First Trust Ulster Senior Cup Final
Ravenhill 7-30 pm
Friday 25 April 2008

BELFAST HARLEQUINS 22
BALLYMENA 17

Quins elected to attack Cherryvale and Ballymena kicked off to the Clock end, under blazing floodlight and with a Southerly breeze in their favour.

In the 1st half Quins scored against the breeze: a penalty by Slabbert at 5, an excellent try by Cave at 21 converted by Slabbert who kicked 2nd and 3rd penalties at 40 and 43 to leave the half-time score at: Quins 16 Ballymena 0.

The game was held up for 9 minutes, for Rory Blake Knox to be stretchered off. (We are all delighted to hear from Stephen that nothing is broken and that the prognosis for recovery is good.).  Atky went to the wing, Horner to outhalf and David Johnston to right flanker.

In the 2nd half,at 53, left wing Mitchell opened the scoring for Ballymena, Campbell converting. Three minutes later Slabbert dropped a perfect goal, making the score at the end of the 3rd quarter - Quins 19 Ballmena 7.  At 67,  Ballymena got a superb 2nd try, following a clever grubber kick by Campbell who also converted. Six minutes, later Slabbert kicked a penalty - only for Campbell to reply immediately with the same medicine.

The game was trying hard to be a cliff-hanger, but the final score ,deservedly, was : Quins 22 Ballymena 17,  making Quins double First-Trust Ulster Senior League and Cup Champions for season 2007/8 and for the first time, though the amalgamated Clubs: Collegians in 1961 and North in 1955, had each previously achieved the hallowed ground.
The NewsLetter man of the match was Colin Atkinson for at least two try-saving tackles of significance. My own m-o-m was Willem Slabbert who kicked 17 points equalling Ballymena's total.

Quins won a lot of turnovers in ruck, maul, scrum and lineout, probably twice as many as Ballymena. Full credit to Ballymena for making this a very entertaining match, as they mixed their running and kicking game in the 2nd half. Mr Henry the referee was sharp on duck diving and hands-in- the-ruck, thus discouraging negative play.

Quins started with:

15 Keith Pyper 14 Thomas Horner 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson. Other subs were Alan Rankin, Graham Jewhurst (subbing for Rourke), Andrew McKeen and Fred Cuttle.

Darren Cave has won a full Ulster contract next season and we wish him well. Niall Conlon is going to Cambridge University and we wish him well also. Andy Ward comes to the end of his tenure as Director of Rugby, so yesterday was his last game for the Club.We will always remember him for the 1999 Ulster Heineken Cup victory :1/4, 1/2 and 1 finals. On the pitch he always liked to play in a 6 shirt; he jumped at 8 and covered the touchlines for the counter-kicks, as an 8.He defended at the breakdown as a 7 if not actually winning a turnover. He has been a great player and leader on the pitch. It has been a privilege to serve him as PRO, following a coffee in StarBucks 2 years ago, He is a tough, hard, uncompromising antipodean. All the best, Wardy, whatever the future brings.

Finally Ronnie Gregg , President 2006-8, goes out with a big bang and we thank him for all his efforts on our behalf , not least last night's celebrations in the Clubhouse. This amazing character will still be serving the Club next season in some capacity. Well done Ronnie, Colin,Wardy and the playing and managerial teams in general.

Senior Cup Semi-Final

Dub Lane, 5th April 2008

This was to be Upper Malone versus Lower Malone, Division III versus Division II, each disappointingly 3rd placed, in a game to be dominated by a Westerly wind quickly veering North Westerly.
Quins elected to play into the wind and to attack the Black Mountain on a perfect pitch, appropriately parallel to Quins' 1st XV pitch. In less than 2 minutes, the QUB 11 touched down with QUB 9 converting. The exercise was repeated 11 minutes later: QUB 14 Quins 0. Seven minutes later Quins were back in the game with a try by hooker Logan from a mauled lineout.
Eleven minutes later QUB 9 kicked , ominously, a simple penalty straight in front of the posts: QUB 17 Quins 5. Five minutes later Gillespie got in for an excellent try from multiple phases of ruck and maul, after a good run by Rourke. Slabbert, kicking across the wind, nailed an important conversion to leave the 1/2 time score at: QUB 17 Quins 12, Shane Stewart having subbed on for the injured Blake Knox with Pyper going to outhalf.
Quins were happy enough having done very well against the wind, despite a bad opening ten minutes. However and unfortunately Conlon had been yellow-carded just before 1/2 time, Alan Rankin subbing on for ten minutes with Heatlie going to the bench.
After 42 minutes the game was delayed after the collision of two QUB players, which was to create an important amount of time to be added on. Nerves began to jangle.Quins pack were dominating but lack of scanning often resulted in slow release to the outside backs. This jangling was compounded when QUB 9 kicked a penalty across the wind, after 60: QUB 20 Quins 12, Quins thus requiring two scores.
David Johnston came on for Rourke with Heatlie moving to 4. At 72 Slabbert kicked a penalty from straight in front of the posts inside QUB 22: Only one score required. Sensibly Quins camped in the QUB North corner but were held up in-goal 3 to 4 times on the trot. However on 83 Quins finally got the pushover try their pack deserved,Gillespie touching down 5m in from the North touchline: QUB 20 Quins 20.
With hushed breath,Slabbert selected a wooden driver from his Club bag. The low-trajectory conversion kick was heading for just under the cross-bar when the NW wind lifted the ball up onto the cross-bar . It hit the top side, bounced upwards and was carried over by the strong gust. It fell lamely behind the uprights and after a little thought the touch-judges raised their flags: QUB 20 Quins 22.
So two minutes later Quins had come through to their 4th consecutive Senior Cup Final by the skin of their teeth (or was it cross-bar), to face the winner of next week's Semi - Final  : Ballymena v Malone.

Quins started with: 15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Thomas Horner 12 Keith Pyper 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Graham Jewhurst 6 Alister Heatlie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.
Commiserations to QUB in a vey close encounter of the second and third kinds:it was a highly entertaining cliff-hanger of a match,at least for the neutral, with Lower Malone reaching the Final in time added on.

Quins v Ards

Senior Cup 1/4 Final

Deramore Park

15th March 2008

Quins elected to defend Deramore Park South.Ards kicked off. While the official luncheon speeches were being completed Ards missed a penalty during the first 10 minutes.

Sadly and unfortunately, Roger Kirkwood broke his ankle after 12 minutes. The game was delayed for 30 minutes for the ambulance to arrive and take him to hospital. Both teams gave him a round of applause, which was nice. We wish him well for a good recovery.

Both teams and referee Mark Hermin endeavoured to keep warm and David Creighton subbed on. Wisely the lights were put on, to counteract the dusky sky. In the prolonged first half, Atkinson and Slabbert each scored a try, the latter converting each and adding a penalty to leave the 1/2 time score at: Quins 17 Ards 0.

Keith Pyper subbed on for Rory Blake Knox at outhalf and Quins kicked off towards the Black Mountain. Tries were added by Ward(44), Slabbert(47), McLoughlin(58) and Horner(74),the 1st two being converted by Slabbert, making the final score: Quins 41 Ards 0.

Gareth Rourke, Austin Blackburn (inaugural first game:one of Terry's sons) and David Johnston subbed on in the 2nd half for Conlon, Slabbert and Voisey, with the versatile Atky going to the wing. The semifinal is down for the 5th April. More significantly, see you next Saturday 22nd March, Easter Saturday, at Deramore for the home match versus Suttonians in the AIL II League: a vital game to win, with a try bonus.
Go for it,men.

Quins started with:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Thomas Horner 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Alister Heatlie 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Andrew Gillespie.

Malone
v
Quins

First Trust Ulster Senior League
Gibson Park
Saturday 29th December 2007

-------

Malone 0  -   Quins 30

Malone Red-Sox elected to defend East Belfast. The South Belfast blue wheelie-bin men of Quins (here, I refer to the less than harlequin pale-blue shirts) kicked off.

