Young Munster v Belfast Harlequins
Division II Play-off (2v3)

Tom Clifford Park
12 April 2008

Quins elected to play South against a stiff breeze and to the Clubhouse of Young Munster who kicked off. Let not my cold words accuse my zeal for our lambs were rendered silent in the 1st half, as Young Munster ran in fourtries at 22, 27, 35 and 40 by respectively Connolly, Corcoran, Carey and Murray, the latter converting the first three, having kicked two penalties at 4 and 13. Quins' sole response was a penalty by Slabbert at 30, so by halftime we were well slaughtered: Young Munster 32  Quins  3.
Clearly the 2nd quarter was our undoing and indeed the meagre return of 3 points after attacks by both our backs and our scrum, was disappointing.
In the 2nd half at 48, 57 and 80, three brilliant tries were run in from the halfway by McLoughlin, Heatlie and McComb. Slabbert converted Heatlie's and in true Leopardstown Seven-a-side fashion McComb drop-kicked his own conversion.
'However in the meantime at 64 and 69, YM had scored two unconverted tries by Corcoran and Connolly to leave thefinal score at: YM  42  Quins  22.
In the 2nd half and by arrangement with DC Gillespie, all five subs came on: Stephen Robinson for Johnston, Robert Logan for Philpott, Graham Jewhurst for Rourke, Andrew McKeen for Atky (with Atky going to the centre for Stewart)   and Freddie Cuttle for Creighton. We just did not have a sixth or seventh sub.
Paul Haycock (Leinster) refereed the game well. The loss of six normally 1st XV players through injury or other unavailability, proved insurmountable in our heaviest
defeat of the season, but losing by six tries to three was no disgrace - as I am sure the Chairman Ian McEvoy and our Acting Team Manager and Chairman of Selectors  Stephen Blake Knox would agree.
We must regroup for our final match of the season: the Ulster Senior Cup Final v Ballymena at a venue and on a date to bedetermined.
See you in due course.
Quins started with: 11 Willem Slabbert 15 Paul McKenzie 13 Thomas Horner
12 Shane Stewart 14 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Craig Voisey 2 Stuart Philpott  Alan Rankin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Colin Atkinson (c) 7 David Johnston 8 Alister Heatlie

PS Our thanks to Peter Bates from the 9 other supporters: Ronnie, Hilary,Norman, Judith, Tony, Carmel, Mike, Eithne and myself, for an excellent stay and Saturday dinner in Pery's Best Western and to Young Munster for impeccable hospitality before and after the match.
PS2 My man of the match was Gavin McLoughlin for that first absolutely outstanding try.

Belfast Harlequins 38
Barnhall 3
AIB AIL II, Deramore Park
 29th March 2008

Quins elected to attack the scoreboard.Barnhall kicked off. Between 1 and 2 pm, the strong gusting wind had rotated pi/2 radians from Easterly to Southerly (a prematch turnover). At 2 minutes Barnhall's Kavanagh kicked a penalty to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead. However at 21, McComb scored a good try converted by Cave to leave the halftime score at:  Quins  7  Barnhall  3.
At halftime Solly isued a number of instructions, the rain stopped and appropriately Quins ran in at pace five more tries at 46, 48, 53, 62 and 72 by respectively:
Stewart, Creighton, Gillespie, McKenzie and Atkinson, three ofwhich were converted by Cave (Slabbert not starting due to illness).

The final score was thus: Quins  38 Barnhall 3, which gave Quins 5 League points( for the 2nd time thisseason). Commiserations to Barnhall who had 3 big forwards off injured and are relegated to Division III with Suttonians.
Despite Quins finishing on 151 points differential, 8 ahead of Young Munster, the latter pipped us by one League point (52 to 51) for the 2nd promotion place. In the top-4 play-offs we are accordingly away in Rosbrien in one of the two semi finals. In turn Buccaneers (53)are promoted and at home to UCC(50) in the other semifinal, having scored 4 tries against Dublin University. In the 2nd half,Keith Pyper, Alister Heatlie, Robert Logan,Thomas Horner and Alan Rankin subbed on for Stewart, Rourke, Philpott, Cave and Voisey/Blake Knox (with Atky going to centre and Pyper to outhalf).
Ger English (Munster) refereed the game very well.
A J and J award for man-of-the-season went appropriately to Colin Atkinson, the team captain. Modesty forbids my reporting the surprising award of a 2nd magnum. Nevertheless many thanks to Judith and Norman. Later some attended the annual dinner dance at Best Western Wellington Park Hotel :many thanks to Emma Bester and Wes Kettyle for organising the event.
Commiserations to our entire management and playing teams, especially to our President Ronnie Gregg and his charming partner Hilary McLean whose work and commitment over two years were faultless.
It is not clear when the Senior Cup Semi final will be played :at any rate two Semi-finals to go!
C'est la vie :another season in Division II: it was a tight finish!
Quins started with:15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb
6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.

PS At the moment it looks like one game in Limerick and two each in Dublin and Cork next season.

Belfast Harlequins 14
Suttonians 6

AIB AIL II,Deramore Park

22nd March 2008

Quins elected to attack Deramore Pk South with the Northerly wind blowing transversely across the pitch, right to left. Taipai had the visitors in front :Quins 0 Suttonians 3 with a simple penalty at 6. At 15 Heatlie scored an excellent try from a mauled lineout, with Slabbert converting: Quins 7 Suttonians 3. Suttonians had a heavy pack, including 2 tall locks, one at 6' 9''. They gained a number of turnovers , wheeling the scrum through pi/2 radians .No further score accrued before 1/2 time.
At 42 Slabbert scored a try coming off his wing to attack off a rucked ball and touching down to the left of the uprights at the Clubhouse end.He converted to make the score Quins 14 Suttonians 3.
The strong Sun and the now cold biting North-Westerly wind now favoured Quins (even my tracksuit and anorak were thwarted). For Suttonians Taipai kicked his 2nd penalty to leave the score at: Quins 14 Suttonians 6. With the last kick of the game, Suttonians hooked a penalty to the left of the left upright,as had Quins in the 1st half neither kicker allowing sufficiently for the strong cross wind or component thereof.
Quins had three yellow cards to Suttonians' one, all seemingly for forwards not releasing.
Final score, Quins 14 (Slabbert 1T, 2C; Heatlie 1T) - Suttonians 6

So four points to Quins and no consoling loser's bonus for Suttonians.
Further Quins' tries proved elusive. In the circumstances J and J decided they would postpone their award(s) to the Barnhall match next week. So see you at Deramore Park on the 29th March.

Young Munster are 1st on 48 ( 139), Buccaneers are 2nd on 48{ 120), Quins are 3rd on 46 ( 116) and UCC 4th on 46 ( 94). Respectively they play Old Crescent(A), Dublin University(H), Barnhall(H) and Thomond(A). (Barnhall are 16th and Old Crescent 14th   -  Suttonians 15th).

Rory Blake Knox subbed on for Pyper, Stuart Philpott for Logan and Alan Rankin (temporarily) for Voisey.

Quins started with: 15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Keith Pyper 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie .

Belfast Harlequins 19
Malone 13
AIL2, Deramore Park
Saturday 1st March 2008

Quins elected to attack the Malone Road end and face the strongly gusting Westerly winds. Malone kicked off.
During the week a 5.2 earthquake (on the Richter scale) tremor was felt even in Co. Down, its epicentre having been in Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. It would appear that it persisted longer than originally thought! In this physical encounter, Quins' staying power and stamina eventually outswayed the heavy Malone pack, in the last quarter. The South Belfast pale-blue wheelie bins survived the storm while the red-sox of East Belfast found themselves thwarted. Both sides were to find the strong wind difficult to gauge with many kicks going straight out on the full. The halftime score was to be: Quins 3 Malone 6, a penalty by Slabbert at 6, doubled by Hallett at 28 and 40. Quins had played well against the wind and were happy enough.

In the 2nd half at 41,Pyper put up a high Garryowen and Stewart, following up at pace, tackled their fullback in
possession. Malone were penalised for not playing the ball and Slabbert duly converted: Quins 6 Malone 6.
At 54 Quins exerted Eton wall game pressure in the Clubhouse corner; following a tackle on a Malone defender in-goal and a series of phases of rucks and mauls, initiating from a Quins' 5m scrum, Atkinson scored an important try:
Quins 11 Malone 6.
The conversion was null and void, the ball having fallen off the tee in the strong wind.Game on!
At 58 it appeared that Malone's left wing Baird had scored a try, just to the right of the posts, following a Quins' knock-on and determined Malone running and passing. However following consultation with both touch judges, the
referee, David Keane(Leinster) awarded Malone a penalty try, presumably for obstruction. It was duly converted by Hallett: Quins 11 Malone 13.
Malone having introduced a number of subs, Quins brought on Stephen Robinson, Rory Blake Knox and Roger Kirkwood, for the last quarter, for Heatlie,Pyper and Creighton. This was to prove impacting and inspirational, as at 75, Quins regained  the lead with a try to the right of the posts at the Clubhouse end, by Slabbert who missed the conversion. This all came from a Malone scrum turned over: from the Quins' scrum Blake Knox chipped and followed up at pace, to win the loose ball and slip a delighful pass to Slabbert: Quins 16 Malone 13.
At 80, following a turnover through a great take in the lineout by McComb, and Malone infringing at the ensuing ruck, Slabbert kicked a penalty, 35 to 40 m out, to leave the final score: Quins 19 Malone 13.
Thus 4 League points to Quins who retain 2nd place on 42 League points, 2 behind the new leaders Buccaneers, and a loser's bonus point to Malone in 3rd place with 41 League points.
Malone and Quins are both at home on the 22nd March to Buccaneers and Suttonians respectively. The postponed match between UCC and Young Munster is scheduled for 16th.

