from rucks remains a little on the slow side. Perhaps, also, it was too easy for a fast, fit University backline to use the drift defence. But at 31 mins of the 1st half, why did a late tackle on McKenzie, not result in a yellow card?
Well into the 2nd half Keith Pyper came on for McLoughlin, with McKenzie moving to the wing.

Eight AIL I matches remain in 2007 for us: 4 at home, 3 in Dublin and 1 in B'mena.
We are 9 points below the relegation line. Can we avoid relegation? Well if we play in these 8 the way we have played away in Limerick twice in the last fortnight against top-4 teams, then it is possible.
We need to practise scoring tries! And we need to be less pedantic, less predictable in our back-play: only my opinion.
Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Paul McKenzie 12 Darren Cave 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Gillespie(C) 7 Stephen Minis 8 Chris McCarey.

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Clontarf

Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Paul McKenzie 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Gillespie(C) 7 Rob Devonshire 8 Chris McCarey

Clontarf fielded:
15 D.O'Shea 14 P.Howard 13 M Nethery 12 C.Keegan 11 N.O'Brien 10 N. McNamara 9 F.O'Loughlin 1 J.Wickham 2 N. Carson 3 A.J. Clarke 4 A.Trenier 5 J.Duffy 6 S.Crawford 7 D.Quinn 8 M.Garvey

Perhaps a little surprisingly Quins elected to face a strong component of the Sun, playing left to right as viewed from the stand. Accordingly Clontarf kicked off. The Sun was to go down a few minutes into the 2nd half.
After 7 mins, Clark scored a try for Clontarf from a maul after a penalty, having mauled the previous lineout. After 15 mins, Marshall made a great break on the blind-side and Lowe jinked in for an excellent try, converted by O'Connor:

Quins 7 Clontarf 5.
From the restart, Quins failed to fully support Stevenson in the maul. A Quin went offside and from the ensuing penalty, Clontarf kicked and found touch, mauled possession and Duffy was driven over, for a try converted by
Nethery:

Quins 7 Clontarf 12.

Right on halftime, Quins conceded a penalty for a high tackle. Nethery made the score: Quins 7 Clontarf 15.
In the 2nd half, after 1 min and 7 mins O'Connor kicked a total of 6 points, two Clontarf players having been cautioned:
Quins 13 Clontarf 15.
After 16 mins, O'Shea scored a third try for Clontarf though it did appear that the defender's would-be tackle on Nethery was obstructed by referee Dermot Maloney:

Quins 13 Clontarf 20.
After 21 mins, Clontarf were penalised for swing-hooking and O'Connor kicked an excellent penalty:
Quins 16 Clontarf 20,
which embraced bonus-point territory (as had 13-20).

However following a sequence of rucks and mauls, sub Dorrian (for Clarke) scored a try at 26 mins, the visitors' fourth, converted by Nethery.

So the final score was to be:
Quins 16 Clontarf 27,

5 points for Clontarf including a bonus point for 4 tries.
Although another 19 minutes were to be played, the game was effectively over.
During the 2nd half, the other sub for the visitors was A.O'Donnell for Wickham, while for Quins, Stephen Minnis, Keith Pyper, Simon Rea and Ben Hanvey subbed on for Gillespie and McKenzie (both injured), McLaughlin and
Philpott, respectively. Each side had nearly achieved 2 intercept tries, but for knock-ons.

Clontarf are into the current top 4; nevertheless their stand supporters behind me were highly critical of their team's play! I fear it was not exactly an entertaining game, strewn as it was with errors.

We are now 10 points below the relegation line with 9 games remaining (5 away, 4 at home). Our main weakness appears to me to be our mauling in attack and defence. Arising from mauls we have conceded 5 tries to nil in the last 2 games (OK top 4 teams).
I would suppose that ideally, a maul should be like a scrum only with the ball in hand: low tight binding with all 8 in concert in shoulder-pushing position, whether in attack or in defence. Another problem concerning our inability to score in the last 19 mins, was that Clontarf's captain was spoiling clean ball from our solid scrummage.
To be frank, we did not play as well as we did in Garryowen last week; so I can not see my way to naming a Quins' man of the match. For Clontarf, Nethery was impressively elusive and a good enough goal kicker ( he did miss a couple in the 1st half).

AIL1 , Dooradoyle , Saturday 2nd December 2006
Garryowen vs Grafton Belfast Harlequins

Quins elected to face the fairly strong wind (not as bad as in Sunday's drive!) having won the toss and playing left to right in the first half(looking from the Clubhouse). For the first ten minutes,Garryowen looked out of sorts and Quins looked solid in scrum, lineout, ruck, maul and tackle. It was good to have Andress and Stevenson back, after their respective long-term injuries. Lock Stevenson had a barnstorming run after 7 minutes, handing off one and
shouldering another in the Garryowen 22/Clubhouse corner.
Garryowen were standing off the tackles. Andress at tight-head was keeping the scrum square .Because of this the scrum frequently crabbed to the Garryowen loose-head side as they tried to wheel us; they should have been
penalised accordingly.
Unfortunately after 20 minutes, Quins lost a lineout on their own throw, not for the last time and following a long sequence of rucks and mauls, Garryowen hooker Varley scored what might be termed a pushover try, converted by fullback Kilroy:
Garryowen 7 Quins 0.

After 34 minutes,a very promising long run by Cave ended with an intercepted pass .Even more unfortunately,in time added on, left wing O'Riordan who had come on for O'Boyle, scored in the left-hand corner, following a sliced
Quins touch kick and persistent Garryowen mauling from the ensuing lineout. Kilroy hit a magnificent conversion virtually from the touchline.Still, 14-0 to Garryowen at halftime was promising enough, with Quins turning round to use the wind.

