Saturday 30 October
BHRFC 5s 26 Grosvenor 1s 26
In an effort to keep Jamsie Graham interested I'll try and change the style this week. Aaron cannot win dick of the day despite one dropped ball with the line ahead and another chip ahead with an overlap outside.
Without Dowling, Barney, Craig, Ally or Rob, our back line consisted of Marcus and a load of 6's and juniors I didn't know. The initial thoughts were 'if I don't know them they might be good'. This thought was dispelled quite soon.
With nearly all the ball in the first 20 minutes we should have scored at least twice but for some juggling that Chipperfield would have been proud of. Grosvenor were very well drilled as you would expect from a first 15 and their backs charged up every time, it only took Marcus 70 minutes to work out a response.
In the first half they really only had two attacks, one resulted in a try and the other a penalty from the Grosvenor Captain and No 8 who was their best player by a street. 10-0 at half time despite us having all the ball.
In the second half we decided to change tack and give them all the ball to see what happened. This didn't work either....
Two more soft try’s from their flanker (who ran round every one for one and through Wally for another) and one converted, along with two penalties, one of them huge, made it 26-0 with 15 minutes to go. We can't actually remember both the penalties but assume they had two... With Grosvenor now openly laughing, things looked pretty gloomy.
Finally we worked it out and started to take some inside ball from 10 or chip ahead, thus negating their fast up defense. The younger members of the back line, noticeably Anthony and Owen finally caught up with the fast pace of the mighty fives and made a difference.
Marcus scored in the corner and the converted beautifully, 26-7 with 12 left. Then Grosvenor then started to make their biggest error and aimed every kick off at Chick, who proceeded to leap salmon like and make
20-30 yards before leaving perfect ball for the backs. Virtually from the kick off a couple of phases and Wally scored the best try of his career from 30 metres with only one blatant piece of crossing taking out their defense. Marcus again converted, 26-14with 8 remaining.
This time they kicked to Eddie (nuff said) Scrum Grosvenor.
From another good lineout Marcus chipped ahead and Anthony was through for a score and the crowd was witnessing the greatest comeback since Ali's Rumble in the Jungle. No conversion though... 26-19 with 2 to go.
The last play of the game and Anthony caught a high ball under our posts and suddenly was gone, over half way with Owen outside him, a last ditch scrag and we thought the chance was gone but Dewie was on hand to finish it off under the posts, Marcus converted for an astonishing 26-26 draw.
While this turned out to be a moral victory, there was an hour of this match when we were terrible. Ok a make shift team but the lack of thought at times was appalling. The guys that came in at last minute should be thanked and can't be faulted for their efforts. Dick of the day can't be awarded this week as Aaron said he would drop me if he got it again.
Man of the match had a few nominees, Anthony for his efforts at the end, Marcus was ok and Wally would have got it if it hadn't been for his uncharacteristic missed tackle. Chick had one of his better games but MOM goes to Graham Dewhurst, who in only his third game in a year tackled well and made yards every time as well as scoring the important try.