The light Westerly breeze, veering Northerly, was to die down at halftime. Although the rain stayed away, the pitch was heavy underfoot due to earlier heavy rain.

Quins were in the lead at halftime by 15-0 thanks to two excellent tries at 2 and 33 by McLoughlin whose agile speed gave the appearance of a skater in full flight. Slabbert converted the first and kicked a penalty at 19   - with the aid of a rare complete rainbow ( spherical refraction of different wave-lengths of the components of white light.)

In the second half Slabbert kicked a simple penalty at 58. Stewart at 69, under the posts, following a good break by

Ward, and Slabbert at 78 added tries, the latter converting the former, to leave the final score at: Malone 0 Quins 30 -- and despite Malone having had a fair amount of possession.

I thought McComb, Rourke and Ward were outstanding in an excellent pack. The backs' defence was also excellent.

The key aspect of Quins' play, for me, was their total commitment to highly successful tackling, although both sides won turnovers in the various phases of play.
The four tries by Quins secured a bonus point. More significantly,Quins retained the First Trust Ulster Senior League title with a game in hand (Ballymena(A )was postponed).

As is now customary the crock of gold was not available, presumably being located at the end of the rainbow.

Congratulations to the 1st XV!

In the second half, Simon Rea subbed on for Blake-Knox (injured), with Pyper and Slabbert moving to Fly-Half and Outside Centre respectively.

Unused subs were Alan Rankin,Stephen Robinson, Alasdair Heatlie and Thomas Horner.

Congratulations also to Quins 2nds on their comprehensive 45-8 League victory over Malone 2s on the far pitch in the 1pm pipe-opener.

Quins started with:

1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward (C) 7 David Johnston 8 Andrew Gillespie 9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Rory Blake Knox 11 Willem Slabbert 12 Shane Stewart 13 Keith Pyper 14 Gavin McLoughlin 15 Mark Kettyle.

Quins
v
Instonians
Saturday 22nd December 2007

 Quins 56 - Instonians 25

Quins elected to play parallel to the East-West axis running from the hockey pitches to the Gaelic pitch.Inst kicked off with the strong Southerly Sun to their right.

Suffice it to say that Quins won by 10 tries to 4,each side securing a bonus point. Quins' tries were by Cave, Johnston, Kettyle,Ward, Slabbert, Gillespie, Stewart, McLoughlin, Slabbert and McLoughlin at 3, 23, 34, 41; 50, 53, 56, 57, 71, 79.
Inst tries came at 8; 45, 64 and 76.

The half-time score was thus: Quins 24 Inst 8, Slabbert having converted the 1st & 4th tries and Inst having kicked a penalty at 31. Inst converted their 4th try while Pyper converted Quins' 7th try, leaving the full-time score at: Quins 56 Inst 25.

In the 2nd half ,Keith Pyper and Stephen Robinson subbed on for Blake Knox and Gillespie. Subs not used were Alan Rankin, Stuart Philpott and Karl Trask.

At times this was champagne rugby (no magnum required this week either), once or twice just a little silly - eg the Inst 3rd try, Quins forgetting to ground the ball in goal! In general this was a festive performance, befittingly, and augurs well for our development as a team, as the season progresses.
One had to feel sorry for our thrower-in, looking straight into a strong Sun on the North touchline. Fortunately it went down at half-time.
I thought our more experienced players showed a high level of leadership:determination and robustness, allowing our less experienced players to fit well into the general pattern of events.

Fair dues to Inst who contributed with their own brand of attacking rugby.

As one may deduce, Quins scored 4 tries in the sixth octet. Cave's cross-kick to Stewart for our 7th try in the 6th octet was a sublime crescendo.

We started with:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Darren Cave 12 Shane Stewart 11 Willem Slabbert 10 Rory Blake Knox  9 David Creighton 1 Niall Conlon 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward (C) 7 David Johnston 8 Andrew Gillespie

Dungannon
v
Quins
ULSTER SENIOR LEAGUE
STEVENSON PARK
Saturday 24th November 2007

On the main floodlit North-South Prunty pitch , Dungannon elected to defend the 2nd-XV-pitch end.Quins kicked off, across the strong transverse Westerly wind. The game had hardly commenced when Jewhurst suffered a rib injury, McComb subbing on.

During the 1st quarter the reigning Champions were in the ascendancy, despite the resting of Slabbert and Ward.

At 8 and 17, Quinn (of Quins) kicked two penalties to leave Quins 6-0 up, the second having been advanced 10 m for homeside talking. At 19 a third, but longer, penalty attempt was hooked. However, early in the 2nd quarter,at 22, the Dungannon left wing came across to make the extra man and scored a good unconverted try. At 41 Gannon out-half kicked a penalty to leave the home-side, leading by Dungannon 8 Quins 6.

In the 2nd half the home-team's outhalf kicked an important penalty in the 4th quarter,at 69, to make the winning score: Dungannon 11 Quins 6.

Quins had used three of their other subs: Stuart Philpott for Logan, David Creighton for Trask and Mark McGrath for McCarey (with some rearrangement of the pack). Despite much effort in the last 10 minutes especially (a late

penalty was sliced), Quins could not find the winning converted try (goal), unlike the IIs.

The Quins' driven mauls and rucks in both defence and attack were good throughout. However 2 penalties each , Dungannon's winning 1-0 try count speaks for itself.

The Ulster League is still well within our grasp.
Quins started with:

15 Mark Kettyle 14 Chris Quinn 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Aaron Deverall 9 Karl Trask 1 Alan Rankin 2 Robert Logan 3 Chris Voisey 4 Grahem Jewhurst 5 Stephen Robinson 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey.
As an USL game, No J&J award this week , but I did think Gillespie had a good game, in a physically tough match.

See you at home next week in AIL II versus Young Munster.

Quins v City of Derry RFC
Ulster Senior League
Deramore Park
Saturday 20th October 2007

Quins elected to attack the scoreboard,at the Black Mountain end, in both senses of the concept, literally and metaphorically.
City of Derry kicked off.
Quins were to score nine tries, seven of which were converted by Slabbert, appropriately enough on a day on which South Africa were to win the World Cup  - beating England by five penalties to two.
McCarey opened and closed the try spree (4, 74); in between Horner recorded a hat-trick (9,13, 43) playing with greater freedom on his inaugural appearance in the centre and thus emulating Cave's pair of hat-tricks earlier in the season.
The other four came from team Captain Colin Atkinson(42), Slabbert himself (51), Rea (68)and BlakeKnox (71).

The half-time score was   Quins  19  Derry  3, I
oane having kicked a penalty( 13).
At no-side the score was:   Quins  59  Derry  3.

The referee, Mark Patton, refereed sympathetically. The only unfortunate occurrence was Rourke leaving the field in the  1st half with a nasty facial injury  - Stephen Robinson subbed on, as did Rory BlakeKnox (for McLoughlin on his Senior return after injury). Later Karl Trask and Conor Keown subbed on; for the final period BlakeKnox moved to 10 and Pyper to 13.
This excellent team performance exuded sparkle as at training on Thursday. Logan's throwing-in was excellent  - as was the lineout jumping of, notably, McComb and McCarey.
Wardy will have been well pleased with today's result.

See you at Merrion Road, Dublin, next week for our opening AIL II League match versus Wanderers in our vital campaign to regain Division I status.

Quins started with:
15 Willem Slabbert 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Thomas Horner 12 Shane Stewart 11 Simon Rea 10 Keith Pyper 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Mark McGrath 2 Robert Logan 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson( C) 8 Chris McCarey.

Quins v Rainey
Ulster Senior League
29th September 2007
Deramore Park

Quins elected to play East to West, with the Clubhouse behind them.Rainey kicked off. Quins scored 9 tries: McComb(4),Ward(23),Cave(19, 36, 82),Slabbert(44, 49), Kettyle(53), McCarey(57). Slabbert converted six and hit a penalty(27). For Rainey, Mike Glancy, an ex-Quin, scored two penalties (32/40) and a goal at 73. Hence the half-time score was:  Quins 29 Raine6, while the full-time score was:  Quins 60 Rainey 13.