The final nail in our coffin however came at 16 minutes into the second half, when a Quin's offside allowed Kilroy to kick a penalty to make it: Garryowen 17 Belfast Harlequins 0, which was to prove to be the final score.

It has to be said that throughout the 2nd half Quins' backs attacked incessantly, but stout defence and some mishandling denied us the try which we undoubtedly deserved.
It was a little surprising perhaps that International referee Alain Rolland had allowed Garryowen not only to crab the scrums but also to 'duck-dive' at the rucks (and not roll away) and to collapse the entire front-5 of the scrum, without
penalty, as they fought to protect their lead in the 2nd half at all costs. C'est la vie!

As the 2nd half wore on, Ben Hanvey, Mike Graham, Rory Blakeknox and Roger Kirkwood subbed on for Philpott, Gillespie, Reihana(injured) (with Kettyle going to centre)and Marshall, respectively. Garryowen also brought on other subs.
I like to see a loosehead prop not only propping and lifting but also tackling in the open like an openside flanker. So I nominate Niall Conlon as our man of the match.

To lose like this to the League I leaders in Limerick by 17-0 shows how much we have progressed, with total commitment being shown all round. Perhaps some of younger players showed some inexperience in their handling and kicking. Never mind! Let's give Clontarf a hot reception next week and maintain our increasing confidence and performance.
Unfortunately we have now lost 5 out of 5 and we are now propping up Division I, 6 points behind UCD and Ballymena. Guess who we play away in our last 2 games! Let us hope that with 10 games to go,our significant progress pays dividends in the New Year ,if not before. Certainly the performance on Saturday has given Quins' supporters renewed hope of avoiding relegation in 2007.

Subs were:16 Andy O'Driscoll 17 Shane Hefferman 18 Alan Daly 19 Gary O'Keefe 20 John O'Mahony

The referee was David Keane of Leinster.

Having lost the toss, Harlequins were asked to kick-off and play towards the Clubhouse end, with a strong wind at their backs. At 21 minutes, Pyper kicked a penalty goal from the 10-metre line, the ball bouncing on the top of the right-hand upright before veering off inwards between the posts. Keeshan kicked a simple penalty at 32 minutes from the right for Dolphin, to leave the half time score at Quins 3 Dolphin 3.

As the second half progressed the wind, into which Quins were playing, lowered
in intensity. However, after 14 minutes, Dolphin found touch on the Quins' 5 metre line in the Clubhouse corner.Quins won the lineout, but following a ruck in front of the posts, our scrum half was caught in
possession and from the subsequent Dolphin scrum, the visitors scored a simple try on the blindside in the same Clubhouse corner. Maloney converted to make the score Quins 3 Dolphin 10. Finally Keeshan kicked a penalty from the left to leave the result at Quins 3 Dolphin 13. The penalty had been given for coming in from the side of the ruck.
It should be said that Quins declined two penalty chances, one in each half, straight
in front of the posts. Had we kicked either a bonus point would have ensued.

Let us appraise in general. our weaknesses which include too many turnovers especially at rucks and mauls. As any good referee is taught:i f the whole of the ball can be seen by the helicopter, infinitely high in the air, then the ruck is over and open play ensues, except perhaps when the tackled player has placed the ball. Our kicking for position is lacking, in both senses. In the second half for Quins, Wardy replaced Devonshire and Rourke was unfortunate to be yellow-carded at 25 minutes.
Our strengths included the lineout where McCarey excelled (along with thrower and lifters);our backs' pace was evident as always, but the rub of the green was evanescent, to mix the metaphor. Still, I nominate Mark Kettyle as our man of the match, for his incisive and penetrating runs and counter-runs.
See you in Limerick on the 2nd and 16th December: Garyowen and University of Limerick/Bohemians respectively - with our home match versus Clontarf sandwiched between the two.

Cork Constitution v Grafton Belfast Harlequins.

Quins fielded:
1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Brendan Lynch 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Michael Graham 6 David Johnston 7 Rob Devonshire 8 Chris McCarey (c)  9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Johnny Lowe 12 Mike McKeever 13 Darren Cave 14 Gavin McLoughlin 15 Mark Kettyle
Cork Con fielded:
1 Tom Ryan 2 Robert Quinn 3 Com Murphy 4 John Maloney 5 Mark O'Connor 6 Ross Noonan 7 Brendan Curtis 8 Frank Cogan (c) 9 Peter McKee 10 Conor Quaid 11 Dermot O'Riordan 12 David O'Leary 13 Dermot O'Kane 14 Richard Lane 15 Denis Hurly

Quins elected to receive, facing the Club House and with the sun at their backs in virtually perfect conditions. For nearly half an hour Quins tackled well and the score so reflected, at 3-3: 1 penalty each ,by Lane at 7 mins and for Quins, by O'Connor at 20 mins.

Unfortunately Con scored 2 tries (Maloney 30 mins and O’Kane at 32 mins), the latter converted by Lane to make the half-time score: Cork Con 15 Quins 3.

In the second half ,Con added 10 points: a penalty by Lane at 19 mins and a try rather gifted to Ed Leamy (on for Curtiss) at 43 mins, converted by Lane. The final score was 3 tries,2 penalties and 2 conversions to 1 penalty:

Cork Con 25 Belfast Harlequins 3.

Other subs had been, for Quins: Joe Reihana for McKeever, Conor Keown for Lynch, Ben Hanvey for Philpott, Paul McKenzie for McLoughlin and Andy Ward for Johnston; for Con, Deeny for Maloney, Lyons for Quaid . Murray for Quinn and Soden for Ryan.