The J&J man-of-the-match award went to Shane Stewart for his excellent and determined play on the day and over the last number of months.

See you on the 15th at Deramore for our Senior Cup match versus Ards.

Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Keith Pyper
9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.

Highfield 13

Belfast Harlequins  21

AIB AIL2

Woodleigh Park, Cork
Saturday 16th February 2008

Highfield elected to play down the top-class pitch, North to South. It was a cold but dry occasion. Proceedings were dominated by a persistently strong breeze, East to West, that is, transverse across the pitch from the Easterly Clubhouse.
Quins kicked off and the 1st half was to be nip & tuck. However at 30, Kettyle shrugged off a tackle and put McKenzie away for a superb try, McKenzie checking O'Brien their fullback by slowing, showing the ball inside to Kettyle and then fairly accelerating round and outside O'Brien. Slabbert converted.

So with O'Meara the Highfield scrum-half having kicked a penalty at 9 , the halftime score was: Highfield 3 Quins 7 - which was highly satisfactory, Quins having played up the slope in this first 40.
At halftime H'field went to the changing rooms and re-emerged to thunderous applause. H'field kicked off and a number of errors by cold Quins' players , at 42, resulted in a driving maul/ruck try for the home-team's no. 8 Bradley-Harris, converted by O'Meara: H'field 10 Quins 7.
The lead was extended by 3 with another O'Meara penalty at 51. However as the game wore on into the last quarter the Quins pack started to rumble, with quite a number of H'field's front 5 left prostrate on the ground.

Quins' backs were starting to take advantage of the down- hill in attack. One such passing movement going right through a number of hands, finished with Kettyle putting Philpott in, at 76, for a try with an inside pass at the right-hand corner flag. Slabbert converted: Highfield 13 Quins 14.

At 80, a driven rolling maul started on the H'field 22, put Gillespie in for a very good try, converted by Slabbert: Highfield 13 Quins 21.

So 4 League points to Quins and no consolation for H'field, who had topped the AIL II table earlier that day. H'field were magnanimous in defeat. Malone having beaten Barnhall handsomely with a bonus-point win, now top the table with 40 pts .Quins are 2nd with 38, H'field 3rd with 37 and Young Munster 4th on 37 points. . On 35 are UCC and Bucanerrs  places each in 5th & 6th , the last 3 having a game in hand.
So Malone at home on 1st March is something of a cup-final for us the prize being promotion, with Suttonians and Barnhall on the 22nd & 29th March at home.

During the week you may have noticed the harlequin beetle, a ladybird or as the French call it,une cochinelle, emerged appropriately as the ultimate forager, eating lesser beetles in its way. So one more forage,by the South Belfast pale-blue wheelie- bin cochinelles, against the Red-Sox (and their tie-ups)of Malone, and Harlequins will be in command.

Incidentally Rory Blake Knox and Stephen Robinson subbed on for Keith Pyper and Alister Heatlie, Quins having started as:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Keith Pyper 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.

The J & J man-of-the-match award went to Mark Kettyle for his contributions to the 1st 2 tries.

A number of our players did have problems with the cross wind, when it came to punting. Other players who impressed were Andy Ward, Colin Atkinson, Willem Slabbert, Shane Stewart and Neil McComb - but this was a team performance which reflected Thursday night's concentrated and productive team-training session. It was good to have Stuart Philpott and Paul McKenzie back from respectively marriage (congratulations) and Ulster A.

Also a special mention must go to Alan Solomons who, with Wardy and Maurice, has put a lot of effort into getting the team to its current progressive development. We have a bye in the Senior Cup and hence a week off (only for supporters!). Let's look forward to entertaining Malone in a fortnight's time.

PS One little philosophical reflection:it is probably better to concede a turnover rather than a penalty, as on Saturday!

Belfast Harlequins 22
De La Salle Palmerston 17

AIB AIL II, Deramore Park
9 February 2008

DLSP elected to defend the Atlantic Ocean end. Quins kicked off into the diagonal Sunlight and a very light breeze. By 1/2-time Quins 9 DLSP 3 reflected the run of play Slabbert having kicked 3 penalties at 3,19 and 31 to one by DLSP at 7. However only 2 minutes into the 2nd half, a mis-hit fly-hack gifted a converted try to the opposition : Quins 9 DLSP 10.

Five minutes later, a turnover at a Quins' maul/ruck breakdown allowed DLSP to pass down the line for their right winger to cross in the corner and race round behind the posts for another easily converted try: Quins 9 DLSP 17.

However when the going gets tough the tough get going and a series of rucks and mauls had Conlon scoring a try at 57, converted by Slabbert: Quins 16 DLSP 17. During this period DLSP's tight-head was yellowcarded as had Quins' loosehead in the 1st half, Alan Rankin subbing on solidly for the scrummage requirement.

At 72 and 79 Slabbert secured the J and J man-of-the-match award ,for the second time this season, kicking two (winning) penalties:

Quins 22 DLSP 17. (Conlon(1 T) Slabbert(5P,1 C))

The AIL II table now reads:

1 Highfield 37 ( 76)
2 Malone 35 ( 60)
3 Quins 34 ( 96)
4 UCC 34 ( 64),
the points differential in brackets, being in our favour and Malone having picked up a bonus point v Dublin University (4 tries).Young Munster are 5th with 32, Bective 6th with 31,Buccaneers 7th with 30 and DLSP 8th with 28. - where the 4th, 5th, 7th,and 8th teams eachhave a game in hand..

A number of players had good games; our rucking and mauling was, in general, good as was our tackling. However two missed tries in the 1st half going left, due to indifferent handling and two conceded tries could have been costly.

In the 2nd half Keith Pyper subbed for Rory Blake Knox and Stuart Philpott for Logan,

Quins having started with:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Thomas Horner 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson.

Next week's match against Highfield will be a major and telling contest,as will Malone at home on 1st March.

All to play for: see you in Cork at Woodleigh Park, Model Farm Road on the 16th.

Thomond 16
Quins 18

AIL2, Liam Fitzgerald Park
Saturday 26th January 2008

Quins elected to defend East Limerick playing into a strong Westerly wind. The pitch was muddy but the rain kept away if not the seagulls. Thomond kicked off, but to the dead ball-line - scrum back. Unsurprisingly this was to be a ding-dong battle royal of multiple-phase ruck and maul, interspersed with strategic punting and chipping.
Thomond were 13-0 up at halftime (following the previous victory at home over Young Munster), and as a result of  penalties at 7 and 30 interspersed with a converted try at 17.
In the second half, after 45, the Thomond 6 was yellow-carded. At 49, Slabbert scored an excellent try: game on. At 62, Stewart scored a second excellent try under the posts, Slabbert converting.
At 65 Slabbert kicked the first of two well-struck penalties; at 67, Quins having failed to catch the restart,  the Thomond outhalf kicked a penalty for hands in the ruck: Thomond 16 Quins 15.
On 70, Thomond were penalised for barging in the lineout and Slabbert kicked the second of his two  penalties-  giving Quins a deserved winning lead of: Thomond  16  Quins  18, Thomond thus secured a loser's bonus point.
However four points were enough to keep Quins in 4th place, two points behind Highfield and Young Munster.
The J&J man-of-the-match selected by our President Ronnie Gregg went to Andrew Gillespie for his excellent pick,  go,  and ruck tactics without losing possession.
Quins did not use any of their five subs:16 Stephen Robinson 17 Stephen Beattie 18 Brian Howard 19 Roger Kirkwood 20 Thomas Horner,
having started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Darren Cave
12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
One or two players thought we were going to Leopardstown judging by their attire at training. A good team song rendition fairly echoed in  the Quins' changing room after the game. The discipline was exemplary as was the team performance. Rucking,  passing and kicking were sharper - in trying conditions. The odd scrum and the odd lineout were less than perfect but this was a great win, in the circumstances.
I particularly liked Creighton's precision and Voisey's continual backing-up. Well done team! See you on the 9th February at Deramore for the DLSP match:
all to play  for.