Six Quins' players were cautioned, two including yellow cards. A similar outcome applied to Rainey 7.After halftime, Rory Blake Knox subbed for Slabbert and  Shane Stewart for Pyper - both due to injury.

Quins starting team was:

15 Willem Slabbert 14 Mark Kettyle 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Simon Rea 10 Thomas Horner 9 Karl Trask 8 Chris McCarey(C)7 Alasdair Heatlie 6 Andrew Ward 5 Neil McComb 4 Stephen Robinson 3 Craig Voisey 2 Robert Logan 1 Alan Rankin

Other subs not used were Mark McGrath,Johnny Morgan and Andrew McKeen.

The handling was top-class, the back-row tackled like demons - notably Heatlie, lineouts reflected Thursday practice, scrums were solid against a heavy Rainey pack and rucking  and mauling were good.

See you at Liam Fitzgerald Park next Saturday in the AI Cup

 Banbridge v Quins
Ulster Senior League
Saturday 22nd September 2007
Rifle Park

Banbridge elected to play with the strong Southerly wind towards the Clubhouse.
Quins kicked off.
Quins scored seven tries by Cave (22, 40, 71),Slabbert (30, 75), Robinson (63) and Kettyle(90)  -  :for notation see 15 Sept report.
A hat-trick by Cave and a brace for Slabbert! But a special word for Robinson:he scored 3 tries for the  2nds (1pm KO) then subbed on for Keown, only to sprint under the posts from 40 m!
Horner(4) and Slabbert(2)converted all but one of the seven. The Banbridge penalties came at 26 and 42.
Hence the halftime score was:
Banbridge 6 Quins 21.
while the full-time score was
Banbridge 6 Quins 47.
So 4 wins from 4 matches by last year's unbeaten Champions. First-half subs were Karl Trask for Kirkwood,Steven Beattie for Voisey and Robert Logan for Philpott. Second-half subs were Alasdair Heatlie for Gillespie and Stephen Robinson for Keown. The latter led to  uncontested scrums as the 2 front-row subs had already been used.
I thought finesse and panache were very evident in our back play:terms I would normally reserve for those great tennis players Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer. The handling at pace
with the strong wind, combined with the timing of the pass to draw the defence, was top class. Of course Cave and Kettyle, both Ulster players were making their first appearance of the season, at Club level. So too was Philpott who unfort unately had to leave the field at an early stage. Also unfortunately, Rourke was yellow-carded after 69 mins for raking. A similar punishment did not obtain for the Bridge player , on the right wing in their 22, who tackled
a Quins player without the ball.
However full marks to Bridge for their mauling and rucking, and to Quins for their resolute defence. This was an excellent team performance.

We look forward to Rainey at home in the Ulster League on 29th Sept and Thomond away in the All-Ireland Cup on 6 Oct.

The Quins starting team was:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Willem Slabbert 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Simon Rea 10 Thomas Horner 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Conor Keown 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Chris McCarey

Quins v Ballynahinch
Ulster Senior League
Saturday 15th September 2007
Deramore Park

Ballynahinch elected to play with the Westerly veering South-westerly wind . It often gusted strongly . Accordingly long touches were achieved on the North touchline.

Quins kicked off.

Hinch scored tries by J.Graham (10) and Megaw (79), Soper converted the first.

In between Quins  scored 5 tries,by Ward (14),McCarey ( 18), Blake Knox(24, 51) and Horner( 66), with all integers in minutes.
Horner converted the 1st & 4th, Slabbert the 5th , the latter also kicked a penalty(64)

The half and full-time scores were therefore:
Quins 17  Ballynahinch    7
          34                      12
So 3 wins from 3 matches for the reigning Ulster League Champions
Performance, perseverance, and personnel were to the fore.
Ward brought all his power, strength, experience and knowledge in his first full game this season, winning many important turnovers.
McComb and McCarey excelled in the lineoutswith good back up from Wardy and Rourke ( welcome back from bridge-building).
Rea back from holiday, had a terrific run leading up to the Quin's 5th try. Gillespie tackled well and horner brought renewed concentration and composure.
Perhaps still too many turnoverswhile a little more covering would have saved both B'Hinch tries, noteably tthe 2nd.
Conor Keown (16) ,Stephen Robinson (18),Alasdair Heatlie (19) and David Creighton (20) subbed fro McGrath, Rourke, Gillespie and Kirkwood in the 2nd half.
B'Hinch loosehead was yellow-carded in the 2nd half and at least two knock-ons were given for charged-down kicks.

Well done team, coaches and management! Upward and onward.

 The Quins starting team was:

15 Willem Slabbert 14 Rory Blake-Knox 13 Keith Pyper 12 Colin Atkinson (C)11 Simon Rea 10 Thomas Horner 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Mark McGrath 2 Robert Logan
3 Craig Voisey 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Neil McComb 6 Andrew Ward, 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey.

 Quins v Ards
Ulster Senior League
Saturday 8th September 2007
Deramore Park

Quins elected to play East to West against a light breeze and a strong diagonal Sun, thus defending the Clubhouse end. Ards kicked off.

Suffice it to say,Quins were to score 5 tries,by Horner, McComb, Pyper, McComb and Jewhurst at 15, 29, 34, 58 and 62 minutes respectively, with Horner converting McComb's brace of tries and a penalty on the stroke of halftime.

In the first half, and following a hamstring tweak, Stewart was replaced by Stephen Robinson(20) with Atkinson moving to the centre.

In the second half,Conor Keown(16), Andy Ward(19) and Mike Willis (18 )replaced McGrath, Heatlie and Jewhurst respectively.

Old friends AJ Derwin and Cois Beukes played for Ards. The latter , unfortunately, received a neck injury after 66 minutes, so the game was curtailed accordingly. We are glad to hear Cois is making a good recovery.

So two Ulster League wins (we had no match on the 24th Aug) from 2 matches:

Quins 32   Ards 3 ( AJ Derwin having kicked a penalty at 3 minutes.)

The Quins starting line-up was:

15 Willem Slabbert 14 Rory Blake-Knox 13 Keith Pyper 12 Shane Stewart 11 Maurice Field 10 Thomas Horner 9 Karl Trask 1 Mark McGrath 2 Robert Logan
3 Craig Voisey 4 Graham Jewhurst 5 Neil McComb 6 Alasdair Heatlie 7 Colin Atkinson(Capt) 8 Chris McCarey.

As in the Thursday night training sessions much has continued to improve:especially lineouts (good to have the Club Captain Chris McCarey back) and the achievement notably in the truncated second half, of more continuity and fluency.

Looking to Ballynahinch at home next Saturday in the Ulster League, punting(finding touch from inside the 22 or not finding it outside the 22)requires some attention, as does turnovers at the ruck. I was impressed by Slabbert  and Pyper
and indeed the pack in general. McGrath did well in his first outing at this level.
But this was a good team performance on the inevitable upwards and onwards learning curve.Well done, men. Keep at it!

PS Many thanks to Emma for covering last week's game at the Dub,while I attended my son Mark's wedding.

 Queens v Quins
Ulster Senior League
1st September 2007
Upper Malone

Harlequins began the match facing towards the hockey pitches of the Dub and playing with a strong breeze at their backs. Proceedings began well with a tricky high kick well received in the backs, a clever break from Colin Atkinson was offloaded and powerfully finished under the posts by Keith Pyper on 3 minutes. The conversion was successful by Thomas Horner - on his welcome return to the fold. 0-7 to Quins.

The play went a little astray from here and Quins looked as though they would be punished following a penalty for not releasing. However their fullback's kick fell short of the distance and the score line remained.

There were nervous seconds as scrumhalf Karl Trask’s kick was charged down and Queens put in a very composed and huge kick to the corner with a left boot.Quins fortunately won a penalty in the resulting lineout and Horner managed to clear back to midway.

Queens showed a determination to throw the ball around as they played against the wind  - that Harlequins never really utilized to their benefit during the entire half. This tactic served the students well as they carved through several tackles in the midfield for a good score on 15 minutes. This was duly converted score 7-7.