Each side had received a yellow card following a front-row skirmish after 10 mins into the second half. Tackling was also so hard in the 2nd half that arising out of injuries I counted 6 mins at least to be added on. As it happened only 4 mins were added. As our man of the match I select Rob Devonshire for his persistent and effective tackling.
Unlike Con we could not convert 5m scrums, mauls, lineouts or rucks into tries. Lack of composure would be a simple description.
In the 2nd half Kettyle's counter runs were highly promising. One chance at least was squandered due to non-transfer of the ball to a man free outside. Another chance was wasted in the 1st half, due to hesitation. Both were down to inexperience.

The injured match captain Colin Atkinson was quoted in the press as opining that our play had improved since the Galwegians and Terenure games .I concur. Our training had been very purposeful on Thursday night.

Special mention must be made of the
Chairman Ian McEvoy who at 5am on Saturday morning chauffeured Paul McKenzie down to Cork, the latter having subbed off the bench at Ravenhill in the Friday night win over Borders: tremendous effort and commitment, by both parties.
We have Derry in the Ulster League, away, next Saturday 11th, then Dolphin at home in the AIL I on the 18th,
followed by a free week on the 25th, then two trips before Christmas to Limerick to play Garryowen and Univ. Limerick/Bohemians, the top 2 Division I leaders. Tough schedule! Let us also congratulate Peter Bates, successful organiser of Belfast Harlequins Supporters. Peter lives in the Isle of Man, so all his games are away!

Team (in all senses) keep at it!

Grafton Belfast Harlequins

v
Terenure College

AIB League Division I
Quins fielded:
1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Brendan Lynch 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Mike Graham 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Rob Devonshire 8 Chris McCarey(C) 9 Paul Marshall 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Paul McKenzie 12 Darren Cave 13 Mike McKeever 14 Gavin McLoughlin 15 Mark Kettyle

Terenure fielded:
1 John Barrett 2 James Blaney 3 Steve Nolan 4 Darren O'Doherty 5 Kevin O'Dwyer 6 Brian Moroney 7 Conor Donnelly 8 Alex Dunlop 9 Rudi Vij 10 Shane Cullen 11 Adam Hughes 12 Killan Coleman 13 John Bollard 14 Brian Flanagan 15 Graham Crawford

Quins lost their first home AIB League Division I match, season 2006/7, to Terenure who were promoted from Division II at the end of season 2005/6. The result was: Harlequins 18 Terenure 23. In 2004/5 we lost our first three matches before reaching the Final. For Quins, in the first half O'Connor kicked a penalty at 21 mins in reply to Terenure's two tries at 6 and 20 mins, the
second of which was converted by Hughes. This was despite the fact that Terenure had asked Quins to use the wind.
It must be said that the constant drizzle created conditions, which suited Terenure's heavier pack, notably 3,4,5 and 8.
Halftime score: Quins 3 Terenure 12.

In the second half our play improved. An O'Connor penalty at 6 mins and two tries, the first at 20 mins by McCarey, converted by O'Connor (giving us a temporary 13-12 lead) and the second at 34 mins by McKenzie, had given Quins a final total of 18. However in the meantime, Terenure had kicked a penalty at 27 mins, by sub outhalf O'Neill, and had scored a try by Dunlop at 29 mins. A final penalty by the same kicker at 41 mins gave Terenure their final total of 23 points.

Our only consolation was a bonus point for finishing less than 8 points behind. It must be said that Quins nearly stole this game in time added on (6 mins), including one massive scrum. But in all honesty they probably did not deserve to eke out a win. Too many missed tackles allowed Terenure to gain massive amounts of territory. One recalls a sliced halfway restart from which O'Doherty ran 50 metres through three missed tackles.

From the stand, one could observe Terenure frequently in front of the back foot of the ruck, maul or scrum. However, Terenure were penalised three times for 'duck diving’, as I call it, and Quins twice for crossing. Each side had a man yellow-carded: Nolan and McKeever respectively (Devonshire was also cautioned after 3 mins).
In the second half, Conor Keown, Ben Harvey, Graham Jewhurst and Johnny Lowe had replaced Lynch, Philpott, Graham and McLoughlin at various times.

I nominate McKenzie for his magnificent second-half try which put us back in the match (18-20) and McCarey for his timely and fifteenth try, off a driving maul and which had given us the lead, however precariously, as our joint men of the match.

One point from two matches: much to do! See you in Cork next Saturday.

Galwegians v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

Quins fielded:
1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Brendan Lynch 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Graham Jewhurst 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Rob Devonshire 8 Chris McCarey(C) 9 Paul Marshall 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Paul McKenzie 12 Keith Pyper 13 Joe Reihana 14 Gavin McLaughlin 15 Mark Kettyle
Subs were 16 Conor Keown 17 Ben Hanvey 18 Steven Robinson 19 Roger Kirkwood 20 Johnny Lowe

Galwegians fielded
1 Dan O'Connell 2 Conor Muldoon 3 Ross Davies 4 Derek Boyd 5 Andre Browne 6 Brendan O'Connor 7 Aaron McKettigan (C) 8 Ambrose Conboy(C) 9 Luke Stringer 10 Paddy O'Toole 11 Conor McPhillips 12 Nick Wakley 13 Anthony Barrett 14 Kieran Hickman 15 Dave Slemen
Subs were:
16 Denis O'Brien 17 Jarlath Naughton 18 Liam Scahill 19 Tom Ellard 20 PeterDurkan

Playing into the wind, by choice, Quins were sent packing 24-0 by Galwegians by halftime. Galwegians centre kicked a penalty at 8 mins; a try by McPhillips converted by O'Toole at 17 mins made it 10-0.
Almost immediately, Quins' outhalf O'Connor had his wayward pass intercepted and Barrett, with the Quins' defence committed to attack, fairly raced in; again O’Toole converted it.
To complete their 1st half-scoring at 27 mins, the prop Davies scored under the posts. The conversion made it 24-0.