Bective Rangers 9
Quins 7
AIL2, Donnybrook
Saturday 19th January 2008

With Old Wesley Clubhouse at the South-East end and Bective Rangers at the North-West,Quins elected to attack Old Wesley, at Donnybrook. Bective kicked off with a strong Southerly wind and in rain which gained momentum as the game wore on.
Despite the wind, Quins had most of the play and territory in the 1st half, but had only one excellent try by McKenzie at 19, converted by Slabbert, to show for their efforts, so that the half-time score was: Bective 0 Quins 7. The penalty count was 5-1 in favour of Quins in the 1st half, including a couple that were kickable.
In the 2nd half it was 7 penalties to nil in favour of Bective, who in their three colours of green, red and white fairly ranged in three converted penalties, the last being 5 minutes into time added on, such were the number of stoppages.
All three were kicked from the same spot, near the Quins' 22, halfway out, to the left of the posts and straight into the wind at 58, 65 and 85.
Hence the final score was:           Bective  9  Quins  7.
The loser's bonus point leaves Quins in 4th place on 26 points, 6 behind UCC, 2 behind Highfield who beat UCC and 1 behind Young Munster (who play Thomond away on Sunday), and ahead of Malone on points differential, with Bective hot on both our tails on 25.
This must be classed as a missed opportunity, in that a bare win would have taken us into 2nd place, 3 points behind UCC. We must now win all of our last six games: 2 away, 4 at home.
There can be few complaints re our scrums and lineouts; however the unfavourable penalty count was mostly due to our indiscipline at the maul/ruck breakdown. Moreover, too many punts were charged down or misguided, and too many passes went astray.
No J & J man-of-the-match accrued, although I did think Kettyle's catching of the high ball was exemplary. Their 9 and 11 both countered well off our more speculative kicks. Each side received a yellow card.
In the 2nd half David Creighton and Stephen Robinson subbed on for Kirkwood and Heatlie respectively, Quins having started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Paul McKenzie 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Keith Pyper 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Subs not used were Alan Rankin, Robert Logan and Rory Blake Knox.
See you at Liam Fitzgerald Park , Limerick, next Saturday for the match against Thomond.

 Quins v Old Crescent

AIL2, Deramore

Saturday 12th January 2008

Old Crescent elected to attack the river Lagan.Quins kicked off.Conditions were well nigh perfect, the early morning frost having cleared.
The halftime score was Quins 20  Crescent  0, thanks to tries by Slabbert at 8 and McKenzie at 16, reinforced by two Slabbert penalties at 28 and 37 , the latter being a cannon off the upright (cf billiards).
Re Bertie's photo and comment, McKenzie literally picked the ball off his toes, mms above ground.
In the second half five tries were added by Philpott, McComb, Cave, Conlon and Rory Blake Knox (subbing on for Pyper) at 51,64,69,77 and 81.
Slabbert converted all 7 except Conlon's, making the final score:
Quins 53  Crescent  0, thus ensuring five points for a bonus-point victory, Quins
having scored three more tries than the necessary four.
Significantly we are back up to third position in the League Table, two League points behind second-placed Young Munster and with the best points differential :  ( 89) , in the entire table.
The J& J Man of The match award went to Neil McComb, for excellent lineout play, taking a number of opposition throws, his terrific backing-up for the fourth bonus-point securing try and his general endeavour. This was a consensual decision.
But essentially this was a magnificent enhanced team performance including great tackling all round.
See you in Donnybrook for the Bective game next Saturday.
Commiserations to Old Crescent who stayed in Best Western Wellington Park the night before and our thanks to John Carvill (Leinster referee).
Our good wishes to Gareth Rourke and Chris McCarey for speedy recoveries from their injuries.

Quins started with:

Ballynahinch v Quins

AIB AIL League II

Ballymacaran Park

5 Jan '08

The above match had been postponed from 12th December '07, due to a waterlogged pitch.'Hinch elected to defend the Clubhouse and play into the moderate Southerly breeze and Sun.

Quins kicked off, in excellent conditions. By halftime, Quins led 9-0 thanks to consummate penalty-goal kicking by Slabbert at 9, 25 and 36. This two-score lead might have been reduced to one, had the Hinch fullback not hooked his kick from the Quins 22m straight in front of the posts, on the stroke of halftime: a let-off if ever there was one ! !

In the 2nd half Hinch renewed their multiple-phase maul/ruck game and scored a pushover try at 61, Quins having failed to clear their lines. Almost immediately Slabbert kicked his fourth penalty: Hinch 5 Quins 12.

It was not until Stewart scored an opportunist try at 73, that the match was won . David Creighton, who had subbed on for Kirkwood, had chipped into the right-hand corner. Stewart charged down the attempted clearance, and Cave following up at pace,  gathered, broke away, and put the supporting Stewart in for a try, with a delicate sleight of hand. : Hinch 5 Quins 17.

Other subs in the 2nd half were Alasdair Heatlie and Stuart Philpott for Johnston and Logan. The two other subs, Alan Rankin and Rory Blake Knox, were not used.

Having dug my car out of 9 inches (sorry, 23 cms approx.) of snow on Friday morning on my South Belfast driveway between 10-30am and 11am, it was amazing to find the Hinch snow-free on the Saturday. No Translink buses were operating in Belfast throughout Friday.

Many thanks to Hinch both for an excellent most welcome lunch and their hospitality in general. Thank you !

Quins now lie 5th again, one point behind DLSP and Malone, and ahead of Highfield and Buccaneers on points differential after seven complete rounds.

The J & J man of the match award went to Andy Ward for his excellent leadership and play against his old Club.

McComb, Stewart and Voisey were to the fore. Once again the entire- team's tackling was first class and welcome back to the team captain Atky, after injury.

Five home and three away games remain in AIL II for Quins  in 2008 - thanks to the redevelopment of  Lansdowne and Thomond Parks:---- Old Crescent (H; 12 Jan), Bective(A: 19 Jan),Thomond (A: 26 Jan), DLSP (H: 9 Feb), Highfield (A:16 Feb), Malone (H: 1 Mar), Suttonians (H: 22 Mar) and Barnhall (H:2 9 Mar), who lie, respectively, in 16th, 10th, 15th, 3rd, 6th, 4th, 13th and 9th positions in AIL II.

See you next Saturday at Deramore Park for the first of these.

Quins started with: 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Colin Atkinson(C) 7 David Johnston 8 Andrew Ward 9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Keith Pyper 11 Willem Slabbert 12 Shane Stewart 13 Darren Cave 14 Paul McKenzie 15 Mark Kettyle.

 Buccaneers RFC v Quins
AIL2, Dubarry Park, Athlone
15th December 2007

Quins elected to face the modest breeze and attack the Clubhouse end. Buccs kicked off.

After 5 mins Gaughan (R Wing) scored an unconverted try. Quins replied with penalties at 16 and 29. At 36 and after a driving maul Marshall scored an outstanding try on the right. Slabbert converted well.
So at half-time: Bucaneers 5 Quins 13.
From the kick-off for the 2nd half, McComb caught the ball on the full and drove deep into the Buccs 22. Slabbert kicked an important penalty, for the Buccs offside: 5-16. Buccs kicked a simple penalty at 61.Quins' fate (a loser's bonus point) was sealed by two late Buccs tries at 74 and 79: Bucanneers 18 Quins 16.

Our President Ronnie Gregg and photographer Bertie O'Neill agreed that no man of the match J&J award be made.

How did we manage to lose this vital match?

I can only suggest the long drive to Athlone, the lack of match practice the previous Saturday and injuries. Certainly

Conlon, Pyper and Slabbert had to be replaced by Stephen Beattie, Rory Blake Knox and David Creighton. Gareth Rourke and Robert Logan were not used. Scrums were good including two wheeled turnovers, lineouts (2,4,6) were good, rucks and mauls were good. In general tackling was good - though every time Buccs went left in attack in the 2nd half, they appeared to have an extra man and looked dangerous? Both late tries were scored in their L-hand (our R-hand) corner. Although Slabbert kicked 3 penalties and 1 conversion, in general kicking of all types was not good.

UCC appear impregnable at the top of the table but 2nd place may yet be interesting. Cave nearly got in at the end!

Quins started with: 15 Willem Slabbert 14 Chris Quinn 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Keith Pyper 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb

 Quins v Young Munster
AIL II,Deramore Park
1st December 2007

Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse end and Young Munster kicked off, with a strong Westerly wind - which was to veer North-West, and in the 2nd half South-West.
Willem Slabbert  (who won the J&J man-of-the-match Award), kicked four penalties - at 9,13, 37 and 79. Young Munster replied with two from Wells at 16 and 32 and two from Connolly at 43 and 62, so that the half-time score was 9-9 and the final score was  Quins  12  Young Munster  12.
This results in two League points each:Young Munster stay top on points differential over UCC, while Quins slip back to seventh.5 points back.
Quins started with:
15 Willem Slabbert 14 Chris Quinn 13 Darren Cave12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Aaron Deverall 9 Paul Marshall
1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey  4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Fairly late in the 2nd half, Stephen Robinson, Keith Pyper and David Creighton subbed on for Rourke,Deverall and Marshall.Other available subs were Alan Rankin (p) and Robert Logan (h).
On the Fiday night at 10pm Quins were informed by the Ulster Branch that they could not play Niall O'Connor - even though he had not even sat on the Ulster bench that evening, in the game versus Edinburgh.
Lineouts were good, especially in the poor conditions:Rourke at 2, McComb at 4 and Ward at 6 ( McCarey having been injured in the Dungannon game the previous week).
Tackling was good. Scrums , after a good start, became a little ragged. Both sides rucked and mauled effectively. Neither side looked like scoring a try.
For Quins, there was a lack of considered variation or coordinated strategy  in the link between pack and outfield.
Andy Ward accepted a further bottle of champagne on behalf of our hard-worked physio Gary O'Callaghan, such has beenthe number of recent injuries.
See you Ballymacarn Park, Ballynahinch, next Saturday in yet
another vital AIL II match.

