Dungannon 29
Quins 0
By Conor Keown
Dungannon weren't in a festive giving mood at Stevenson Park and gained maximum league points in a 4 try biltz, a brace from Stuart McCloskey and one each for Rowan Halsall and Dave Egner. Michael Lawton kicked a penalty and 3 conversions to make the full time score 29-0.
After some early pressure on the home side, Quins were rewarded a penalty opportunity after just 5 mins in front the posts. However, a nervy James Shiells sliced the kick and that was as close Quins would get to scoring for the rest of the game.
Michael Lawton made sure of his penalty opportunity at the 20 min mark to edge the home side in front. Just two minutes later, Gannon gained possession from the restart and good work down the wing along with quick ball allowed Stuart McCloskey to get over for his first try. Lawton converted to leave the score 10-0.
In the dying minutes of the first half the robust Rowan Halsall touched done for Gannon after a gallop down the far wing. Lawton missed the extras which left the score 15-0 at half time.
From the restart Quins tried to get into this game, but were unable to penetrate a tight Gannon defence and a few injuries to the front row weakened the Quins scrum to some degree. After 12 mins of the second half McCloskey got over for his second try and then 8 mins later Dave Egner secured the bonus point for Gannon. Lawton added the extras for both tries.
From that point both sides made good use of their benches. The game ebbed and flowed, but there were to be no more scores.
Quins guys looked a little rusty and perhaps the festive period had taken its toll, but to be fair to them they never give up and defended vigorously to the final whistle. This type of day happens in club rugby and its better to have the cob webs blown off in this Ulster League game before the big AIL 1B match v Ballymena on Friday night (KO 7.30pm, Deramore). See you there!