However it must be said that controversy arose when the wing Hickman was cautioned for a late and high tackle. Surprisingly the referee declined to award neither a yellow card nor a penalty try. As it transpired Quins started the 2nd half bravely with the wind and with much constructive purpose after a good chin-wagging from Wardy.

After 3 mins McLaughlin scored a good try and a simple penalty by O'Connor after 8 mins made the score a plausible 24-8. Unfortunately for Quins that was as good as it got. On the stroke of time McPhillips made it a personal brace of tries and Galwegians had secured 5 points with a bonus point for their 4 tries.

In retrospect but for the 2 missed penalties and the intercept try we would have been only 14-17 down with 20 mins to go.
In the 2nd half Lowe and Keown for Reihana and Conlon and Durkan and Naughton for Slemen and Boyd were the respective subs.
Quins had too many knock-ons and too many sliced kicks, resulting in a loss of edge, despite sound scrums and lineouts.

Quins play Terenure at home in a fortnight and have 2 weeks to bounce back.

Although Rourke and Marshall were to the fore, the men of the match were mostly on the Galwegians side.

Final Score: Galwegians 29 - Quins 8

Shannon 31        Grafton Belfast Harlequins 15

In their final AI League Division 1 match for season 2005/2006 Grafton Belfast Harlequins lost 15-31 to Shannon  in perfect conditions. The match kickoff at 3pm to accommodate RTE2.

Shannon secured five points ( five tries), finished fourth and face Garryowen ( League Champions) away in one of the Playoff semi-finals.
Decided by only points differential over Shannon, Cork Con. are away in the other semi to Clontarf.

Quins finished a commendable sixth in this our  year of reorganisation, following last year's Final appearance, the understandable( in this professional era) exodus of players, the lack of time for player recruitment and the general discontinuity.
Well done, Wardy!

Looking back, the loss of 3 league points away at each of St Mary's and  Buccaneers, in the dying moments, made no difference to our final League position, since the University of Limerick/ Bohemians finished in 5th place, ten points ahead of us, even though they lost to us on 14 January at Deramore.
The top four( sic) each put over 30 points on us, the equivalent of 6 tries.

To the match, however; Shannon scored 5 tries: three in the first half ( McNamara (3), B.Tuohy (24) and O'Donovan (42 mins) with two converted by Delaney and in the second ( again B.Tuohy No. 13(8) and Lawlor No 15 (26mins), the latter converted by Bennett.

Quins, after an early penalty by McClaughlin (14 mins), scored two 2nd half tries (Kettyle (29) and Rowan Frost( 34 mins); the former converted by Glancy was magnificent.

Shannon's strengths were in the lineout and their ability to attack through their backs left or right, with the ball in hand and swarming forward like gaelic footballers, when halfbreak was made.

We lost six of our own lineouts in the first half, no doubt due to a combination of jumping, lifting and throwing inaccuracies.
As the former Irish Captain, Ciaran Fitzgerald, said on  RTE , Quins are a young side and several of our younger players did make simple errors.

Shannon had two fish-suppers: numbers 13 and 15 ( see above) who scored 3 of their tries: "as in couldn't tackle a fish-supper".
So at 3-19 at halftime, the match was already out of reach, especially since just before, hard-tackling Atky had to go off injured. Also a pity about the Donovan try.
Pyper, Rowan Frost and Glancy subbed on either side of halftime.

The second half was 12 points each thus reflecting a considerable improvement.
So we could hold our heads high after an exciting comeback.
our scrummaging was excellent throughout and my congratulations to loosehead Conor Keown on what was probably his last game as Club Captain, a role he has filled admirably. Well Done !

Our match captain Johnny Lowe's tackling was absolutely immaculate saving at least two tries.

For his lineout play and overall endeavour, especially his tackling, my man of the match is Gareth Rourke.

Shannon named Mossy Lawlor ( that No 15 again) as man of the match.

A last word goes to congratulate President Roy MacDougal on hsi year in office, an excellent humorous gentleman on all occasions( not over until 8/9 June, he tells me).

Grafton Belfast Harlequins 33        Blackrock College 19

The penultimate game of the season 2005/2006 AIL Division 1 saw Grafton  Belfast Harlequins gain  a victory over Blackrock College at Deramore on Easter Saturday including a bonus point for 4 well taken tries.

With only Shannon to play, in Limerick, on the 29th we are in 6th place and are guaranteed sixth or seven.

Well done , everyone! Especially Andy Ward and the coaching staff, Conor Keown ( Club Captain in his last home game), Johnny Lowe( 1st XV match Captain and Porcelanosa Man of the match )

I though time-reversal occurred only in quantum mechanics, so I can only deduce that our scoreboard is entirely classical, awarding Blackrock an extra 3 points at a rather critical time!
Clearly irreversible!

Our two first-half tries were scored by Chris McCarey( 28 Mins)and By Roger Kirkwood( 38 mins). Prime factors respectively, were the Blackrock yelow cardand an exhilarating break by Colin Atkinson.

The Quins two second half tries were both scored  by Johnny Lowe( 25,30 mins) following excellent handling by Mike Glancy and for the first, by Darren Cave and for the second, by Colin Atkinson. Three penalties and 2 conversions by Johnny McClaughlin completed the 33 points.