The next period of play was fairly scrappy and indicative of a new side playing their first game together. Line-outs were not functioning and handling errors prevailed but Quins eventually won a penalty and another 3 points on the board taking the score to 7-10.

Play remained disjointed and following a high tackle on Willem Slabbert, Quins gained another 3 points from Horner’s penalty kick. Queens missed their opportunity to add 3 before the break with a missed kick at goal shortly afterwards.

HT score 7-13

The sideways wind and rain began at the resumtion of the match and Queens, using the wind to their advantage, now  scored a penalty 5 minutes into the second half taking the score to the narrow margin of 10-13. 7 minutes later after some better work by the pack Andrew Gillespie touched down and the conversion made for a more comfortable 10-20 scoreline.

Number 8 Stephen Robinson and scrumhalf Trask were replaced by new recruit Alisdair Heatlie and David Creighton.

Quins luck appeared to be improving as the sun returned and a powerful break and run in by Shane Stewart produced an unconverted tally to make the score 10-25 on 60 minutes.

Following some fraught activity Queens suffered the loss of their scrumhalf to the sin bin and Atkinson received a final warning and a penalty against him.

Harlequins remained in the lead 13-25.

Impressive phases were rewarded by a penalty now for Queens closing the gap again to 16-25.

With 10 minutes remaining Graham Jewhurst took to the field from the bench relieving Michael Willis.

With the weather becoming increasingly inclement, errors, including missed touchline kicks, knock-ons underthe  high ball, a yellow card and poor tackling went against Harlequins.

A rusty performance in all but not entirely unexpected for such an unfamiliar team at the outset of the season.

FT score remained 16-25.

Special mention must go the "Director of Media" who caused the crowd much nervousness balanced on an empty wheelie bin balancing the camera and an umbrella following the request for a preferable elevated position!

Welcome back to all and see you at home next weeks versus Ards.

First Trust Ulster Senior Cup Final

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Dungannon
Ravenhill, Friday 4th May 2007, 7.30pm

On a beautiful Summer evening, Dungannon elected to face the clock-end .Quins kicked off. Suffice it to say, Dungannon's Scott kicked five penalties at 10, 14, 30, 61 and 75 minutes and converted a try by sub Kirkpatrick at 23 minutes. At the very end, sub Magee added an unconverted try at 79 minutes.

Quins' response was an excellent try by Cave at 41 minutes on the stroke of halftime, converted by Pyper who kicked a penalty at 58 minutes. Thus the halftime score was 16-7 to Dungannon and the final score was: Dungannon 27 Quins 10. Following Pyper's penalty we lagged briefly by only one score:16-10.

In the second half, Creighton, Robinson and McLoughlin subbed on, as did Spence and Knipe as well as the try scorers for Dungannon. Frankly, like Man United on Wednesday, this our 33rd match of the season was one too many, especially given the unreasonable constraints placed on us by the Ulster Branch. Nevertheless congratulations are due to the new Champions who were, on the day, the better team.

It gives me much pleasure in my 30th report of the season to thank a number of people: Firstly, Bertie O'Neill our active trustee for his support in photography and access to the website, along with Ken Graham and Graham McCluggage. Secondly, Conor Keown, our Team Manager for all his hard work and cooperation - his and my boss was Norman Johnston, Honorary Secretary GBHRFC - the three of us only met formally once, in the Bot, otherwise simply communicated: Norman and his team did a fantastic job on the World U19s for which Grafton Arena was a major venue.
Moreover, without sponsorship, we would be a beaten docket and here we must thank Alan McKelvey (Marketing Chair)and James Kilbane (Grafton Recruitment and our top Sponsor).

Finally, I want to congratulate our president Ronnie Gregg and his charming partner Hilary for a truly memorable season of wit and industry and to congratulate, and commiserate with Wardy, Solly and Maurice on a tantalising season in which we both plumbed the depths of despair and the ecstasies of success.

It was a tight finish to a long season, being relegated by just one penalty goal, in the final minutes of the final game, at UCD on the 21st April. Here's to rejuvenation next season (!) as First Trust Ulster Senior League Champions.

Quins fielded:
15 Mark Ketttyle 14 Johnny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Keith Pyper 11 Simon Rea 10 Rory Blake-Knox 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 Alan Rankin 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Graham Jewhurst 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson (C) 8 Andrew Gillespie

 First Trust Ulster Senior League
Grafton Belfast Harlequins
v

Dungannon
Grafton Arena, Deramore Park

Saturday 28th April 2007

In this Ulster League Decider, the light, sometimes-stiffening breeze blew from the Clubhouse to the Black Mountain. Quins elected to play with it and the Duns kicked off. Suffice it to say, Pyper kicked 3 penalties on 11,40 and 45 minutes, sub Boyd (for Blake-Knox) scoring an unconverted try at 59 minutes. Either side of the latter, the Duns scored 2 converted tries at 51 and 62 minutes, to leave the score going into the fourth quarter at: Quins 14 D'gannon 14, which would have sufficed for the outright Championship.
However Wardy, coming on for the injured Minnis at 60 minutes, scored the winning try off a driven maul at 67 minutes.
Final score: Quins 19 D'gannon 14.
This is not to say that we didn't have to defend: we did have to so defend manfully right to the end.
Having won all 11 Ulster League matches, Grafton Belfast Harlequins secured the outright Championship and title of First Trust Ulster League Champions, season 2006/7. (It is most appropriate to remember the contribution that Chris McCarey made in scoring 15 tries in the first 10 games! Super!)
Presumably since the actual trophy appears to have been at the Ulster Branch, it will be presented at the First Trust Senior Cup Final at Ravenhill next Friday evening when once again our opponents will be Dungannon.
Incidentally I thought our rucking was excellent and that the five Senior players showed admirable leadership: Atkinson, Lowe, Pyper, Rourke and Ward. Nevertheless many of the less experienced players excelled. We did use the breeze well in the first quarter but perhaps not in the second. The Duns certainly did in the second half.

All the very best to Wardy, Maurice and the team/squad next Friday evening.

Quins fielded:
15 Jonny Lowe 14 Freddie Cuttle 13 Colin Atkinson(C) 12 Keith Pyper 11 Simon Rea 10 Rory Blake-Knox 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Alan Rankin 2 Ben Hanvey 3 Johnny Morgan 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Peter Scott 6 Stephen Minnis 7 David Johnston 8 Stephen Robinson.
Subs were: 16 Johnny English 17 Rab Logan 18 Andrew Ward 19 RobbieBoyd 20 Brian Howard

Semi-Final Ulster Senior Cup

Grafton Belfast Harlequins
v
Ballymena

Grafton Arena ,
Friday 9th March 2007 , 7.30pm

Quins fielded:
15 Jonny Lowe 14 Gavin McLoughlin 13 Mike McKeever 12 Keith Pyper (Club C) 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Rory Blake-Knox 9 Roger Kirkwood 1 Alan Rankin 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward (VC) 7 Colin Atkinson(C) 8 Stephen Robinson
B'mena fielded:
15 Paul Campbell 14 Alan Smyth 13 Peter Buclina 12 Scott Young 11 Andrew Maxwell 10 Chris Smith 9 Ross Connor 1 Pat Steenkemp 2 Matt Harshaw 3 Andrew Ferguson 4 Ian Caldwell 5 Bob Young(C) 6 Andy Graham 7 Neil McMillan 8 Chris Henry

On a beautiful Spring evening, Quins elected as Champions to defend the Clubhouse end. B'mena kicked off.
In the first half, Quins scored at 10, 22 and 32 mins: 2 Pyper penalties either side of a great Andress try, converted by Pyper. B'mena's Maxwell scored a try at 5 mins and Connor kicked a penalty at 32 mins, to leave the half-time score at Quins 13 B'mena 8.
In the second half, Kirkwood's excellent try under the posts at 14 mins interspersed with 2 penalties by Pyper at 10 and 42 mins. Of course Pyper converted under the posts. B'mena's only riposte was a try at 25 mins off a series of rucks and mauls during which Philpott was unfortunate to be yellow-carded.
At no side, 45 mins into the half, the final score was thus: Quins 26 B'mena 13.