Clonnakilty -v- Quins AIL 2
Shannonvale Cross
Saturday 17th  November 2007

Quins elected to defend the Irish Sea ( the East) and attack further -West Cork.  There  was incessant rain resulting in memorable down-town flooding, prohibiting pedestrians.

Clon kicked off with the strong Westerly wind which was to veer South-Westerly and by  the second  half , Southerly. (Quins were to benefit from only a transverse component which favoured kicking penalties across to the far left touchline)

Clon kicked off.Quins attacked from the off, but could not break down Clon's defence.
On 16 Lombard kicked a penalty. Worse was to follow when on 33 centre Dillon intercepted in his own half to score. His try was converted by Lombard.
Fortunately on the stroke of half-time (40), Ward scored a great rolling-maul try for Quins so that  the score  was Clon   10   Quins   5  at  half-time.

In the 2nd half and despite uncontested scrums ( previously dominated by Quins) and the unfortunate yellow-carding of Philpott by Leinster referee (Paul Haycock), Slabbert kicked a penalty at 57 and Stewart  got in for a rolling-maul try, converted by Slabbert, to leave the final score at :  Clon  10    Quins 15

Thus Quins claimed four valuable points to move into 4th position in AIL 2 league, with Clon securing a loser's bonus point.

In the 2nd half Andrew Gillespie temped for Atkinson ( blood injury) and then subbed for Conlon.
This was a very valuable win in atrocious conditions.
A special mention fro Maurice Field who "warmed" the team up and for our videographer Rodney Mairs who managed to keep his lenses dry.
Johnstons'  Man of the match went to Craig Voisey for his general robust , energetic and mobile tight-head play.
This was  a cross-gender decision by Ronnie Gregg ( President), Emma Bester ( nee Mairs:photographer) and myself.
Thirteen  points  from a maximun of twenty is 65%( IIi). A win against Young Munster at Deramore on the 1st December will merit the coveted  I ( 70% ), assuming 4 tries.

It must be said that our p's and c's were well justified this week: "patience, persistence and perseverance" up front in both attack and defence and " coherence, composure, cohesion and concentration" in the backs (apart from that unfortunate interept try )

See you in Dungannon next week for a vital Ulster League match.

Quins started with:
15 Willem Slabbert 14  Mark Kettyle 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Aaron Deverall  9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott  3 Craig Voisey 4 Graham Jewhurst 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson (c) 8 Chris McCarey

Quins -v- UCC
AIL 2
Deramore Park
Saturday 10th  November 2007

UCC elected to attack the Malone Road;Quins kicked off, with a strong North-Westerly wind, in our first home game of the  AIL II season.
Horner kicked two penalties (3, 8)and Referee Mr Dermot Moloney  awarded Quins a penalty try (40), converted by Horner, one minute before the break.
Dunne had kicked a penalty (18) so the half-time score was Quins  13  UCC  3.

In the second half Quins did not trouble the scoreboard but UCC scored two rolling-maul tries ( 59, 84), both converted by Dunne who also had kicked a penalty (48). The winning goal  was the last event of a match, disappointing from a Quins' perspective.

The final score:Quins  13  UCC  20 did at least afford Quins a loser's' bonus point.
The consensus was that Quins did not deserve to win; equally they did not deserve to lose  -  13 points each might have been a more balanced result.
The penalty count was 12-8 in favour of UCC, whose pack showed more  patience and perseverance in the Eton wall game of multiple phases of rucks and mauls.
Our back-line, to a man, showed , in alphabetical order,  a lack of cohesion, composure and concentration.
In the second half Shane Stewart and David Johnston subbed on for Rea and Gillespie.
Willem Slabbert,Colin Atkinson and Graham Jewhurst were all missing due to injury.
For his excellent lineout jumping, Norman Johnston, Bertie O'Neill and I nominated Chris McCarey as the Quins Man of The Match, taking into account his consistent performance over the first three AIL matches.
Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Simon Rea 13 Darren Cave 12 Thomas Horner 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Keith Pyper  9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott  3 Craig Voisey 4 Stephen Robinson 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey

AIL II , 3rd November,2007
College Park,Dublin.

Quins elected to defend the Physics Department and Samy Nasr Institute end.  (otherwise known to some as the Westland Row, Pearse Station end)

Dublin kicked off.

At 28, 63 and 78 Darren Cave completed his third hat-trick of the season and appropriately secured the Johnstons' man-of-the-match award, notably for his third try which secured the victory and denied Dublin a bonus point. All 3 involved good backing up of well constructed back moves, but the last involved the beating of two men on the outside and one on the inside:a bit like Diana Ross' famous song: "you turn me inside out, upside down.".
Dublin's left wing scored a good try at 21, while O'Connor (11) and Dublin's No. 10,Johnny Watt,( 31) exchanged successful penalties.  So that the halftime score was: Dublin  10  Quins  8, (Watt having converted Dublin's try).
Of course, Quins had played up-hill in the first half.
Apart from the Derrick Crane on Nassau Street, this was a picturesque setting on a beautiful late-Autumn afternoon. Marshall  had started off with an electric break up the right wing. McComb nearly got in at the left-hand corner.
It has to be said Dublin had a young strong pack which rucked well.
Only in the second half did we really get our driving maul going:very effective against tiring students.
In the second half Keith Pyper, Stuart Philpott and Andrew Gillespie subbed on for Stewart, Logan and Atkinson.
Moreover O'Connor converted our 2nd and 3rd tries.
Trevor Collins(Munster) refereed the match efficiently.
As is now expected,Ward and McCarey had skilful energetic games.
But this was a good team performance. We are now third in the Division II table after two away wins, closely behind Highfield and Young Munster.
Well done,men, team,coaches, managers,e tc.
Here Alan Solomons deserves a special mention.
So the final score was: Dublin  10  Quins  22.
Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Willem Slabbert 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan

 AIL 2007 - 2008

Week 1

Wanderers vs Belfast Harlequins

                 Wanderers v Quins
                All Ireland League II
                  27 October 2007
                   Merrion Road

Wanderers elected to play towards the black North, with the Sun and strong breeze behind them. Quins kicked off. Cave scored an early try (5) following the charging down of a Wanderers' punt. O'Connor converted. At 37 Fitzgerald atoned for two earlier misses and kicked a penalty, leaving the halftime score at
Wanderers  3  Quins 7.
At 55, O'Connor was unfortunate to be yellow carded for offside and Fitzgerald kicked his 2nd penalty, O'Connor having previously kicked a penalty for Quins at 42: Wanderers  6  Quins 10.
At 60 Slabbert hit a penalty from halfway: Wanderers  6  Quins 13.

THE turning point came eight minutes later (68) when, following a concerted Quins attack, Conlon scored a great try, shaking off two would-be tacklers with his powerful surge:   Wanderers  9  Quins  18,
Fitzgerald having landed his third penalty at 63. As is his right by law, Mr Peter Roche, the Munster referee, overruled the conversion of Conlon's try. Quins were, however, two scores ahead.
Wanderers throwing caution to the wind, attacked the Quins 22, far right, incessantly with a series of rucks and mauls (Eton wall game?), only for Quins to intercept and McKenzie sprint the length of the pitch to score under the posts,
O'Connor converting to leave the no-side victory at
                  Wanderers  9  Quins  25.
Regrettably there was no time to chase the fourth try and a bonus point. Still, four League points to none was an excellent outcome from our first outing in AIL II and an away one at that.
This was a very encouraging team/squad performance against last year's Division III Champions, a side which will trouble most other division 2 sides this season.
The entire back row of Atkinson, McCarey and Ward were outstanding in all phases of play. Slabbert's penalty and punting in general and Conlon's try were significant, as was Creighton's box kicking.
However our Honorary Secretary requires a man-of-the-match and following discussions with Norman Johnston (sic)and Bertie O'Neill, photographer and trustee, I nominate Paul McKenzie for his 80 minutes' contribution: first 40 mins
of tremendous defensive catching often at high pace and his punting and countering, under continual pressure from bombardment by Fitzgerald and Hunt, and then the sprint for the third and final try, over 80 metres.

Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Willem Slabbert 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Niall O'Connor 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott
3 Craig Voisey 4 Graham Jewhurst 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey
Andrew Gillespie subbed on for the injured Jewhurst late on. Other subs were Robert Logan, Conor Keown, Roger Kirkwood and Keith Pyper.

See you at College Park next Saturday for our second AIL II match, against Dublin University, better known as Trinity College Dublin.

All Ireland Cup

Round 2
Quins v Shannon

Deramore Park, Saturday 13th October 2007

Quins chose to attack the Black Mountain end.
Shannon kicked off.
Suffice it to say,  Shannon were very strong in the 1st half and built up a sixteen-point lead. A pushover try (at 9) was converted by Thompson, who added 3 penalties at 5, 13 and 20 mins. At 38 mins Slabbert kicked a penalty in reply to leave the halftime score at   Quins  3  Shannon  16.
Lack of composure in handling had denied us two try-scoring opportunities.
In the 2nd half Quins showed more determination and many Shannon players went down injured. For persistent infringement, Sean Cronin and Andrew Finn were yellow-carded.
Cave went round his man and came under the posts for his first try at 60. This was followed at 76 when Shannon dropped the ball in their own 22. Cave fly-hacked through and beat his opponent - diving on the ball under the posts. Slabbert converted both.
So, with just 3 minutes to play (plus time to be added on) we were ahead for the first and only occasion,  Quins  17  Shannon  16.
Unfortunately Quins did not deal with Shannon's restart kick. A ruck on Quins' 22 resulted in an offside decision and Thompson kicked the winning points:
Quins  17  Shannon  19   ----   C'est la vie!
I was impressed with Wardy's left-hand touch kicking in the
2nd half!