As for Blackrock they started and ended well with one first -half and 2 second-half tries, with 2 conversion. However , just before halftime , they did miss a comparatively easy penalty which would have given them a 10-10 halftime score.

This was an enteraining match on a very pleasant day. Mauls, rucks, lineouts, tackling were good. Perhaps there were a few unnecessary knock-ons.

Contrary to the official programme, Mike McKeever started for the injured Paul McKenzie and Brendan Lynch for Rod Moore( outgoing Ulster contractee). Garethe Rouke and William Tang replaced Rob Devonshire and Stuart Phillpott in the second halh, as did Mike Glancy ( outhalf) and Keith Pyper( left wing) for Nopera Stewart and Darren Cave, with Mike Mckeever and Johnny McClaughlin moving into the centre.

I hope the referee will forgive me for reminding him that 2 necessary criteria must be fulfilled simultaneously, for a tackle to be completed:
(1) Ball-carrier held (2) Ball-carrier on the ground( at least one knee!).
If (2) is not fulfilled and there are two would-be tacklers, a maul has ensued and continues!

I though also that our ball catching/ fielding from restarts and garryowens was excellent and taking this into account I recommend Colin Atkinson as my man of the match, given that Johnny Lowe quite correctly was elected "Porcleanosa Man of the Match"

And so to Ravenhill on Wednesday @7pm for the McCrea Cup( 2nd XV)and Friday @7:30 pm  fo the First Trust Senior Cup( 1 stXV ), both against Malone. Let's not underestimate them, especially now they have retained AIL Division 2 status! Watch out for ex-Quins!

All the best, Quins!

The Prof.

ps Also congratulations to our Football Committee, not least on weather ing last season's storm

AIL1
Clontarf  36   Grafton Belfast Harlequins  8

Clontarf secured five points to go top of AIB League Division 1, defeating Belfast Harlequins 36-8 in the antepenultimate round of AIB 1. Incessant rain on an already muddy pitch ensure atrocious playing conditions.

This was the match of "Marks" for Clontarf in the first half not  Luke or Johns (Mark Hewitt 3,30 mins) and again (Mark Woods  28 mins)

Mark Kettyle scored for Quins after 3 minutes into the second half
Clontarf converted 3 of the tries while Johnny McClaughlin kicked a penalty for Quins 16 minutes into the match. Each side received a yellow card for their troubles.

Quins used a number of replacements in the second half, whether due to injury or tactically Keith Pyper and Mike Glancy for Roger Kirkwood and Mike Mckeever, with Johnny Lowe and Johnny McClaughlin moving to scrumhalf and center respectively. Ben Worthington ( for Brendan Lynch) with Conor Keown moving over to tighthead, and Andy Ward for Colin Atkinson( after a welcome return)

Quins battled manfully with endeavour and industry. tackling, lineouts( all three Jumpers and their helpers), scrums and mauls wer all generally very good. The game was well refereed, especially given the virtually indistinguishable muddy wet jerseys.

However
Clontarf played well with determination appropiate to a top-4 team who had beaten Cork Con. and Shannon. Their forwards(3, 4, 5 6) were big ,heavy, strong and powerful and were able to turn us over on many occasions, especially in the first half playing downhill on a treacherous surface. Sheer weight tells in such conditions. Also their halfbacks controlled the game well.

Turning points for us were
(a) Conceding 7 points after just 3 minutes.
(b) Conceding  a rather soft try after 38 minutes.
(c) Not being able to score a try at a 5 meter scrum just before        halftime, following the Clontarf yellow card.

In short this match was lost in the first half

Bad luck Quins. We're still in 6th place, 3 points ahead of Buccaneers and UCD.

Let's give it a rattle on April 15th-v- Blackrock, in the penultimate(and last home) AIB league match, not to mention the small matter of the Senior Cup semifinal -v- Ballymena at home also on April 1st.

The Prof.

PS. Warm congratulations to the 2nd XV and their coach/manager Arthur  Campbell on reaching the McCrea Cup Final, having already won the 2nd XV league.

Grafton Belfast Harlequins 22
Cork Constitution   53

Apart from a slightly slippy surface, due to an early sleet shower, this was a pleasant day for rugby.

Unfortunately Con did to us what we did to Dublin University. Con scored 8 tries (20,34 minutes ) firrst half, (41, 58,61, 66, 80, & 83) into the second.
Cork players No 3 Ross, No 11 Healy and No 15 Lane were prominent in at least half of these.

A yelow card for Andy Ward was unfortunate since their fourth and fifth tries came during his absence. He was off for 17 minutes yet the referee played only 3 minutes of time added on. Contradiction, especially when we were trying very hard to get a bonus point via a fourth try.

Cork Con are an extremely good side and a Cup/League double would be no surprise.

It was good to see Lewis Stephenson back having several barnstorming runs handling off all in sight. I thought Roger Kirkwood had an excellent debut in the circumstances. There actually were improvements over the Buccaneers game (at the break down and the last line-of- defence tackling).Unfortunately the lineouts and the scrums were not so good.

Also for the last Con try , the sub scrum half No. 19 was clearly offside, but still a mere perturbation

For the record Rowan Frost(26) cave at (72) and Kettyle ( 76) scored our three tries. Glancy converted 2 and a penalty.

Now in sixth place in the league with three to go: Contarf (A)@ Mar 25, Blackrock (H) @ April 15 and Shannon (A) @ April 29--- 7 points ahead of the  chasing pack of Buccaneers, UCD and  Dungannon . The bottom  three Galwegians, Dublin University, and Co Carlow cannot now catch us , so relegation definitely avoided.