And so to the Final as defending Champions next weekend.

Scrums were fantastic though one or two lineouts were wayward. It was good to see our elan / verve / sharpness / fire  / fizz returned. A week ago on Thursday evening before the fateful Lansdowne match I thought we looked tired and jaded. It was good to have Philpott and McKenzie back, but of course Kettyle, Marshall and McCarey were all injured and Johnston was with the Ireland U19's.

This, however, gives me a chance to congratulate all the Quins' men on their successes: Simon and Rory Best playing v Scotland today, Neil on the bench; Tommy Bowe and Roger Wilson in the Ireland squad; and Darren Cave (try) and Niall O’Connor (conversion) involved in Ireland's U20's Triple Crown win over Scotland contemporaneously with our match above.
I thought our outstanding players, last night, were  -  and appropriately enough , Colin Atkinson (1st XV Captain), Keith Pyper (Club Captain) and Andy Ward (1st XV Vice- Captain).
But many, many others sparkled, not least Rankin and Robinson on, I think, their first starts. McLoughlin's counter run set up the great first try! The mid-field triangle tackled like demons. Good luck in the final v Dungannon!

Congratulations Solly!

Quins: 26 (Andress 1T, Kirkwood 1T, Pyper 2C, 4P)

Ulster Senior Cup Quarter Final
Grafton Belfast Harlequins
v
Rainey
Deramore, 7.30pm, Friday 23rd February 2007

The nice sprinkling of supporters were greeted by a crisp, starry but windless night. The earlier rain left the pich moist but in excellent condition.
Quins were missing Darren Cave and Niall O'Connor  - who were in Athlone with the Irish U-20s side. Paul Marshall, Stuart Philpott and Paul McKenzie were not released by Ulster. With Rory Blake-Knox injured, and Chris MCartey and Lewis Stevenson  given a well deserved rest, a number of additional changes were made. An interesting newcomer was the tall and athletic right-wing Erin Wagner, while Sparky's appearance at fly-half took him back to his school days - metaphorically only!
Former Quin Michael Glancy's unfortunate bout of 'flu, saw him drop out of the Rainey side.

The Kick-Off saw Quins defending the Clubhouse end and they went straight onto the attack. Rainey survived this early pressure, and the game began to level out with  both sides  guilty of multiple handling errors. However, tries by Kettyle and Gillespie, neither converetd by Pyper, saw Quins reach half-time comfortably 10 - 0 up.
Quins 10 - Rainey 0.
The beginning of the second half saw Rainey on the attack, but their attempts at penalties were no more successful than Pypes'!
Quins began to exert their dominance and Erin Wagner blasted his way past some would-be tacklers to score an excellent try in the corner. Pypes this time decided to convert !
Quins 17 - Rainey 0.
With the Quins pack now dominaant, the all-action John Andress barn-stormed his way over on the right for an excellent try. Pypes converted.
Quins 24 - Rainey 0.
Towards the end, a neat break by Roger Kirkwood and a beautifully slipped pass from Simon Rea, saw Erin Wagner presented with another opportunity.  This he firmly grasped with a driving run which agan saw tacklers left in his wake as he  "mowed" his way towards and over the line!
With the referee getting cold, this proved to be the final score!
Quins 29- Rainey 0.
(Kettyle 1T, Gillespie 1T, Andress 1T, Wagner  2T, Pyper 2C)

Quins:
Jonny Lowe, Erin Wagner, Simon Rea, Keith Pyper, Gavin McClaughlin, Mark Kettyle, Roger Kirkwood, John Andress, Ben Hanvey, Niall Conlon (Alan Rankin), Gareth Rourke, Mike Graham, Colin Atkinson, Andy Ward, Andrew Gillespie (David Johnston).

P.S. The only major blow last night, was the announcement by the Prof that his lap-top computer was seriously off-colour and was due to be taken into the PC hospital. However don't worry fans , he (and the computer) should be back in fine form next week!

 First Trust Ulster Senior League
Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Malone
30th December 2006 , Deramore, 2-30pm.

Quins elected to play West to East; Malone kicked off. After 1 min O'Connor with an extra 10m for non-retreating, kicked a 35m penalty to give Quins an early lead. After 8 mins Malone had a penalty reversed and from the excellent mauled lineout, Graham scored a try. O'Connor converted. Coulter kicked a penalty for Malone to give:
Quins 10 Malone 3.
After 15 mins, McClaughlin made a great break from a Quins lineout on halfway, linked with Ward who put Atkinson in, just to the left of the posts. O'Connor converted. This was Atky's first competitive match this season: welcome back! This was probably the best of our 6 tries.
Quins 17 Malone 3.
After 33 mins Quins were awarded a penalty for Malone for not binding and from the ensuing mauled lineout, Ward was probably at the bottom of the pile, with Graham, to score another pushover-try. O'Connor converted:
Quins 24 Malone 3 which was the halftime score.
In the 2nd half the game descended into the doldrums. But with the return of Stevenson after a yellow card for allegedly de-robing a Malone player, Andress scored a good try on 20 mins:
Quins 29 Malone 3.
On 30 mins a great break by O'Connor led to another excellent try by one of our subs: Gareth Rourke for Graham. Surprisingly both assistant referees signalled the conversion only to be over-ruled by referee David Armstrong:
Quins 34 Malone 3.
Finally, following a Quins' lineout, scrum, ruck and maul, Philpott completed the scoring on the stroke of no-side:
FINAL SCORE: Quins 39 Malone 3.

On this lovely day (what a contrast with the New Year's Eve gale force winds) in the 2nd half other Quins' subs were Robert Logan for Rankin with Andress moving to loose-head and Stephen Robinson for McCarey (injured). Then Atkinson moved to flanker with Ward moving to No.8.Gavin McLoughlin came on at No.11 with McClaughlin moving to centre. Pyper also subbed on.

Originally Quins had fielded:
15 Mark kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Darren Cave 12 Colin Atkinson(C) !! Johnny McClaughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Alan Rankin 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Mike Graham 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Ward(VC) 7 Andew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey.

Malone had fielded:
15 J Devitt 14 John Anderson 13 J Amos 12 M McCrea 11 J Moutray 10 Tom Horner 9 Phil Coulter 1 R Bartley 2 S Bailie 3 R Fannin 4 D Cobain 5 D Heron 6 D Walsh 7 D Bradford 8 C Pyper.
They too brought on several subs.

A profuse word of apology: The squad trained on Boxing Day, not Christmas Day!
On top of normal training the squad trains on New Year's Day at 2pm! A very warm welcome to Alan Solomons who has been appointed to advise Andy Ward (thus allowing him to concentrate on the playing side) and the coaching team.
We look forward to welcoming Dungannon next Saturday at 2-30pm,to Grafton Arena for our AIB/AIL I match.
Over the recent 2 Ulster League matches (Instonians and Malone) I have been impressed by Ward, Lowe, Philpott and O'Connor. This is not to say others are slacking! So we have won 10 out of 10 Ulster matches and have only to play Dungannon in a rearranged match to be sure of at least a share of the Ulster League Trophy, with Ballymena. A draw or a win would give us the Trophy outright !irrespective of other outcomes/events. Well done everyone!

Grafton Belfast Harlequins v Instonians at
Shaw's Bridge 2.30pm 23rd December 2006,

Quins elected to play west to east; Inst kicked off. After 3 mins O'Connor kicked a penalty. After 12 mins Lowe scored a well worked try following an excellent grubber by O'Connor who duly converted. After 25 mins McMurray for Inst scored and converted an excellent try under the posts. At 31 mins Gillespie scored an unconverted try after a Inst turned-over and mauled lineout. After a sustained attack, left then right, McLoughlin scored an unconverted try for Quins on the stroke of halftime: Quins 20 Inst 7. Seven mins into the 2nd half O'Connor kicked a penalty and after seventeen Lowe scored his second try, this time unconverted, following a good mauled lineout: Quins 28 Inst 7.
After 40 mins Quins were awarded a penalty try, converted by O'Connor, for Inst deliberately kicking the ball out of our solid, square scrum. At 45 mins Inst fumbled and Andress got in for Quins' 6th try.
Final score was Quins 40 Inst 7.