Derry in the Ulster League next Saturday at home, then Wanderers at Merrion Road, Dublin, in our first AIL II match of the season. Our performance to date augurs well. Just two minor suggestions  -  take and give earlier rather than
later (to negate the drift defence) ; grabbing and binding a partner at the back of the ruck before driving is less likely to lead to a penalty.
At the end of the day Shannon knew they had been in a tough hard match.

Quins started with:
15 Willem Slabbert 14 Mark Kettyle 13 Darren Cave12 Shane Stewart 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Thomas Horner 9 Karl Trask 8 Chris McCarey(C) 7 Andrew Gillespie 6 Andrew Ward 5 Neil McComb 4 Graham Jewhurst 3 Chris Voisey 2 Stuart Philpott 1 Niall Conlon
Robert Logan, Stephen Robinson and Keith Pyper had subbed on for Philpott, Jewhurst and Horner, in the second half .

Our fist defeat:    -------  never mind:, promotion is more important!

Thomond
v
Quins

Round I AI Cup

Liam Fitzgerald Park, Limerick

6th October 2007

Thomond chose to defend the terraced row of houses at the Clubhouse end, playing East to West. Quins kicked off.

Quins scored five tries: Kettyle(10), McKenzie(41), Conlon(50) and Trask (62,73).Slabbert converted one and at 3 kicked an early penalty, while Horner converted two.

The halftime score was hence only: Quins 13 Thomond 0.

In the 2nd half Quins were more dominant and but for a strong Westerly Sun would have won more handsomely. Indeed had some sixteen points not been passed up the final score might have been 50-0. As it turned out the final score was Quins 34 Thomond 7,

The ^Thomond score came when their right wing chipped over the defence and won the chase to the line.

In the 2nd half Simon Rea, Stephen Robinson and Robert Logan subbed for McKenzie,Rourke and Philpott, Thomond using their full complement of subs.

At 65 a spell of fisticuffs resulted in the referee, Mr Dudley Phillips, yellow carding one from each side. At 72 a

red card was given to the Thomond 16.

Three of the tries came from Wardy winning a lineout. In the 1st ,Pypes cut, then rucked; Atky attacked hard and fast going right and Kettyle scored in the left corner. For the 2nd Trask broke from good lineout ball and terrific

interpassing between the back three resulted in McKenzie scoring in the right-hand corner.

For the 3rd Quins drove the maul and Thomond appeared to drop it. However from the Thomond scrum in front of their posts an intercept allowed Conlon to barge over to the right of the uprights.

The fourth try involved Stewart stepping inside and linking with Trask for the first of his brace of tries.

The final try, Trask's 2nd, was a simple attack going right in their 22 from a ruck.

I thought Thomond, like Rainey the week before, had a fairly heavy pack, while their back three were useful footballers.

This was a very solid Quins' performance who now look forward to the second-round home-tie against Shannon next Saturday 13th October.

It is worth mentioning that both Pypes and McComb each saved a try in the 1st half by excellent covering.

Since Dave McHugh, Assessor and ex-International referee asked me, I made the penalty count 10 to 5 in favour of Quins who started with:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Willem Slabbert 13 Shane Stewart 12 Keith Pyper 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Thomas Horner 9 Karl Trask 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Alasdair Heatlie.

UCD v Grafton Belfast Harlequins AIB/AIL I 21st April 2007
2-30pm Belfield Bowl

UCD elected to play right to left(from the stand/Students' Union);Quins kicked off.
In the first half UCD did most of the attacking as one would expect of a big fit University side. Quins' tackling however was absolutely outstanding and against the run of play, Cave nonchalantly kicked a penalty on the stroke of normal time -following  UCD hands in the ruck. That was 2 minutes from half-time though I counted 5 injury stoppages. Given that UCD had missed two penalties and a drop goal, this score was a little flattering. From scrum, lineout, maul and ruck generally either Marshall boxed or Kettyle found touch. Quins fielded two outside centres with Pyper on the bench following hamstring twinges.
Spare a thought for McKenzie who, for the second week running flew in from Gt Britain, having been on the Ulster bench, how's that for commitment.
At least thrice in the first half we won crucial turnovers at the ruck.
At 9 minutes our player-coach Wardy was down after a heavy knock: supporters were relieved when the physio helped him to his feet: halftime: UCD 0 Quins 3.
Ironically Quins came much more into the game in the second half, many of the UCD players having taken big hits.
Nevertheless at 4 and 36 minutes, McFadden made amends for his first-half lapses and kicked two penalties; each followed an attempted drop goal, no advantage accruing in the second case. Charged down kicks and mishandling by our inside backs were unfortunately our undoing and the original causes of these 6
points.

At 47 minutes no-side arrived: final score:
UCD 6 Quins 3.

On 25 League points we are relegated to Division II to join Ballynahinch and Malone. Dolphin and Ballymena survived on 26, with UCD on 27.
This is not the end of the world: as the April/May edition of Hooker reminds us, we did win Division II in season 2001/2. Moreover we did reach a League Final in 2004/5 and a Cup Final in 2006/7, in the latter of which O'Connor injured his left ac joint early on. It has ben a tremendous effort since the New Year by Solly,
Wardy and Maurice and the team/squad: from being on our knees we very nearly survived. In mathematics an improperly posed problem is one in which a small error in input data causes a large error in output data. Never mind: onwards and upwards!
Commiserations to Colin Atkinson our team captain; since his return following a very early-season shoulder injury, he has tackled like a demon. Pre-season injury to Andress and intra-season injury to Stevenson and McCarey also caused
disruption. It should be pointed out that even if we had taken the penalty kick at Lansdowne to secure 2 points for a draw we would still have been relegated on points differential. Solly is returning immediately to IRB business, I understand, we wish him all the very best and are very grateful for his turning the ship around since Christmas.
All the very best to the men for 4th May at Ravenhill for the Ulster Senior Cup Final and the possibly to be arranged Ulster League match, both against Dungannon.

AIB/AIC Final:
Dubarry Park, Athlone,
14 April 2007:
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Garryowen

Quins elected to play into the breeze, towards the Buccaneers Clubhouse. G'owen kicked off.

In the first half G'owen scored 2 relatively simple tries: Ciaran O'Boyle at 4 and McGovern at 9 minutes, each converted by Hickey: Quins 0 G'owen 14.
At 22 and 38 minutes Hickey kicked penalties:
Quins 0 G'owen 20: the halftime score.

In the second half, playing with the breeze, Quins upped the ante and at 69 minutes, Kettyle made a long break off a Pyper reverse pass, and put the fast-moving McKenzie under the posts. Pyper converted:
Quins 7 G'owen 20.
Unfortunately this was to be the final score, leaving G'owen Champions and AIB Cup winners with Hickey man of the match. Had the score been only 7-13 we might have won in the last 12 minutes, such was our dominance at that stage of the game. Never mind, bad luck men, and on to UCD on Saturday 21st April.
A few talking points: scrums were uncontested between 50 and 56 minutes due to a blood injury to the G'owen substitute tight-head. At 72 minutes it had looked from the stand that Lowe got downward pressure in goal after a chip ahead. It was not awarded. At 19 minutes Blake-Knox had substituted for the injured O'Connor. At 48 minutes Johnston and Rea substituted for Gillespie and McLoughlin. At 63 minutes, Sheehan and Cillian O'Boyle likewise for Mackey and O'Loughlin. Between 59 and 63 minutes Quins launched an incessant attack comprising 23 mauls and/or rucks. Six minutes before we scored our brilliant try.
In conclusion all the very best of fortune to our excellent team in next Saturday's must-win AIL on 21st April.
It would be remiss of me not to mention that both AIB Cup Finals made for a great occasion. It was a great honour for Belfast Harlequins Club. Well done to AIB and IRFU and to the better team on the day: Garryowen. However 7-20 was no disgrace and spare a thought for the injured water-carrier: Chris McCarey.

Ballymena v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

AIB/AIL I at Eaton Park

Easter Saturday 7-4-7 at 3pm.

Quins elected to defend the Broughshane / Bouncy Castle end playing R to L, from the Stand, L to R from the Clubhouse. B'mena kicked off. (Note the palindromic date.)

The halftime score was: B'mena 9 Quins 7, Woods having kicked 3 penalties at 9, 15 and 45 minutes and
Philpott having scored a vital try at 36 minutes, converted by O'Connor. The heavy B'mena pack were quite dominant in this period, though significantly, Shaw was yellow-carded by Munster referee Peter Fitzgibbon (who had a very good game) at 35 minutes in the lead up to the Quins' try.