Who would have been confident last summer to so predict?

PS.1
Should we have declined the conversation of our third try ( as in seven- a -side) to maximise the remaining playing time.
PS. 2
Glad to see Bertie  at the match.

Buccaneers 33 – 32 Belfast Harlequins

As reported by "The Prof"  (Many thanks)

Belfast Harlequins travelled south to Athlone in search of a win to boost there chances of a top four finish. Alas it was not to be as the Buccaneers fullback Tom Cregan scored a try in the 8th minute of injury time, which he converted to deny Quins by a single point.

Quins however scored 4 tries and secured the second bonus point by only loosing by 1 point.  So Quins managed to salvage 2 point from this encounter.

That leaves us in 5th position in the league, 7 points ahead of Dungannon. We have 4 matches remaining to secure a top 4 position.  Cork Constitution (H) Clontarf and Shannon (A) Blackrock (H)

this was for the neutral supporter a very exciting and entertaining match. Both sides used their backs in perfect conditions on a very wide pitch.  We won, lost, won and finally with the last kick of the match lost this match.  We scored two excellent tries to be 17-3 up after 15 minutes following an exchange of penalties.  However by the 30th minute Buccaneers had replied with two further penalties to leave the score at 17-9.

As halftime approached a maul from a 5m lineout resulted in a try for Buccaneers leaving the halftime score 17-16 in favour of Quins. The second half started well for the home side when they scored a converted try after only 3 minutes to leave Quins trailing by 17-23. However great alertness, innovation and quick hands from a penalty saw Mark Kettyle score in the left corner for a try. Score now 23-22.

It was Game on and Buccaneers further extended their lead through a drop goal from Tom Cregan on 27 minutes, score now 26-22.  Earlier the Munster referee had spoken to both captains in the final 10 minutes of the half Quins scored an excellent and converted try from a rolling maul from a lineout.  The score now going in favour of Quins by 29-26.

On 42 minutes Mike Glancy kicked an excellent goal (of the crossbar) score now 32-26 to Quins.  Amazingly with 8 minutes on the clock over the allotted 40 Buccaneers no 15 the irrepressible Tom Cregan scored a try from a bad pass and added the points with an excellent conversion from the right hand touchline. With that the referee blew the final whistle leaving the score in favour of the home side by the narrowest of margins 33-32.

So why the disappointing loss of three points:-  was it the two yellow cards Q 15 just before half time or Q 13 just before full time, probably not after Cork Con last week.

In the writers humble opinion in descending order might include

not clearing out at the ruck/tackle situations resulting in a number of turn overs.   Sliced hooked aimless punts. Permitting Buccaneers to wheel the scrum during the 2nd half. At 82 minutes did we ask the referee how long was on the clock?
On the positive side lineouts, scrums good except for 3. Goal kicking and passing were good, both teams used substitutes wisely.  Man of the match probably Paul McKenzie.

Saturday 18 February 2006 in Athlone:
 28th January 2006

AIL 1
Quins 21 - Ballymena 20

Match Photographs

Weather conditions at Deramore were cold and dry but overcast, with a breeze blowing away from the Clubhouse.

Quins made a number of changes following their defeat at Dungannon. Johnny Lowe returned after injury.  Johnny McClaughlin moved to the bench, while Norpera Stewart made a suprise appearance at the expense of AIL1's "top three" points scorer Mike Glancy.

Reece Spee and Coiln Atkinson were  missing  thriough injury, with Mike Finlay  and Andy Ward starting.

Quins played towards the Clubhouse in the first half.
Despite early pressure from Ballymena, it was Quins who took the lead  after 10 minutes through a straightforward Norpera Stewart penalty. (3-0) However, 5 minutes later, after more Ballymena pressure, a loose clearance kick by  Quins was fielded by Dirkie Strydon inside his own half . By the time Quins had  agreed who should tackle him, his diagonal run had taken  him to the Quins 22. He then pushed a delightful (to Ballymena supporters) grubber kick to the right hand corner and the grateful Scott Young dived on the ball unhampered. Paddy Wallace's conversion  from the corner flag zoomed sweetly through the posts. (3-7)

A further Paddy Wallace penalty brought the score to 3 -10, and  after 22 minutes  the same individual, suprisingly (certainly to the Quins defence), ran a quick penalty in front of the Quins posts. His floated pass allowed Henry Head  to drive over midway on the right. Paddy Wallace again converted to bring the score to 3 - 17. At this point, the home supporters were shrugging their shoulders and shaking their heads in anticipation of even greater misery to come.

In addition, Mike McKeever had firstly received temporary marching orders from referee Alan Lewis and then suffered a nasty cut ear  which eventually ending his further participation  - with Johnny McClaughlin coming on.
More pressure came from Ballymena, but suprisingly it was Quins who scored. Johnny Lowe broke away on the right wing  using both pace and guile. Support was at hand and Darren Cave burst through spectactularly to score in the corner. (The try was similar in both quality and brilliance to the many scored by his father, Brian   ............    said his father, Brian.)
Norpera Stewart's  attempt at a conversion left a lot to be desired and the score at 8 - 17. Norpera missed a further simple penalty, but Quins now had their tails up.  Almost on half time, a great break by Chris McCarey nearly led to a score under the Ballymena posts, but the pack took on the recycled ball and drove towards the  line on the stand side. A further movement saw Johnny McClaughlin dive over near the corner. (13 - 17)
Johnny, himself, converted to make the half time score 15-17.