Quins fielded:
15 Mark Kettyle 14 Jonny Lowe 13 Simon Rea 12 Darren Cave 11 Gavin McLoughlin 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Paul Marshall 1 Niall Conlon 2 Stuart Philpott 3 John Andress 4 Mike Graham 5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andy Ward(C) 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey

In the 2nd half Gareth Rourke came on for Graham, Robert Logan for Philpott and Keith Pyper for McLoughlin with Rea moving to the left wing.
Inst. fielded:
15 Adam Craig 14 Gavin Harper 13 Mark Broome 12 Jamie Scott 11 Andrew Hassard 10 Owen McMurray 9 David O'Hara 1 Neill Simpson 2 Wilbur Leacock 3 Garry Mitchell 4 Kenny Morton (C) 5 Mark Wilson 6 Adam Telford 7 Jamie Chapman 8 Darren Lyttle
Two valuable League points and more importantly definite signs of progression and improvement.

City of Derry v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

Result - City of Derry 7 Grafton Belfast Harlequins 22

 Quins started with:

15 Mark Kettyle14 Johnny Lowe 13 Joe Reihana 12 Darren Cave 11 Paul McKenzie 10 Niall O'Connor 9 Roger Kirkwood 8 Stephen Robinson 7 Rob Devonshire 6 Stephen Minnis 5 Graham Jewhurst 4 Mike Graham 3 Brendan Lynch 2 Ben Hanvey 1 Niall Conlon

Derry fielded:
1 E Gienn 2 S Duffy 3 Sam Duffy 4 B Prue5 C Cooper 6 M Gough 7 M Walker 8 S Ferguson 9 D Brown 10 A Loasa 11 S Sims 12 G Mitchell 13 G Boyle 14 K Dunn 15 R Campbell.

Following a downpour, the pitch was very heavy and slippy and Quins elected to face a strong wind in the first half, playing left to right looking from the Clubhouse.
Accordingly the half time score was  7 -3 in favour of Derry.

Following a try by Brown after 9mins, converted by S. Duffy and a penalty by O'Connor on the 22m Line in front of the posts in time added on.

Quins turned round in confident expectation.
At 13 mins Kettle scored under the posts converted by Keith Pyper on for O'Conner.

On 25 mins Devonshire secured a try on the left and finally Rourke went on a rampaging run to crash over to the right of the posts at 42 mins.
The last was converted by Pyper making the final score Derry 7 Quins 22

Other subs for Quins had been McLoughlin on for Reihana with McKenzie  moving to the centre, Rourke on for Minnis with Jewhurst moving to flanker and Rankin for Conlon with Lynch moving to loosehead.

For Derry -Donaghy had come on for Boyle with Gough moving to the wingand Balfour for Glenn.

This was a much improved performance by Quins and augurs well for the match against Dolphin in the AIB/AIL Division 1 home match at Deramore next week. KO 2:30pm.

The double-miss move, outhalf to fullback were highly effective in the 2nd half.
The 4 forwards up from the 2nds performed admirably and DC our Coaching Coordinator judged the substitutions to perfection.

A word of praise for Derry whose ball retention in the 2nd half against a strong wind, in long phases of rucks and carries, was excellent.

For Quins scrums and lineouts were fine and I particularily liked Hanvey's breaks in the looseand Robinson's driving froward in the rucks to secure the put-in.
McKenzie and Kettyle excelled as usual,  but I nominate Stephen Minnis as our man of the match, for his endeavour in his first 1st XV match, since injury.

The form is 8 out of 8 wins in the Ulster League now requires to be  translated into a  5-points win next week.

See you next Saturday

Hatricks', Magherafelt: Ulster League: 7 October 2006:
Rainey Old Boys v Grafton Belfast Harlequins

Quins started with:

15 Gavin McLaughlin 14 Johnny Lowe 13 Joe Reihana 12 Keith Pyper 11 Mike McKeever 10 Niall O'Connor
9 Roger Kirkwood 8 Chris McCarey(C) 7 Rob Devonshire 6 Andrew Gillespie 5 Graham Jewhurst 4 Gareth Rourke 3 Brendan Lynch 2 Stuart Philpott 1 Conor Keown

RESULT: Rainey 22 Harlequins 36

Quins won the toss and crucially asked Rainey to kick-off with the wind: a significant factor throughout.

After 4 mins Rainey were 3 points up, courtesy of a penalty by Mike Glancy playing against his old Club. An excellent try at 23 mins by McKeever on the left wing gave Quins a 7-3 lead, with O'Connor converting. Remember this was against a stiff breeze.

After 33 mins loose-head prop Keown was yellow-carded. for ball-killing.
Johnny Morgan came on to prop and Gillespie went off.

At 36 mins Rainey scored an excellent try from a ruck, converted by Glancy, to give Rainey a deserved 10-7 lead at halftime, after which an early Quins penalty by O'Connor pulled it back to 10-10.

Keown and Gillespie came back on after 13 minutes including 3 mins time added on to the first half. After 6 mins of the 2nd half, Philpott crossed for another excellent try converted by O'Connor: Rainey 10 Quins 17.
Game on!

At 11 mins Lowe coming infield off his wing and round the open-side of the scrum, scored a brilliant individual try from a jinking run, again converted by our outhalf: Rainey 10 Quins 24. This was to prove to be the winning score.

Rainey replied within 5 mins of the restart, after some sparkling handling, with a scintillating try under the posts: 17-24. This was proving to be a very entertaining game, despite the cold wind.

At 18 mins Quins stretched their ascendancy with an opportunistic try by Kirkwood who fairly scampered into the left-hand corner, after the Rainey scrum-half had been 'spoilt'. O'Connor's kick went one foot to the left of the posts. But 17-29 was more comfortable with the wind strengthening in Quins' favour.

But back came Rainey at 22 mins with a magnificent try from a driving maul off a line-out, too far out to be converted: 22-29:WOW!

Significantly, at 28 mins Quins steal a Rainey lineout and Kirkwood sprinted 40 metres. Pressure from Quins including sheer strength in the mauls and rucks, pins Rainey on their 5m line, on the farside from the Pavilion.

In the last 10 mins, Ben Hanvey and Robbie Sloan replace Philpott and Reihana, with McKeever moving into the centre. Both injuries. Rainey needed only a converted try to tie the game. But it was not to be. With 43 mins on the clock, McLaughlin attacked at pace down the right wing. A perfect pass put Lowe at pace over the line and round under the posts. O'Connor converted and Quins had won a brilliant contest:

RAINEY 22 HARLEQUINS 36,
Giving Quins an unbeaten but not unshakeable lead at the top of theUlster League with 14 out of 14 points, Dungannon having lost to Ballymena last week and whom we still have to play in a to-be-arranged
match. Ironically both Rainey (Galway Corinthians) and Quins (Galwegians) will both be in Galway next Saturday 14th October for their respective first All-Ireland League matches of the season.

My man of the match is fullback Gavin McLaughlin, for his all-round play, especially in attack with precision and with excellent ball-handling skills at pace, notably drawing a man (or two) and putting his outside player
in space. But well done Johnny Lowe with a brace of tries on his return from injury. And well done up front in the pack in general.

Prof

PS 1. Excellent win for the 2nds and their coach DC Gillespie:
Rainey II 0 Quins II 46.
Rory Blake-Knox (10) and David Irwin (8) (welcome back) were impressive.

PS 2. Glad to see all enjoyed themselves at Posh 'n Pink last week: Great photos; and many thanks Bertie for an excellent report on the Banbridge game, during my perforce absence in Kalamazoo.