In the second half, as expected, Quins' superior fitness and mobility began to tell, though not before Maxwell dropped a goal after 5 minutes: B'mena 12 Quins 7.
After 20 minutes the referee spoke to both captains. From the following lineout, Quins attacked right then left, rucked under the B'mena posts, Pyper beat his man on the side-step and Marshall dived over under the posts, off a vicious side-step: a great try at 21 minutes converted by O’Connor: B'mena 12 Quins 14.
Quins had their noses in front for the first time and they were determined to keep their advantage. The pressure on
B'mena was beginning to tell and following a Wardy attack right; B'mena conceded a penalty on their 10-metre line at the ruck and to the right of the posts. O'Connor duly obliged with a magnificent penalty at 29 minutes:
B'mena 12 Quins 17.
At 37 and 38 minutes each of our halfbacks tried a drop-goal. At 43 minutes a punch-up occurred and the penalty was reversed, with Young being spoken to severely by the referee. (Not Mr Len Young my dapper friend who played in the Over-35's!) From the B'mena 10 metre line on the Bouncy side at 44minutes O'Connor punished B'mena with another magnificent penalty, to make the final score: B'mena 12 Quins 20.
No-side ensued at 45 minutes; Quins had their 4 League points.

This now leaves Buccaneers relegated, with Ballymena and  Dolphin on 25 League points, Quins on 24 and UCD on 23, all 4 fighting to avoid the other relegation spot.

The points differentials are:
B’mena (-26), Dolphin (-50), Quins (-77) and UCD (-96). Thus we need to beat UCD at Belfield on 21st April 2007, to be sure of retaining our Division I status. Provide UCD are denied a bonus point, actually a draw would suffice ( 2 points each); to be very academic, two bonus points would also suffice (1 for scoring 4 or more tries and 1 for losing by less than 8 points) since B'mena and Dolphin are unlikely to get much change away to Cork Con and Shannon, respectively (see Norman Johnston's trivial matrix:- now just a row or column vector), since both are chasing top-4 status.

In the meantime let us enjoy the AIB All-Ireland Cup Final against Garryowen at 4pm at Dubarry Park, Athlone, next Saturday 14th April. Let us wish our team manager Conor Keown good luck getting our squad to the venue.

ALL IRELAND CUP
SEMI-FINAL

Grafton Belfast Harlequins
V
Shannon RFC
Deramore, 31st March 2007

It was a beautiful day at Deramore, the clocks having gone forward the previous Sunday. Shannon elected to attack the Clubhouse end facing a light breeze (which was to die down in the second half).
Quins kicked off. Within 2 minutes McKenzie made a great break and linked with Cave who, taking the tackle, dived over for a try. O'Connor converted:
Quins 7 Shannon 0.
Quins were pressing when Shannon intercepted and at 9 minutes McNamara scored under the posts-conversion by Thompson:
Quins 7 Shannon 7.
Two minutes later O'Connor kicked a penalty (for pulling down in the scrum):
At 24 minutes Thompson kicked a penalty, following advantage.
Quins 10 Shannon 10.
Following a hooked Quins penalty kick, Shannon dropped out at the 22-metre line. Ward caught, Quins mauled and rucked, Cave grubbered, Stevenson drove (sucking in the Shannon defence); the ball was spun right with a 3/4 man overlap and on 33 minutes McKenzie put Philpott in for a great try, converted by O'Connor:
Quins 17 Shannon 10.
An unfortunate Quins offside at the ruck allowed Shannon to find touch close to the Quins line. From the ensuing mauled lineout, McMahon score a try converted by Thompson:
Quins 17 Shannon 17.

This was the halftime score. Between 11 and 13 minutes into the second half, Quins won a lineout on the right and created a series of rucks from the last of which Marshall dived over: Quins 22 Shannon 17.
A minute later Thompson kicked a penalty:
Quins 22 Shannon 20.
On 23 minutes from a lineout and another series of rucks, Quins brought Kettyle into the line; he passed inside to McKenzie who side-stepped Lawlor magnificently to score under the posts; conversion by O'Connor:
Quins 29 Shannon 20.
However Quins then conceded a lineout 10 metres out and from the mauled lineout Hogan scored an unconverted try:
Quins 29 Shannon 25.
A Quin's offside at 35 minutes allowed Thompson to kick his third penalty:
Quins 29 Shannon 28.
On 39 minutes Shannon were penalised for dropping a Quins' maul and O'Connor as he had done in the AIL-I League game kicked an important penalty,
to make the final score:
Quins 32 Shannon 28.

A great performance by the entire team with each and every individual contributing superbly. Well done everyone! Our tackling of their ball carriers coming off long series of mauls and rucks won us this game in the last quarter. Shannon are always very competitive so to beat them for a second time in 2007 was no mean achievement. A truly memorable match very well refereed by Leinster referee Mr David Keane!

Teams:
Quins:15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward(C) 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Stephen Robinson
The 7 substitutes were 16 Alan Rankin 17 Ben Hanvey 18 David Johnston 19 Graham Jewhurst 20 Roger Kirkwood 21 Rory Blake-Knox 22 Simon Rea.

Shannon:
15 Mossy Lawlor 14 Mark Tuohy 13 Ross O'Loughin 12 John Clogan 11 Davis O'Donovan 10 Andrew Thompson 9 Frank McNamara 1 Conor Castigan 2 T-J Hickey 3 Kevin Griffin 4 Fergal Walsh 5 Padraic O'Brien 6 Garrett Noonan 7 Colm McMahon(C) 8 David Quinlan.
The 7 substitutes were :16 Les Hogan 17 Frank Roche 18 Pat O'Connor 19 Tadhg Bennett 20 Eoin Grace 21 Eamonn Lane 22 Phil O'Connor.

The matrix of fixtures rarely shortens! Only another 5 fixtures to go - honest!
Saturdays 7, 14, 21,28 April - B'mena, Garryowen, UCD, Dungannon, in the AILeague, All Ireland Cup Final, AILeague and the Ulster Senior Cup Final & USL, respectively. The first three are at 3pm, 4pm and 2-30pm and at B'mena, Dubarry Park (Athlone) and Belfield, Dublin, respectively.

And of course the First Trust Ulster Senior Cup Final at Ravenhill on 4th May, Friday evening at Ravenhill.

 AIL1
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Buccaneers RFC

Saturday 24th March 2007

 Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson (C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Buccs fielded:
15 Sean Carey 14 Alan Gaughan 13 Alex Hayman 12 Aidan Wynne 11 Tom Cregan 10 Gearoid O'Grady 9 Mark Bruce 1 Michael Diffley 2 Garreth Halligan 3 Killian O'Neill 4 Pat Cunningham 5 David McGowan 6 Colin Finnerty 7 Conor Hartigan (C) 8 David Kelly.

Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse end. A strong southerly sun was eventually to move South-Westerly in the second half. Buccs kicked off.
This was to prove to be a do-or-die cockerel fight with Mr Dermot Maloney penalising both sets of cockerels on numerous occasions. O'Connor kicked three penalties for Quins at 3,17 and 62 mins while Tom Cregan for Buccs kicked four at 52,58,66 and 73 mins.
It was therefore appropriate that the winning score was the only try of the match scored by Kettyle at 45 mins after
excellent attacking first right then left, involving the entire back-row:
Quins 14 Buccs 12.
Four vital points that lift us from sixteenth to fourteenth 2 League points ahead of Buccs and UCD who are both on 18, each having secured a bonus point for losing by less than 8 match points.
A few talking points: David Creighton substituted for Kirkwood at 43 mins, Philpott and Stevenson were both cautioned and O'Connor at 65 mins was yellow carded. Such was the red-Giant effect of the Sun that it appeared as if the card was red: fortunately not. I did think that their loose-head prop was refusing to take the scrummage pressure by standing up or collapsing and might have been penalised more often. Some of our box-kicks went out on the full, in both halves.
So with a cockerel fight now developing between the bottom 3 plus Dolphin and Ballymena, we must now prepare ourselves for away contests with Ballymena on Easter Saturday 7th (3pm KO: please note) and with UCD on the 21st (normal 2-30pm), both April.
In the meantime all the very best to Solly, Wardy, Atky, Maurice and the team/squad next Saturday in the AIB All-Ireland Cup semi-final against Shannon at 2-30pm 31st March at Grafton Arena, Deramore Park.
A season of oxymoron proportions, if ever there was one!