Thus, Quins had suprisingly  reached half time only 2 points down  and had the wind on their backs in the second half.
However the early play saw Ballymena dominant and the Quins defence needed to be at its very best to ensure Ballymena didn't "return to the groove". After 20 minutes, Ballymena increased their lead to 5 points through a Paddy Wallace penalty. (15 - 20)

As the game moved to a conclusion,  Mike Glancy, who had come on for Norpera Stewart, brought Quins back to within 2 points with a well struck penalty. (18 - 20). With the game moving into injury time, Quins were awarded a penalty 30 metres out on their left hand touchline. Mike Glancy struck the ball well but to the relief of the Ballymena supporters, and the agony of the Quins supporters, it drifted just outside the posts.

From the drop out Quins regained possesion and  some ferocious  (and frantic) running brought play to the Ballymena 22. When the ball reached Mike Glancy, to the delight of the faithful Quins supporters, he clipped over a sweet drop goal. Quins were ahead for the first time. 21 - 20 !!
The kick also brought Mike's points total in this season's AIL to over the 100 mark!
The excitement was not over however. From the kick off Ballymena regained possession and Paddy Wallace lined himself up for a drop goal. To the relief of Quins, it went high and wide and they had won an amazing game.

Both sides should be proud of themselves. This was an entertaining match, but someone had to win .
Chris McCarey deservedly won the Man of the Match award, but this was an excellent team performance after the disasters of the first 20minutes. A number of Quins players will be very pleased with themselves, but, in particular, Mike  Glancy must be praised for his coolness  and technique in taking the wiinning drop goal, especialy after his disappointment in  narrowly missing the previous "match winning" penalty.

Quins 21: McClaughlin(1T,1C), Cave (1T), Stewart (1P), Glancy (1P, 1D)

Dungannon 17 - Quins 6

Match Photographs

Stevenson Park enjoyed perfect weather for good rugby with a clear blue sky, sunshine and little or no breeze. While the underboot conditions were soft, all augured well for a good display of rugby.

Quins arrived on the crest of a wave, as the form team with 5 consecutive victories   -  in the All Ireland League, the All Ireland Cup and the Ulster Senior Cup , together with an envious strike rate. Dungannon, on the other hand, were still recovering from an unexpectedly heavy defeat by UCD. Having said that, Quins supporters were still trying to rember how and when Quins last beat Dungannon ! (no prizes for correct answers!)

Quins team list showed the loss of captain Johnny Lowe (with Johnny McClaughlin moving to the wing and Mike McKeever in the centre) and Rod Moore (all expenses paid  trip to Treviso  with Ulster!). Against this, they welcomed back Andrew Gillespie and Reece Spee.

The game kicked off with Quins playing away from the main road, the Pavillion on their right. Initial free runnning from Quins was thwarted by Dungannon, but a penalty after 5 minutes from Mike Glancy put Quins 0-3 up.
Almost immediately, Dungannon replied  with a Gareth Steenson  penalty and after a further 5 minutes, he repeated the dose to put Dungannon 6 - 3 up. By now the game may have developed a pattern , but even the most educated observer may have failed to spot it as deliberate. Quins ploy of using the back of the lineout, to allow the early release of their backs, resulted in Dungannon receiving unexpected possession. Also. Quins ability to upset the referee with their mauling technique led to Dungannon receiving welcome penalties  - usually just when Quins had achieved promising field positions. Paul McKenzie and Darren Cave both made excellent breaks but on both occassions, were hauled down just when a final pass would have resulted in a score.

So, at half time the score remained at 6-3 to Dungannon  and all to play for.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, a further Gareth Steenson penalty put Dungannon 9 - 3 up. This stung Quins and when the re-start was mishandled by Dungannon they were rewarded with a scrum just 10 yards out, under the Dungannon posts. Unfortunately Reece Spee's pass to Mike Glancy ended up a yard behind him. Dungannon hacked through and a successioon of almosts saw Tyrone Howe hack over in the left hand corner for a length of the field try. (14 - 3)

Oh dear, oh dear. This was not converted  and the opmimistic Quins supporter (if there was one), may have thought - "more than 20 minutes to go, two converted tries ........ "

Indeed, Quins certainly had enough opportunities in the next 20 plus minutes to score at least 2 tries, but Dungannon refused to co-operate and wave after wave of Quins attacks wre repelled by a well organised defence, or foundered on unforced errors as Quins played catch-up rugby.

Almost continuous territorial advantage provided multiple opportunities but balls went to heel or were knocked on. Despite this the inherent skill was there but the break throughs frustrated. Further penalties by Steenson and Johnny McClaughlin took the score to 17-6. By this stage,  Quins brought on Norpera Stewart and Andy Ward for Mike Glancy  and Colin Atkinson.  Two moves illustrated that this was not to be Quins day. With 5 minutes to go,  a Quins break under the Dungannon posts and a 2 man overlap, ended up with a Dungannon intercept 5 yards from their own  line and Quins returned to their own 22.

Finally, with the last move of the game, a simple pass 3 yards out, to allow Johnny McClaughlin  on the right wing  a walk over the line, went over his head. Oh dear - again.

While Paul McKenzie's sorties in the first half merit mention, as does the physical effort put in by many, the team  would find a "man of the match" award at odds with the way they collectively failed, on the day, to do themselves justice against an in - your-face Dungannon side.

Ah well, lets be both philosophical and poetic. We  have taken one step back on the Stairway to Heaven - we haven't fallen off it. We can still see the top, and should now realise what we require to get there.  There is another notch on the hand-rail of experience - something which this young side will use as we continue our quest.

Well done Dungannon.

P.S. Last week we beat UL Bohs. UL Bohs had beaten Clontarf. Yesterday Clontarf beat Shannon. So ... it's a funny old game!