PS3 As an ex-Rainey man (1950's) I deny any bias in the above report. Forgive me for a few mixed units and a few mixed tenses: call it 'journalese'.

PS4 Things I liked in this match included:
Gillespie chipping into the far corner to keep the pressure on;
McKeever coming off his wing to scrummage at right flanker when we were down to 14 men;
Keown sticking up for himself against Rainey

Well done all-round!

Ulster Senior League: QUINS 64 - Banbridge 0

The faithful supporters were greeted by torrential rain as they entered a grey and climatically sodden Deramore. However just before the kick-off, the rain had miraculously ceased -- but worryingly, remained in the background.

Quins re-called Graham Jewhurst in place of the injured Lewis Stevenson, and saw Niall O’Connor named on the bench for the first time this season after returning from U20 duties.

Our Gavin was marked by former Lions wing Tyrone Howe. (a great player and lovely person!).
Quins played from the Pavilion end with the wind.

The game had hardly warmed up when Chris McCarey (YES – Chris McCarey!) went over after some aggressive Quins forward play. Pypes converted to give Quins a welcome 7-0 early lead.

Just after the kick-off Rory B-K put in an most excellent line kick to put Quins in the Banbridge 22. Following an excellent break by Gavin McLaughlin, Paul Marshall broke from a ruck under the B‘bridge post where he espied the speedy Brendan Lynch unmarked. Brendan thrillingly stumbled over from 15meters to score an excellent supporting try. Pypes, still in shock at seeing this outstandingly great athletic feat, made a major Horlicks of the conversion attempt. Quins lead 12-0.

Shortly later, a lineout of "keystonesque" proportions, Gareth Rourke picked up the loose ball and drove on titanically in mid field. A series of hands took the ball on, before the astute Paul McKenzie put Andrew Gillespie in unopposed under the posts. Pypes conversion left the score at 19-0.

Almost immediately after this, Banbridge had an opportunity to reduce the lead with a penalty on the 22 under the Quins post. This was surprisingly, and disastrously, missed but the game levelled out for the next 10 minutes. The following 5 minutes saw Quins add 28 points!

Firstly, Paul Marshall put Quins back on the score sheet after 32 minutes with an excellent try half way out on the right. Pypes converted to make the score 26-0.

On 34 minutes, a hack through and a disastrous Bridge miss field, saw Paul McKenzie drift in under the posts. . Pypes’ conversion left the score at 33-0.

Within a few minutes, Paul McKenzie, who was terrifying the Bridge defence every time he got the ball, ran clear and gave a beautiful inside pass to Andrew Gillespie to score under the posts. Pipes converts to make the score 40-0.

Finally, Gavin McLaughlin intercepted on the half way line and his outstanding running finishing with Chris McCarey scoring in the right hand corner. Pypes’ conversion brought the half time core to 47-0.

HALF TIME: 47-00

The second half with Quins playing against the wind evidence of the Quins dominance over the next20 minutes – the highlight being a dynamic steal by Graham Jewhurst from a Bridge line-out and his resulting bull-dozing 20 meter break.
At 20 minutes, Niall O’Connor donned a Quins jersey for the first time. (replacing the resolute and most effective Rory Blake-Knox - Good game Rory!)

Then, a sparkling break by Joe Reihana led to Pypes spectacularly diving over in the corner (from at least 10 yards!). An injury to the B'Bridge scrum half saw a delay before Pypes swatted the corner flag conversion over – 52-0.

After a further 5 minutes, another McLaughlin break lead to an excellent McKenzie try, which even Pypes was unable to convert.

Rain then re-commenced as Robbie Sloan, David Irwin (YES – that David Irwin!), and new hooker Robbie Logan all came on as replacements.
With 5 minutes to go, Paul McKenzie scored his 4th try by completingly bamboozling the opposition (and some fellow Quins) to score under the posts - one of the best tries of the season.

Shortly afterwards – with apparently no injury time! – the referee blew for full time.

Reflection saw Quins’ driving support play, both forwards and backs, as one of the main satisfaction points. The loose play after the break could be put down to a reduction in Quins motivation, but also to a greater determination from B'Bridge to stop the Quins ball possession. Our back play was superb.

Our lineouts were a dominant factor– well done Rourkey and Jewey. Support play was magnificent.
Led by Gavin and Pypes, we ran at the opposition – both with and without the ball – a vital factor.

Banbridge never gave up – neither did we!

So, who was "man of the match"?
Everyone was brill! Rourky, Gav, Paul Mac, Chris, Brendy, and Paul M were exceptional.

Gav and Paul McK jump out , – but for his final try (and I await it to be bettered - absolutely brilliant), - Paul McKenzie is Man of the Match.

6 Andrew Gillespie 5 Lewis Stevenson 4 Stephen Robinson
3 Brendan Lynch 2 Stuart Philpott 1 Niall Conlon

By halftime Quins led 17-3, following 3 tries (McLaughlin 7 mins, McCarey 25 mins, Stevenson 30 mins) with one converted by Pyper and a 'Hinch penalty at 21 mins. The significant factor in the 1st half was continual rain, after our 1st try. Our scrums were fine; lineouts were excellent throughout and Philpott's throwing-in was immaculate, reflecting the practice on Thursday evening. It is amazing the height at which the ball is caught in the modern game: some 13 feet above ground?
From the lineouts, our driving mauls were well constructed and very
effective.

In each half we declined penalties in front of the posts: fair enough in the UL.

In the 2nd half, tries were scored by Gillespie (10 mins), Marshall (24 mins) and Kettyle (33 mins) with the first two converted by Pyper.' Hinch scored an excellent try by way of riposte in time added on, to leave the final score: Ballynahinch 10 Harlequins 36.

Quins now lead the UL with 10 out of 10 League points.

Just before the 4th try,' Hinch No.8 was cautioned and yellow-carded.

Roger Kirkwood for Cuttle and Gareth Rourke for Gillespie were our 2nd- half replacements,

Reihana had a great run on the half-hour up the left wing but Kirkwood was well tackled. It was good to see Blake-Knox making some good outside breaks following his return from injury (see 9/9 report).

So to man/men of the match. McCarey, Stevenson, Pyper and Kettyle all fulfilled their previously merited reputations, the last with the scintillating sixth try (Stand-View, please note). Philpott had an excellent and promising game.

However, not merely because each of the three scored a try, I name as joint men of the match: McLaughlin, Gillespie and Marshall for their general expertise and endeavour: the first named particularly in the 1st- half and the last particularly in the 2nd-half against his former Club.
Philip Eadie and Andrew Sproule were two unfielded subs.

Unfortunately our 2's were also away and were tanked 43-8(1pm KO) and our 3's at home in their 1st game, lost 26-29, both v 'Hinch.

A word of congratulations to our famous International referees Simon McDowell who recently refereed the Ladies World Cup Final (NZ v Eng.): no ungentlemanly conduct there. He was appropriately able to join in the craic in the 'Hinch bar having refereed 'Hinch 5s v M'ghan 2s.

PS I shall be on academic business next (long) weekend in Kalamazoo and leave you in the able and exquisite hands of another applied mathematician Dr Bertie (affectionate form of Albert) J.O'Neill for the Banbridge UL home game.

Grafton Belfast Harlequins 17 Ballymena 16

16th September 2006

The Quins team took the field  with Gavin McLaughlin coming in for the injured Johnny Lowe and with Roger Kirkwood taking Gavin's place on the bench

The 1st half lasted 42 mins, with Ballymena 6-3 ahead,2 penalties to 1.This fairly reflected their dominance in set-scrums. Strydom and Pyper were the respective kickers.
The 2nd half lasted 49 mins, during which B'mena suffered a number of injuries and a number of yellow cards and cautions - finishing with 13 men. Quins got a couple of cautions as well. (Under Law 6, if the referee restarts the game, after the award of a penalty try or kick, with a whistle blow, then the offending player has been cautioned.)
In the 2nd half after 9 mins, B'mena were 3-9 up, with another penalty. At 17 mins, they scored a precious, (so it seemed) , try half way out on ther ight .Crucially the conversion was kicked to make it 3-16. However shortly afterwards, Ballymena missed the opportunity to go fiurther ahead when  a comparatively simple penalty was missed.
So as it would transpire with 30 mins to play,Quins needed 2 convertedtries to win,- just like Shannon at home 2 seasons ago. With 6 mins including time to be added on (injuries and time-wasting grossed up), Quins got the all important penalty try - for an early tackle just to the left of and in front of the uprights.Pypes duly converted :
Quins 10 B'mena 16.Game on!
With 2 mins to go, Quins broke out of defence with strong running and interpassing among Kettyle, McKenzie and Pyper. Not to be done out of another try (11 in 4 matches now) McCarey was on Pype's shoulder to score under the posts, with the winning points coming from Pype's boot.