AIL 1
Lansdowne FC v Grafton Belfast Harlequins
Saturday 3rd March 2007

On a very fine Spring day, only to be broken by a second-half shower of rain, Quins elected to face the swirling wind and the Eastern Stand of the former International Stadium, equivalently playing east to west or from the Landowne Clubhouse, right to left. L'downe kicked off.
To cut a long story short, the first half finished: L'downe 0 Quins 0, and hopes were high among Quins' supporters, as Quins were turning round to play with the dreaded swirling wind.
Re the first half, Doran Jones and Conlon (Alan Rankin subbing on for 10 mins for Johnston) were yellow-carded at 18 mins and Ward at 22 mins.
In the second half the Senior Leinster touch-judge came on as referee, presumably following injury of the Munster referee Olan Trevor and after consultation with the fourth official Paul Clinch.
It has to be said also that the Lansdowne pitch was bare, much of it without grass. This made for difficulties, for both sides, with both footing and the bounce of the ball. After 3 mins of the 2nd half, Geraghty kicked a simple penalty for a Quins' offside:
L'downe 3 Quins 0.
At 7 mins Pyper scored a great try to the right of the posts following advantage from a L'downe dropped maul, 2 metres out from their goal-line. Crucially the conversion was missed:
L'downe 3 Quins 5.
There were a couple of Quins near-miss tries on either wing, denied only by a foot in touch.
On 30 mins, however, Gavin O'Meara, who had subbed on for Doran Jones, was mauled over for an unconverted try: L'downe 8 Quins 5 which was to prove to be the final score.
Between 32 and 37 mins Quins were awarded a penalty near the posts on the L'downe 5 metres line, following a great bout of handling in attack. Quins declined the simple (if anything was simple on such a day) penalty kick at goal ( which would perhaps have given us two points for a draw) in favour of an attacking scrum. L'downe collapsed it twice. At the third we were penalised for offside following a wheel and pick.
And so we had to settle for one bonus point for losing by less than eight points. Coleman's yellow-card on 44 mins was superfluous and no-side followed at 47 mins

Quins fielded
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 David Johnston 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Ward(VC)
L'downe fielded
15 Mana Ashford 14 Alan McCormack 13 Neil Walsh 12 Robbie Dolan 11 John Coleman 10 Andrew Geraghty 9 Derry Coughlan 1 John Lyne 2 Kevin Corrigan 3 Paul Doran Jones 4 Alan Maher 5 Devin Toner 6 David Lavin(C) 7 Vinny O'Dowd 8 Shane McCarthy.
.
In post-mortem terms, it has to be admitted that, for a variety of reasons ,we lost seven of our own lineouts: L'downe
had quite a big pack. It was our first defeat in seven outings. Also, our goal kicking recorded nil points, a mitigating circumstance being the difficult swirling wind.
And so to the theory of the off-diagonal matrix elements (no team plays itself).Put very simply, we must now beat
Buccaneers at home on the 24th March and UCD away on the 21st April. Ballymena away on Easter Saturday looks a strong possibility. Twenty-eight/nine points are our target.

Go for it Quins!

AIL 1
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v St Mary's RFC

Saturday 17th February 2007 at Grafton Arena, Deramore Park.

Mary's elected to defend the Clubhouse end, into a rather strong south-west Sun.Quins kicked off. After 2 mins O'Connor kicked a massive penalty from halfway to put Quins ahead 3-0 - a lead they were subsequently never to relinquish. At 39 mins the Quins' score was doubled by an easier O'Connor penalty to leave the halftime score at:
Quins 6 Mary's 0.
However it has to be said that this was despite Mary's having the bulk of possesson and territory. But Quins' tackling and general defending had been superb .It had to be!
Turning round to play into the Sun, Quins reversed the latter trend and attacked for most of the second half. On 18 mins Duggan was yellow-carded by referee Donal Courtney and O'Connor kicked his third penalty:
Quins 9 Mary's 0.
On 24 mins Mary's Sexton kicked a simple penalty, following a rare Mary's attack, to make it:
Quins 9 Mary's 3.
On 34 mins O'Connor kicked his fourth penalty:
Quins 12 Mary's 3.
Thus for the last 10 mins Mary's were in search of two scores. However on 41 mins Lowe scored an excellent try in the right-hand corner, from a blind-side break off a scrum.O'Connor hit a marvellous conversion from virtually the touchline to leave the final score at no-side:
Quins 19 Mary's 3,
This conversion gave O'Connor a total of 5 perfect place-kicks. Marshall had his best game to date (apart from one goal-line wobbler),with 90 minutes of concentration, box kicks and two magnificent long breaks.
As is now customary the pack were outstanding in scrum, maul, lineout, ruck and tackle. They had to be in order to overcome a determined Mary's side.

Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward(VC)7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey
Mary's fielded:
15 Robert Gannon 14 John McWeeney 13 Steven Grissing 12 Philip Brophy 11 Ronan Doherty 10 Jonathan Sexton
9 Matt D'Arcy 1 Matt Duggan 2 Richard Sweeney 3 Robert Sweeney 4 Gareth Logan (C) 5 Steve Bradshaw 6 Willie Duggan 7 Paul Nash 8 Hugh Hogan

Let's take one step at a time: next up on the AIB/AIL I trail is Lansdowne away on the 3rd March, in 2 weeks time.
Go for it!

And all the best.

 Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Galwegians

Quarter-Final AIB CUP
at Grafton Arena,Deramore Park,2-30pm 3rd February 2007.

On a beautiful wind-less day,Quins elected to defend the Clubhouse end. Wegians kicked off.

At 19 mins Blake-Knox kicked a penalty for offside. This was to prove to be the final difference. After a series of rucks,Quins' McCarey fairly raced in at 30 mins for an unconverted try. After an unfortunate misjudgment at 33 mins: Quins kicked a punt staight out to touch  from 1 metre outside the 22. From the ensuing 23 m lineout Wegians took a quick throw and Slemen scored a try converted by Wakely. On 40 mins Quins missed a penalty. The halftime score was:
                          Quins  8  Wegians  7.
Quins had had most of the 1st half's pressure and possession, so 11-0 would not have been out of place.Quins supporters were already a little anxious as Andress, Philpott and Atkinson, from the pack, and Cave and O'Connor, from the backs, were all missing, the latter two, due to Friday night's Ireland U20s match in Wales.
The 2nd half saw much pressure early on from Wegians with long sustained  series of rucks and mauls. However we somehow survived and Pyper subbed on for the injured Lowe, with Kettyle going to fullback and Pyper going to centre. The latter has a great ability to cross the advantage line and after a long series of Quins' mauls and rucks, Spiderman Ward fairly spun out of a tackle to score a great try, superbly converted by Pyper,at 18 mins:
                         Quins   15   Wegians  7.
At 23 mins,Slemen put in a fine cross-field punt which was caught on the full by Clearly who fell over the line  with a defender on his back, to make  it:
                         Quins    15   Wegians  12.
After 37 mins, referee Marshall Kilgore advanced a Quins penalty by 10 metres for talking.Kettyle found an excellent  touch  12 metres out from  the Wegians goal line on the stand side. Excellent mauling and rucking by Quins at 39 mins put  McCarey in for his 2nd try of the match.  Pyper again struck a superb conversion: With it well into injury time, the score was
                         Quins  22    Wegians  12.
Wegians needed two scores. They got one on the stroke of time(43 mins), after a great jinking run by Clearly who scored a converted try:
                         Quins   22 Wegians  19.

So three tries each but a very deserved, spirited and hard-earned Quins victory: the fourth on the trot! The semifinal beckons -  though not until 31st March, against Clonakilty, Garryowen or Shannon. We all have a Saturday off before a must-win game in the AIB/AIL I at home against St Mary's on 17th February.

Kirkwood, Kettyle, and Pyper, excelled in the backs. The entire pack excelled, but Rankin in his inaugural start at tight-head, and Rourke for his endeavour are  parteticularly worthy of mention. But the effort and determination of all 8 were crucial, to avenging our 29-8 mauling in Galway in October.Well done Solly, Wardy, Maurice, team!

Quins:
15 Jonny Lowe 14 Simon Ray 13 Mark Kettyle 12 Mike McKeever 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Rory Blake-Knox 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 Alan Rankin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward(C) 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey
Wegians:
15 Kieran Hickman 14 John Cleary 13 Nick Wakely 12 Anthony Barrett 11 Colin Mbongwa 10 Dave Slemen 9 Luke Stringer 1 Dan O'Connell 2 Conor Muldoon 3 Ross Davis 4 Liam Scahill 5 Derek Boyd 6 Ambrose Conboy 7 Arran  cGettigan

AIL1

Blackrock College v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

Stradbrook Road, 27 January 2007.

Looking from the Clubhouse, the light wind was blowing transversely, right to left. Quins elected to play towards the Clubhouse and Rock kicked off. In addition to the usual representatives, Paul McKenzie, Paul Marshall and Stuart Philpott were with Ulster for the Ospreys game.
Rock have the best attacking record (in points) and the worst defence (in points) in the AIL I and so it proved!
In the 1st half Rock scored 3 tries (Morrissey, Byrnes and Pal'aoma at 2, 13, 42 mins respectively), Carr converting all three. Quins scored 4 tries (McCarey (2), Atkinson and Cave at 18, 30, 35 and 39 mins respectively), O'Connor converting all four, though missing 2 penalties in front of the posts.
This was a great comeback by Quins having been down 14-0!

Half-time score: Rock 21 Quins 28.