Quins 31 - UL Bohs 27

Match Photographs

Clear blue skies and a crisp pitch welcomed our Limerick visitors to Deramore.

Quins welcomed back Stuart Philpot and Chris McCarey. However, a very fit looking Reece Spee was under Ulster orders to remain on the touchline (replaced by Mike Finlay), and Andrew Gillespie was unavailable.

Bohs came to the Grafton Arena with an impressive record. They had lost only 3 matches to-date - and these were against the  current leading  sides in AIL 1 - Shannon, Cork Con and Garryowen. Indeed, they had only lost to Cork Con 23 - 21, and they had defeated Clontarf. So an interesting encounter ?

Quins, playing away from the Pavillion, produced a whirlwind start and agressive back play saw them threatening the Bohs line continuously during  the first 5 minutes. Excellent Bohs defence just about held out and a dropped Quins pass was hacked through by Bohs to the Quins 25.  It appeared that Johnny McClaughlin had saved the day by out- pacing the Bohs attacker, but Mike Glancy's clearance kick was charged down for a Bohs try just to the left of the posts. The conversion left a startled Quins 7 - 0 down.
Quins immediately returned to the attack and a good vision by Mike Glancy,  saw Johnny McClaughlin scythe through  the Bohs defence to score an excellent try under the posts.  Mike Glancy's conversion levelled the scores at 7 - 7.  Within minutes, a powerful break by Paul McKenzie on the left wing saw him coming inside the Bohs full back before pasing outside again for the overlapping  Darren Cave to scamper over. 14 -7.
With Quins unable to gain consistent possession, two Bohs' penalty brought the score back to 14 - 13, and just on the half time whistle a converted try put Bohs further ahead at 14 - 20.
Despite the promise shown by the Quins back line, Bohs half time lead was not undeserved -  even allowing for the referee's tuneful display affecting Quins' continuity.

Quins started the second half on the atack like the first, but having reverted to their Navy/Sky blue kit.  Mike Glancy's penalty after 10 minutes brought the score to 17 - 20.
Continued Quins pressure led to a searing break by Mark Kettyle and having only paused to beat yet another half-dozen players, he screamed in under the posts for a startingly good try after 20 minutes.  The conversion left Quins ahead 24 - 20.

Continued Quins pressure in the pack saw a rumbling maul go over the Bohs line for a Stuart Philpott try to the left of the posts. This gave us a valuable bonus point and  the conversion a 31 - 20 lead.

Allthough John Andress has a 10 minute rest together wih his opposite number for overfamiliarity, Quins continued in control . Conor Keown deputised with Rob Devonshire taking on an observational role.
Finally, deep into injury time, with replacement Andy Ward on the side lines for upsetting the ref, Bohs scored in the right hand corner and the conversion left the final score at 31 - 27 - with Bohs thus also taking a bonus point
Make no mistake, this was a good win against a strong Bohs side who's scrummaging and line-out prowess will cause many a problem to other sides before the season is over.
Man of the match ?   While Rourky appeared everwhere in a most frisky and athletic performance, ....... for his match (and head) turning try, the vote must go to Mark Kettyle - well done Sparky!

Dublin University 14 - Quins 41

The New Year's  rugby commenced at a cold and overcast College Park. The visiting supporters appeared to have anticipated this, as they were well prepared through some very effective pre-fuelling at both the Trinity Bar and Rolys.

Quins welcomed back John Andress, but were missing both Stuart Philpott and Chris McCarey. Thus Andy Ward started at No 8 and Andrew Gillespie moved to hooker.

Quins dominated the early stages with some flashy rugby from their backs but the final pass didn't come and the home defence was excellent. Johnny Lowe in particular appeared to have got rocket-propelled boots for Xmas.

After 15 minutes, Trinity appeared to have weathered the storm and were now throwing the ball about themselves. However, intent on some clever sleight of hand on the half way line, their scrum half''s  flicked inside pass was intercepted by Reece Spee who took off at great speed to touch down under the posts. Mike Glancy converted to leave the score at 7 - 0.

The remainder of the half was dominated by Quins with intermittent, but often dangerous, break outs by Trinity. Mike Glancy, who was in commanding form both running and kicking, converted 2 further penalties to leave the half time score at 13 - 0.

The second half commenced as the first with some excellent back play from Quins. Following a marvellous break by Johnny McClaughlin,  Rob Devonshire crashed over. Mike Glancy converted to make the score 20 - 0.

Trinity returned to the attack, but a loose pass inside the Quins 22 was intercepted by Johnny Lowe who zoomed off to score at the other end. The conversion  took the score to 27 - 0.

The 4th try and the bonus point came through a powerful forward drive from the Quins pack, with Andy Ward getting the touch down. 34 - 0

Trinity had not given up however, and  from a quick penaly, they crashed over our line. The try was converted by their effervescent out-half Johnny Watt (son of our Alison) to make the score 34 - 7.
However, Andy obviously liked the adulation he had received  from his team, after his first try, because shortly afterwards he scored a second - this one individually more exciting as he galloped over the line unopposed. 41-7

With 10 minutes left, Quins brought on Norpera Stewart, Mike McKeever, William Tang
,  and  Graham Jewhurst. With the final movement of the match Trinity scored a second try in the corner. With Johnny Watt's conversion  the final score was 41 - 14.

An excellent match, with Trinity playing their part through their attacking game. While it would be difficult to single out any one of our backs to-day, the supporters' return train journey  to Belfast concluded, entirely soberly (I think), that Mike Glancy's overall game deserved a Man of the Match award.Well done Mikey!