A most exciting match! A turning phase was B'mena temporarily losing 3 of their
front five at various times in the 2nd half. Brendan Lynch also deserves a mention as the scrums solidified  upon his introduction. This also allowed McCarey to pickup at the base in the 2nd half, unlike the 1st. At full time, Marshall wisely having consulted the referee, kickedtransversely into touch!

After some reflective thought in the Deramore traffic-jam after the match, I make Mark Kettyle and  Paul McKenzie my joint  men of the match, for their counter attacking and Gavin McLaughlin wasn't bad either.

9th September 2006
Hamilton Park Landsdowne Road N'ards
Ards 0      Belfast Harlequins  39
McCarey (4T),  Philpot (2T), Mclaughlin (1T), Blakeknox ( 2 con)

Quins started with:
1 Conor Keown 2 Stu Philpott  3 Brendan Lynch,4 Graham Jewhurst  5 Lewis Stevenson 6 Andrew Gillespie 7 Rob Devonshire 8 Chris McCarey (capt) 9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Rory Blake -Knox 11 Paul McKenzie 12 Joe Reihana 13 Mike McKeever 14 Johnny Lowe 15 Gavin Mclaughlin

Ards kicked off with the slope and a tricky, stiff sea-breeze
.
At halftime, quins led17-0 as a result of 3 tries( McCarey 28, Philpott 31,40), one converted by Blake - Knox.

There had been six Ards injuries and it had been nearly half-an - hour before Quins finally breached the try-line.No time was however  added on.

All credit to Ards for some sturdy tackling, especially by their fullback.

In the second-half 4 tries( McCarey 9,20,57, Mclaughlin 24) were scored with ine converted by Blakeknox.
Fortunately, Rory Blake - Knox is fine following a jarring tackle. He was taken on a stretcher to hospital in an ambulance , as a precautionary measure. We wish him well for a speedy recovery. As a result play was interrupted for some 20 minutes.

Bt this stage, Keith Pyper, Robbie Sloan, Gareth Rouke and Ben Hanvey had already replaced McKeever, Kirkwood, Jewhurst and Blakeknox, with Devonshire going to the left wing. Sproule was the only sub not to get a run-out.

Unfortunately Ards 2's could not field a front-row, while Ulster did not allow Quin's prop Niall Conlon to play.Such are the vagaries of ( semi- ) professional rugby union football.

With Maurice Field concentrating , on Thursday evening, on continuity and Wardy taking the 2nd's, it all augurs well for next Saturday at home to Ballymena: after 3 matches, nil points conceded

As for the Man of the Match, although the Captain scored 4 tries bringing his total to 10 in 3 matches, I select Lewis Stevenson  for his lineout work and for generally " putting himself about".
Captain Chris was the man of the match last week.

However it was an excellent all-round team / squad performance

10 M Robinson 11 J Nichol 12 D Marshall 13 M Hooks 14 H McNeice 15 G Taylor

Tries were scored in the 1st half by Conlon, Pyper, McCarey a nd McKeever with 3 conversions by Pyper, while tries in the 2nd half by Pyper(2),McCarey(2) and Devonshire; with 3 conversions by Pyper.

McCarey having scored 6 tries in 2 matches (2 hat-tricks),was my man of the match(as with the web team).
Pyper with 4 tries in 2 matches and twenty one kicked points was last week's MotM.

The match was played in perfect conditions and QUB were in contention for the 1st halfhour. Then the pace and precision of our No.8 and our back five started to tell. The ref who had a good game, blew-up appropriately 5 minutes early. In the 2nd half, Rourke, Blake - Knox, Gillespie and McKeever were replaced by 18 Graham Jewhurst,19 Gavin McLoughlin, 17 Stephen Robinson and 20 Joe Reihana.

Congratulations to our Stand-In captain (No 8)and Club captain (No12) and our excellent coaching staff of Wardy and Maurice. Commiseration to QUB.

One word of caution, our kicking for position needs to be sharpened before the onset of winter weather and the higher we go, the less time we will have for any intricacies. It was good to see some punting practice on Thursday
evening.

Quins2s 20 Larne 1stXV 5
In a friendly pipe opener, our 2nds overcame Larne 1's in the second half, 20pts to 5.The squad per the coaching coordinator DC Gillespie (thanks) was :
A Sproule, A Rankin, M Crothers, W Tang,I Thompson, D Annett, S Robinson,
G Jewhurst, P Creed, H Moore, S Minnis, A McKee and B Howard in the forwards
and R Sloan, R Boyd, Robbie Boyd, G McLaughlin, F Cuttle, H Trimble, O Crossey,
E Wagner and J Bloem in the backs.
Wagner, a former American footballer, scored an excellent try, with 2 handoffs, as he had done the previous week. Well done DC and squad.

See you at Ards next Saturday 9th, 1pm for 2nds and 2.30pm for 1sts.

PS3 Good luck to Colin Atkinson (Aky) for a swift recovery from his injury.

Chambers' Park: 26 August 2006
First Trust Ulster Senior League:

Portadown 0 ,Belfast Harlequins 34
McCarey (3T), Jewhurst (1T), Pyper (1T, 3C,1P)

Quins started with:
1 Conor Keown 2 Ben Hanvey 3 Bren Lynch 4 Gareth Rourke 5 Graham Jewhurst  6 Rob Devonshire 7 Andrew Gillespie 8 Chris McCarey (capt)  9 Roger Kirkwood 10 Rory BlakeKnox 11 Gavin McLaughlin 12 Keith.Pyper 13 Mike McKeever 14  Johnny Lowe 15 Robbie Boyd

Tries were scored by Pypes in the first half and by Jewhurst,  and McCarey(3) in the second. A penalty and three conversions by Pypes completed the scoring.

Portadown were very competitive in the pack but outside they always
looked vulnerable whether in attack or defence. Each side received a
yellow card and one or two cautions.
On a beautiful day (OK one or two showers just to cool the teams down),
errors abounded, especially knock-ons.
Our pack were comfortable, by and large, in scrum, lineout, maul and ruck
and superior fitness told in the last twenty.
At least three subs were used , most notably our new overseas player, Joe Reihana, a tall, strong, rangy centre of class. This made quite a difference in the second half. Nevertheless, for his overall skill, commitment and endeavour I would choose Keith Pyper as our man of the match. Ian Thompson needs an honourable mention. He played a full match for the 2s and then basically a full half for the ones. Nice going Thompo. It was also good to see Ben Hanvey back in action for Quins. Robbie Boyd and Rory Blake-Knox both performed admirably in thier senior competitive debuts. Newly appointed PE teacher at Friends School Lisburn Stephen Robinson also had a run while DJ Creighton rested on the bench.
Portadown did have a fair share of the ball; however our tackling and
backing-up were superior.
One would like to see referees, in general, requiring players on the ground
to roll away from the breakdown: tackle, maul, or ruck!

Considering they just avoided relegation last year, from AIL Division 3,
Portadown were commendably robust, especially given that their 2nds
beat our very youthful 2nds handsomely in the Ulster 2nd XV league by 32 to 24 in a 1pm kick-off / pipeopener. Our 2nds did score 4 excellent tries. However, in conceding 32 points, our defence was found wanting.

PS  I thought Maurice Field had a blinder in goal in the first half