In the 2nd half, after 7 mins Pyper was unsurprisingly yellow-carded by referee Ger English for deliberately knocking on. Pypes was not totally to blame! Carr kicked the simple penalty. After 10 mins a missed one-on-one tackle gave Carr a goal for Rock. On 13 mins Ward secured the ball but Kettyle was spoken to by the referee. From the resulting 5m lineout, Woods touched down for an unconverted try. Suddenly we were 36-28 down, out of even
bonus-point territory. However Rock do concede many penalties for ruck and maul infringements and from one such hands-in-the-ruck and from the ensuing mauled Quins' lineout, Stevenson at 17 mins stormed over for an important try ,converted by O'Connor to put us one point behind:
Rock 36 Quins 35.
Rourke and Graham were then yellow-carded on the advice of a touch-judge; Pyper returned to action and Alan Rankin subbed on for Conlon. On 24 mins Rock were penalised for obstruction; from the ensuing mauled lineout Andress scored a great try to put us , significantly, in front for the last and enduring time:
Rock 36 Quins 40.
At 29 mins Rourke and Graham returned to action and Quins fairly drove a Rock mauled lineout back, thus securing a scrum put-in. To coin a phrase, Rock were rocking and were penalised at the scrum for O'Connor to nail an inaugural penalty, on the day.
Coming into injury time , Ward, from a driving run, scored an excellent try half way out on the right - only for the referee to disallow it for " a double movement". Strange !
Then in the last move of the game, Roger Kirkwood put in a delightful chip over the Blackrock line. Chris McCarey swooped under the Blackrock defender to touch down near the left hand corner. Amazingly, the ref, who could only have been mis-sighted, blew for full time , without seeking any dialogue with the touch-judge !
The final score:
Rock 36 Quins 43,
This result thus secured Quins 5 precious points (4 for a win and 1 for 4 tries, actually 6 tries) and Rock 2 bonus points(1 for losing by less than 8 points and 1 for 4 tries).
What a match!
We are still propping up Division I on 11 points, but with St Mary's and Buccaneers both at home and UCD away, we have 3 of the bottom 5 in our sights.
Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes(nothing to do with Phoenix Park), survival looks a whole lot more probable. We need to avoid missing one-on-one tackles and to make our goal and punt kicks more consistently secure, however. Our pack will not always have the strength, willpowerand determination to compensate.
I thought Stevenson was outstanding and extremely well supported by our entire back-row of Ward, McCarey and Atkinson, and at close quarters by Rourke and Andress. Hanvey threw into the lineouts well.
Of course Rock's attacking rucks and mauls were very good, but the Irish Times' Saturday prediction of a home win proved mistaken .So well done Quins!especially the 5 try-scorers ( a brace for McCarey).

 TEAMS:

Quins:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C)8 Chris McCarey.

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Shannon

20 January 2007
AIB/AIL League I
Grafton Arena Deramore

Shannon elected to play into the southwesterly strong diagonal wind. Quins kicked off towards the Clubhouse. Quins were missing  regulars McKenzie and Marshall who were with the Ulster side in Toulouse.

This was to be an amazing, exciting, unpredictable game, resulting in the defeat of the eight-times champions, Shannon. The excellent TV programme "Waking the Dead" pales into insignificance, by comparison. Three Decembers ago we had done the same (cf 19-18 in 2004 with 19-17 in 2007) but this time we doubled the margin and trebled our Season 2006/7 League points.

But to the events.

After 8 mins (the scoreboard clock was 2 mins fast) Shannon's flanker O'Connor scored a try, Bennett converting.
After 17 mins Pyper replied with a classic side step and change of direction and pace, with great determination. O'Connor converted and 5 mins later kicked his first penalty. After a series of rucks, Walsh scored an unconverted
try to leave the score: Quins 10 Shannon 12 at halftime - before which there had been 3 cautions (2 & 1 respectively) .I was impressed by a try-saving tackle by Kettyle and by Cave's strategic diagonal punting. Supporters at this stage were nervous with Quins turning to face the diagonal wind. Their anxiety was increased when Atkinson was unfortunate to be yellow-carded by referee Alan Rogan, when Atky and Lawlor both jumped for a high
ball in open play. Yet at 8 mins into the 2nd half, O'Connor kicked a penalty to nudge Quins in front:
Quins 13 Shannon 12.
On 13 mins Buckley was yellow-carded, as were Philpott and Shannon's Pat O'Connor two mins later. At 21 mins Hanvey replaced McCarey temporarily, to complete our front row in our 7-man scrum. On 24 mins Rankin was cautioned having subbed on for the injured Conlon. Following a mauled lineout, McMahon secured an unconverted try to make the score: Quins 13 Shannon 17.
On 29 mins O'Connor kicked his 3rd penalty: Quins 16 Shannon 17.
On 35 mins O'Connor crucially pushed a penalty to the right of the posts, the
component of the wind, significantly, blowing from left to right.
And so to the denouement, the coda, the coup de grace.

Incredibly 5 metres in from the left-hand touchline and just about on halfway, with the last
kick of the game O'Connor kicked a tremendous penalty, I would estimate at 55 metres
across the aforesaid wind. Amazing, incredible!
The flags went up, - the final whistle sounded: no time for a riposte. Joyous jubilation by the Quins' players contrasted with the frozen statues which were the Shannon players who could hardly move in total disbelief.

. The final score: Quins 19 Shannon 17.

Teams:

Quins:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey

Shannon fielded:
15 Mossy Lawlor 14 David O'Donovan 13 Pat O'Connor 12 John Clogan 11 Andrew Finn 10 Tadgh Bennett 9 Frank McNamara 1 Les Hogan 2 Sean Cronin 3 Tony Buckley 4 Padraic O'Brien 5 Fergal Walsh 6 Phil O'Connor 7 Colm McMahon(C) 8 David Quinlan

This is not hyperbole.
Because we took the Champions on in the 2nd half and defeated them.
This was a terrific team (backs & forwards) performance. Ward was outstanding and O'Connor was magnificent The back three harried and hustled like pit bull terriers.
See you at Blackrock, Stradbrook Rd, next Saturday 27 January 2007.

Of our 6 remaining AIL matches (4 away, 2 at home) 5 teams are in the lower half of the table, below Shannon.

Solly is absolutely correct in targeting all six!
In short, brilliant, miraculous, phenomenal!

Well done everybody!

AIB Cup Round 1
13 January 2007
Grafton Belfast Harlequins
v
Nenagh Ormond
2-30pm at Grafton Arena Deramore Park.

Quins welcomed Nenagh - Ormond to a blustery Deramore for the first time.

Quins were without Paul McKenzie and Paul Marshall to Ulster, while Mark Kettyle and Stuart Philpott were late cry-offs. Especial congratulations go to Paul McKenzie for making his first Heiniken start for Ulster (v Llanelli).

Nenagh elected to play towards the Clubhouse and Quins kicked off.
A strong wind blew transversely, from Newforge to Deramore, South to North, throughout the match. In the first half Quins were solid in scrum, lineout, ruck, maul and tackling. Nenagh were equally determined in defence
Stevenson was cautioned and Ward was yellow-carded - each on the advice of the touch-judge.
Pyper executed two excellent scissors with O'Connor, one of which led to a promising attack. The halftime score was: Quins 0 Nenagh 0.
At halftime it rained cats and dogs and playing conditions became  atrocious.
In the second half Nenagh began to tire as Quins upped the ante. Three tries were scored, by Stevenson, after 14 mins from a series of rucks and mauls, Pyper, after 30 mins and following his own delicate chip to force a lineout, and Cave after 40 mins, from a delicate boxed kick by Kirkwood. Pyper converted all three, the last from wide-out. Indeed Pyper impressed throughout.
Thus the final score, three goals to nil, was: Quins 21 Nenagh 0.
Simon Rea had subbed on for O'Connor with Pyper going to outhalf and McKeever to centre, with Rea going to the left wing.
The Teams:
Quins: 1 Niall Conlon 2 Ben Hanvey 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey 9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Niall O'Connor 11 Gavin McLoughlin 12 Keith Pyper 13 Darren Cave 14 Mike McKeever 15 Jonny Lowe

It would appear that the AIL Cup quarter-final will be on the 3rd February.

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Dungannon
 AIB/AIL I, 6th Jan 2007, KO 2-30pm,
Grafton Arena, Deramore Park

On a clear but cold day, Quins elected to play from the Pavilion End, with Dungannon kicking off.

McCarter kicked 2 penalties at 17 and 21 mins (the latter having been reversed by referee David Wilkinson);
O’Connorreplied at 32 mins to leave the halftime score at Quins 3 Duns 6.
This was despite Stevenson being yellow-carded for offside (!) at 25 mins, while Fitzpatrick and Rainey were merely cautioned after 9 mins, for trampling.
In the 2nd half, Caldwell at 5, McCarter at 29 and Hennessey at 32 mins had three tries for Duns, with McCarter converting his own try, under the posts.
Quins' only riposte was a penalty at 9 mins by O'Connor.
A turning point had been at 15 mins into the 2nd half, when Duns were penalised for tackling the man without the ball: Pehi was yellow carded. Crucially the penalty, which would have brought the score to 9-11,was missed.

Final Score: Quins 6  -  Dungannon 23

As the video will show (I do not view any videos), at 6-11 down, some wild passing led to our demise. After all, we were playing with the breeze, by choice. Their 3 tries came from a maul, an intercept (McCarter looked  a metre offside) and a breakdown/ruck, consecutively.

Our pack performed admirably throughout; some indiscipline was to be expected given the extensive aggression of the Duns' pack.

Annacotty, Limerick: AIB/AIL I.

Quins elected to face the elements: slope, diagonal wind and sun. UL/Bohs kicked off accordingly. After 2 mins, Quins earned a penalty on the home-22 straight in front of the posts; it was missed. After 12 mins, a Quins penalty was reversed and a player cautioned for a high tackle, following a touch judge's flag.

For the 1st 10 mins of the half it had mostly been all Quins. The rest of the half, against the elements, was mostly hard graft in defence. Unfortunately on the halfhour, Minnis was yellow-carded for preventing the ball emerging from the ruck. Even more unfortunately, on the stroke of half time, with only seven forwards, O'Gorman got in for a try, converted by Martin.
